I WANT IT I WANT IT!

I almost messed myself when I saw this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/EARLY-COLOR-TV-M...kparms=65%3A10

OH THE THINGS I WOULD DO FOR THAT..............
Unfortunately its going for stoopid money which I'm not made of. Hope it finds a good home!

Me? I'd use it. Restore the electronics and use it. But I'm mad you see. It truly belongs in a museum.

Go ahead, scratch your heads and say "Heh?"

I wonder if it can even take a PlayStation.

It can. The basic analog NTSC signal standard remained unchanged for over a half a century. What this means is that you can take an old TV (even a 1940s black-and-white set) and hook up a modern DVD player, satellite dish, or game console with the proper adapter.

It'd be neat to play games on, except for the hinderance of the round picture tube... it tends to cut off vital details that lay in the corners of the picture. I already have a vintage color roundie in my living room and it cuts off phone numbers on commercials, etc. Too bad.

Why do you have such an affinity for things from the 50's? I'm not trying to be spiteful (there are plenty of things I like which no one really understands why I like them), I'm just wondering if there's a specific reason why you like the style.

+ because they look aweome
+ because things in those days were built to be reliable (ie not just work until the next model is out)

Well, I sat for a long time wondering what I should write, or if I even should write. I think that on this forum the answer to that question would fall on deaf ears, just as many of the serious things I (used to) try writing about.

There is a story and there is one person here I've actually enjoyed having a discussion about the subject with; it does involve quite a bit of interesting personal stuff.

But... the "real" reason behind it put aside for now, yes, it's the style. The styling of that era is absolutely timeless, even canonical... the 50s was a pivotal point in our "advanced" western civilization; the beginning of a vast changing social venue which came to a pretty craggy, jagged point in the mid 60s.... look at the styles, the art, the people, the ideas, the music.... a lot of things were changing and a lot of these things were completely new and the result of a fresh, independent, even abstract method of thinking seen little if at all before.... if not in some regards incredibly naive thinking....

Notice how so many times over the decades since then we've gone back again, and again, to these styles. Canonical.

About the 60s Music, I like it. Although, that TV does look extremely weird. Yeah, the Analogic Standard has been out for a while, so it can take a PS. =P Still, I dunno if you could play something like Sonic Heroes in there, or even Final Fantasy. I'd freak out. XD

But I don't think it would be a good option for you, Pilot. Just if you like to watch old western movies. =D

Well, it IS color, and unique color at that. What a lot of people don't know about these early round color sets is that the color gamut of these sets ended when square color tubes came out and reappeared only with the latest LCD and plasma TVs. What I'm saying is that the colors were so vibrant on these sets it can make a scene look 'unreal'- I always say it makes anything you're watching look like a technicolor movie.

Here are some examples I shot of my '59 RCA. The latter two are not cropped the way I like them but I can't be bothered to fix them. Look very carefully at the softness of the colors and subtlety of all the edges, combined into the entire picture as a whole. Something you don't get anymore with digital.

Nb. Nb at all. I think I actually like that a little more than today's high-def. However, I'm still content with my huge, very 3-dimensional television from the nineties. Also, <3 Farscape.

If I had the money/and eBay account, there would be some real competition for those folk bidding for that.

I love this.

This set on the left is nearly identical to my home TV, except mine is in a black lacquered cabinet.
