Big Face

A while ago in response to a question about Big Face, Alf had this to say: "Maybe it's Abe from the future, come back to set the whole Quintology in motion! Dun dun duuuun!"

I didn't think much about it until I was flipping through the OW art book and noticed something about BF's concept sketches I hadn't before. In one sketch with his mouth exposed, stitches like Abe's can be seen.

Now I can't imagine why the "Abe from the future" thing was mentioned unless there is truth to it... Is this common knowledge and am I just late, or did no one else notice this?

There's a whole school of thought devoted to that single notion.

No but to be fair I've considered it myself, we'll have to wait and see huh? =)

I don't think you should take anything seriously if it's suffixed by "Dun dun duuun!".

Of course - I was just reminded of it because I saw the stitches on his lips months later.

Can you give a page number?

Also, given that the stitched-lips Mudokon face logo is seen a fair bit around Rupturefarms, it's probably safe to say that Abe isn't the only mud who had his lips stitched. That said, it is interesting to consider that Big Face was a former slave, rather than a native-born shaman.

It's on page 94 just above his 3D model. There are other sketches that may show his mouth without them, but it's difficult to tell if it's actually his mouth or part of the mask.

You're right about the logo, I'd forgotten about that. I was just thinking of a certain interview (I think G4?) where Lorne explains that Abe had his lips sewn together as a child because he was a crybaby.

I like to imagine that, if Big Face really is Abe from the future, a large mask was decided upon to conceal his lips until the end of the Quintology.

It's an interesting idea, and sounds like the kind of thing Lorne and crew would pull. It's funny to think Abe would eventually mature to have a comically deep voice.

On a related note, does anyone know Abe's age? Or even the life rate of a Mudokon? For all we know, Abe could be only 6 or 7 in Human years.

Abe is 15 years old. The average Mudokon lifespan is about 40 years.

If BigFace is Abe from the future, how can we explain what happens in AO's bad ending?

I mean doesn't that lead to some break in the timeline?

"Sam is responsible for sewing baby Abe’s lips together to prevent him from crying and disturbing livestock. She did this knowing that unless she shut him up first, he would be hurt until he shut one one way or another." If Big Face was slave born it's possible.

Wasn't the bad ending to Abe's Oddysee non-canon? Abe's Exoddus assumes you'd saved all 99 mudokons.

Ah, I see. It's a rejected production design, so I wouldn't take it as canon. It's possible that Lorne hadn't fully worked out either Bigface or Abe's backstories. Or possibly the designer was so used to drawing Abe with stitchlips that he unthinkingly did the same to Bigface.

It’s like in Primer – if you travel to the past you create a new timeline separate from the original.

Wow, that is convenient.

Oh and even if the bad ending is not canon, I believe it still follows the logic of the whole story.

Yeh but the bad ending isn't canon so...it doesn't exist in the true course of things right? I figure if Big Face was Abe then why did he suddenly get a surfer dude accent?

I mean that point where he's all like 'woaaaah'.

BigFace never had a surfer dude accent. His voice was just uncharacteristically deep and human for a Mudokon, which I found pretty hilarious when I first heard it.

Examining the bad ending of AO, BigFace handled the matter of Abe's death democratically. He asked the other Mudokons what they thought his ultimate fate should be. Granted, he did try half-heartedly to convince them he was worth saving by remarking "he's one of us". If he was Abe, the second they said "Let 'em", he would have vanished into thin air! =o

Abe didn't die. He just turned into birds and respawned somewhere else.

Or maybe Abe becomes omnipotent at the end of the Quintology. The possibilities are endless.

Well if someone killed you in the past you wouldnt vanish becouse you made a new timeline also bigface did look a bit panicky when they discussed about whether or not to let abe fall in the cutting machine.

At the end of the Quintology, Abe finds out that a plane piloted by the last surviving members of his family crashes into his uninsured home, and that his puppy has inoperable cancer.

And then he becomes an alcoholic.

I like to think the end of the Quintology is the Magog Cartel is overthrown by Mudokons and other races. We all do right?

Also didn't the workers at Rupture Farms also have stitchlips? or is Abe the only one?
