Oddworld Questions & Answers VII

Welcome to the seventh edition of Oddworld Questions & Answers, one of the Oddworld Forums’ oldest traditions.

What do I post here?

This unofficial Q&A is intended to reduce the amount small threads in Oddworld Discussion that never last long, and exist only to answer a simple question. Some good questions that have been asked in the past include: Who is the leader of the Mudokons? What does ‘Zulag’ mean? What are the MameGame Generators? Members should feel free to contribute possible answers.

This is also a media request thread. Ask for pictures, sound files, videos, and links here.

I have a question!

Radical! But before you ask it, please check to make sure your question isn’t already answered by Oddworld Inhabitants’ official F.A.Q., the Oddworld Library’s unofficial F.A.Q., or in a previous edition of Oddworld Q&A (which come with complete contents listing all the questions asked). Also, try searching for your answer on the Oddworld Forums by using its own search engine, or using Google by adding ‘site:www.oddworldforums.net’ to your search term. Trust me, everything we know about Chroniclers, Khanzumerz, Squeek, and SligStorm has been talked about on here a dozen times.

Some questions don’t belong in this thread.
  • Questions about how you can obtain Oddworld games or merchandise should go in the Buy List thread.
  • Questions about gameplay or technical problems should go in the Oddworld Help forum.
  • Questions about the Oddworld Forums should go in the Forum Suggestions & Help forum.

I’d like to request a picture/video/link

Super stuff. Just be aware that The Oddworld Archives already hosts a huge collection of images, audio, video, archived websites, and links to interviews, designer diaries, and more! Please look there before asking here.

Yet another version kicks off.

I know this is unlikely, but does anyone have a bigger version of this picture http://oddworldlibrary.net/archives/...W/RASW0006.jpg

I ask because I'm trying to add it to the other one similar to this but from the other games, the problem is they are half the size of Abe and everyone.

Ah, damnit. When I had a copy of the Oddworld licensing guide I’d have been able to give you a better version. But my hard drive crashed and Xav’s laptop got stolen, so I’m afraid we can’t help you with that one.

I asked in the old thread what is a Brewery to Be. Now I know what it is. A newspaper of MO tells that plans for SoulStorm Micro Brwery have been halted. So, has SoulStorm Micro Brewery been built?

The construction in ‘Brewery to Be’ is the SoulStorm Micro Brewery. ‘Brewery to Be’ is just the name of the game level. Obviously that micro brewery was never built, but there are most likely additional SoulStorm Brew breweries given the amount of the stuff that’s still available.

I don’t think they have penises that can shrink. Sligs are like butterflies, anyway, short‐lived and expendable.

I think mentally, your ordinary run-of-the-mill Slig is already mentally scarred and pretty much ruined in that aspect to the point it's not going to get any worse. I'd suspect Big Bros have reduced lifespans due to increased biological activity. I'm certain the worst effects would be mental, and that isn't so much an issue for Sligs which do as ordered anyway. The effect on other Oddworldian species could be vastly different.

@ Zerox: I think the Oddworld site says that a big bro's lifespan is 20 years, which seems the same to me. Plus I think their eyes are visible through the visors in some pictures.

Steroids are growth hormones. And what does eyes through the visors have to do with anything?

Do ordinary Sligs only live 20 years? That doesn't sound much, considering Mudokons on average live twice that.

Where does it say that Abes name is Abraham Lure. In the Art book it says that it was a name considered for Abe, alongside Monkfish and Aben etc. But it doesn't actually say (In the art book anyway) that Abraham Lure is Abes full name.

At the very least, that was originally planned to be Abe's full name, and whether it is canonically or not, that is the accepted full name by the Oddworld community.

I think it is safe to say that Abe was never named Abramham Lure, as I doubt the people who name them make up complicated ones. Espcially a last name, which kind of doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the Industerial world for Mudokons.

Note: Notice how all of the slave Mudokons we know of have three letter names. (aka Abe, Alf, and Bud)

If they were to be named such, I guess they would never know, since they would be frequently called the simplified names by Sligs and other Mudokons (since their language doesn't get very sophiscated and they probably don't want to waste time saying such long names) so often they would forget it.

I thought Sligs called them things like Scum or their Slave number rather than their name. Maybe they chose their names themselves?

Bill is four letters. Stumpy is six letters. Unless you shorten it to Stu, I guess.

:
Abe DOES have a last name
:
Q: How did Abe® come across his name? I'll guess that the Glukkons wouldn't waste their "valuable" time naming their slaves, so who did? Did the Mudokon Queen Sam name him at birth, and if so how did he remember it?

Alf: Mudokons name each other. It's a lot less confusing that saying, "Hey, you!" all the time.

I think Abraham is who drawed that pic.
Anyway I think the name Abe symbolizes something for Mudokons: maybe it stand for saviour or for liberator... maybe in the ancient Mudokon language.

You think Abraham is the person who drew the Abe concept design? No, check the art book. It’s drawn by Steven Olds. From memory, I can’t recall any OWI member going by the name of Abe or Abraham.

It isn't safe to say that because we know for a fact that that was his name. If you had the art book you'd know that too.

The fact is that Abe was originally envisaged as a free mudokon fisherman (thus the 'Lure' surname). The name was dropped when OWI decided that it would feel more significant if he started the story ignorant of his spiritual heritage.
