i must be really 'out of the zone' but what is Solstice?

A solstice happens only twice a year. It isn't a band - it is an event in which the Sun "reaches" it's most northern/southern (depending on where you live) point.

There are two solstices in a year. The summer solstice, in which we experience the most daylight in one day and marks the point where days stop getting longer and start getting shorter. The winter solstice has the fewest hours of daylight, in which the days stop getting longer and start getting shorter. This is as opposed to the equinoxes, in spring and autumn, in with the hours of night and daylight are as equal as they get.

These four events are and were celebrated by many cultures across the world past and present, most notably the anglo pagans. Christianity assimilated all but the summer solstice into its own celebrations, which is why summer is the longest period without any religious holidays and why it is unusual to celebrate it. Also Glastonbury is a gravitational centre for neo and pseudo pagans.
