Do you want children?

I think Ambi was the last person to make this thread.

The question is do you want children one day. (My apologies to older suckers like OANST who already have their offspring.) Remembering the old thread, there were some people who were totally grossed out at the thought of having them...And there were some who were more than happy to raise them one day.

Don't forget about adoption. Discuss.

Edit:
I would have added a poll if it hadn't timed out on me.

Yes, and no, I don't know what kind of furture I child (concieved, not adopted) of mine would be brought into, including Global Warming and such things.

On a lighter note, I don't know if I want a girl or a boy, as 'Meanrock Destructotron' and "Staff Sargeant Max Fightmaster" are only good with the Y bearers.

I doubt I will even get into a relationship with a woman, let alone have a child with one. Its alright though, I don't want any children.

I'd love to have children someday. Yes, this may sound tame, but my dream future does involve a good old-fashioned, cosy family. I'm just soppy that way

Preferrably more than two children, I have two boys' names picked out and two girls' names. The boys' are Rob(in) and Charles (Charlie) or even...LORNE, and the girls' are Marilyn and Lucinde. And I by no means plan on being a single mom, because that's damaging to everyone involved.

No Luke?! I'm offended.

As of now I don't think about having a child, so I can't answer this question just yet.

Sex is over-rated.

Children? Me? No. The concept sounds nice, but in practice I don't think I'd be able to maintain my sanity.

Amen (in a secular sense) Alcar.

MoxCo, if you ever have children, when they are 14, send them to a Grammar School.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I see my friends with their kids and they are so cute. But then I see my friends with their kids and they are so annoying. But like most things, you have to take the good with the bad.

Yeah, Hobo is an excellent candidate to spearhead the Name Them Charles campaign.

One day I will have kids (unless something horrible happens to the atmosphere, terra firma or the finality of physical death). Whether I'll adopt them or go au naturale I haven't decided. I don't really have any names planned, other than the specification that they should not be common nor ordinary, but also unlikely to get them beaten up at school. I for one will not be naming my son "Tallulah Fudge" blindly unaware of the inevitable divorce from his parents and/or suicide that will undoubtedly follow.

Or I could just get a parrot. Just as noisy and long-lived, but not nearly as expensive in the long run.

Adoption sounds like fun.
1; So, why should I have something I hate? That's bad for me, the child, and everyone else.

2;I will not be working with children, except in the historical context of the children's crusade and the Incarnation.

3;See 1.

Another reason I don't want kids is due to human overpopulation. Humans are genetically faulty and illogical, and until good prenatal genetic engineering is developed to eliminate genetic incorrectness such as autism or stupidity, I'd rather not breed.

I'm not a racist or a fascist, if that's what your implying. I believe all races (though not all cultures) to be born equal. However, due to the link between race and poverty, people of some races do not receive as good an education or nutrition or other life services, which can lead to malnourished physiology and neurology. However, all this means is that more education is required worldwide (including, quite frankly, better education for white and asian people!), not that these people should be patronized by well meaning, overbearing humanitarians.

Eugenics doesn't have to involve coercion, abortion, concentration camps or pills. It's a misused scientific theory that simply means "Breeding for better humans", which could include breeding out , Down's Syndrome, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, cancer, and addictions. It's wrong to reject it out of hand because some people misuse it.

On Topic: If anyone had children, would they prefer male or female children?

I was actually referring to the "rather not breed" part, and alluding to voluntary human extinction. I happen to agree that gene therapy should be implemented where possible to elimination those hereditary diseases deemed severe enough to do so. But that is a slippery slope- how do we define what is a bad gene? If you don't begin with a watertight policy, we will find that we are breeding ourselves in ways we shouldn't.

As for gender, I have no preference- even if the option to choose became available, I'd decline. However, I'd be more comfortable with a boy, given that that is the only gender I know how to deal with- in any circumstance.

Ah, my mistake. A bad gene, I would say, is one that inconveniences or discomforts the person with it. I realise you could say that they might be inconvenienced by bullying for being different, but the gene for bullying and xenophobia could also be partially removed while still keeping the good properties of it. Similarily, the good properties of the genes related to the bad gene of autism could be maintained without keeping the bad gene, with good enough technology.

It's a start, but in severe need of development, as I'm sure you recognise yourself. It's still up for interpretation.

I happen to know autistic people (Asperger's, specifically) who like their condition and consider the trade-offs to be worth the benefits they perceive. What right do we have to call that a product of bad genes? I know many genes that have both good and bad traits. Sickle-cell anaemia in malarial countries, for example.
