Abe's exodus high resolution screenshots

Hi, i'm sorry if such thread already exists, i didn't find it. I'm just interesting about these screenshots that i've found in the internet. I've noticed the same screenshots when looked through old "oddworld inhabitants" website, long time ago .Can you explain what is that and where are they come from or give me links to the similar thread? :

Thanks, but who made this fake? It looks very nice. And why these fake screenshots were posted on the official oddworlds site mixed up with original screenshots from the PC version?

There isn't more information about it. Those are just Hi Res shots done for promotion and to look nice in magazines.

The question that come to my mind is why wasn't the game rebuilt with the original high resolution data? Seeing as how there is no need to worry about squeezing the game onto CDs, this should have been done. Unless the original high rez stuff doesn't exist anymore?

Any thoughts?

In their rawest form they are hi-res, but due to compression they look far more pixelated.
The root files are long lost, otherwise they probably would have been able to restore it.

No, they probably wouldn't have. It would require more than just re-rendering the same characters, it would require an entirely new game engine.

Wouldn't and couldn't, since the files are probably long lost.
Did GT change hands or just completely go under?

They probably DO have the high res graphics, but making the game support them is too much work. The PC port is the PS game wrapped with a PlayStation emulation library and some tweaks such as 0-9 game speak and named saves. Since the PS does not support these high resolutions, they'd have to re-port the game to native PC graphic and sound libraries like OpenGL or DirectX. The English term for this is "Too much work". :P

If I had the time and money I'd buy Unity 3d, learn C# and remake the first two Oddworld Games in 2.5d (Like the new Donkey Kong or Super Smash Bros). Wait a minute Nowtun and his team could do it, along with the 3d version.

I think that's what Fartuess is hoping to get done. At least, that's what he planned (afaik).

I know it would take a decent amount of time but has there been talk of ever just doing a full blown remake of those games. Would be GREAT.
Yes that would be cool, wouldn't it :

Except it really wouldn't. Why spend all that time and money to remake from scratch old games. If they're going to need to make a new engine, create new models, build new environments... just make a goddamn new game.

This data is probably stored somewhere, but actually rebuilding the game with it is probably not feasible.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. Abe's Oddysee is a very good game, but I've played it tons already.

It would be great to see the new oddworld game.I didn't expect that developers need to make a new engine to release such hi-res version of first two Abes.Anyway these promotional hi-res shots looks cool and first two games with same graphics would become a nice present for fans. After release of whole quintology. If it will ever happen

Well everybody's getting excited over the SW HD update, so why not an AO/AE HD update? I've seen plenty of people complaining about how dated those games' resolutions are at this point.
And I think you may be overreacting about building a whole new engine for such an update - sure, they'd need to implement a new graphics engine, but overall it wouldn't be that much work.

I'd buy it.

Fred and (at least in how I interpretted his quote) Stewart Gilray weren't talking about an HD update. They were talking about a full, 2.5D remake.

I would support some sort of re-rendering update but starting from scratch to recreate an identical game seems pointless to me.

Ah, fair enough. I guess that's just a difference in opinion because a 2.5D remake still sounds awesome to me.

Actually, judging by the .path format, remaking the engine is relatively an easy task. It's actually something me or Paul have enough knowledge to do. The problem is that it's still isn't a matter of "Press a button" and you have an HD version ready, and OI/JAW/Whoever have their order of priorities.

That's saddening. Oh well, Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus are still quite beautiful and forever enchanting.

I see your point, Nate (and others). Perhaps down the pipe after, more importantly, Oddworld has built up a larger consumer base.

I'd love to see Munch's Oddysee remade (as originally intended) or using some 2.5D format.

Edit:
Better yet. I'd like to see a Munch bonus game (a la Abe's Exoddus) done as Munch's Oddysee was originally intended.
