Seeing Python where none exists

Posted 04-01-2009 at 05:19 AM by Nate
I wish I had a video to illustrate this point, but it doesn't exist. Let me paint you a picture with words.

I was watching a cooking show on tv and they were talking about how post-war immigration brought new cultures and flavours to Australia. Also how pre-war, going out to a restaurant was a rare occassion but it's become more common now. The narration was illustrated with various bits of file footages showing people dressed in their finest, going out to eat. One very quick shot was black and white of a restaurant, probably in the '60s.

What was really there: a not particularly pretty woman, dressed to the hilt and with perfectly coiffed hair.
What I saw: John Cleese in a wig.

What is it about 60's posh fashion that it makes me immediately think of Monty Python?

You know, I realized yesterday that I fell in love with Monty Python for its absurdity but now enjoy it much more for its satire, to the point where the absurdity sometimes seems to let it down for me.

Am I doing it wrong?

If you'd not said anything, I would have thought that was indeed a Monty Python sketch.

I think that is indeed a Monty Python sketch. The person next to Cleese looks like a man as well.

Uh...

Yes, of course, that is from a Python sketch. I have no footage of the woman I was talking about. I used that photo to express the fashion and stylings (and approximate attractiveness level) of what I saw.
