Late here...is New 'n' Tasty worth it?

I never got round to playing New 'n' Tasty when it first came out as in my eyes Abe's Oddysee was so perfect I couldn't imagine how it could be bettered.

Now I've had time to let it settle and whatnot, I wonder whether it's something I should at least give a go.

I was just wondering what the general consensus on New 'n' Tasty was around these parts? Worth getting? Better or worse than the original?

You have opened the stenchiest can of shit you could possibly open.

In my opinion no, it's not AO version 2.0. The game is alright, but it is, by no means, better than AO. It loses almost all the atmosphere and tension and the gameplay isn't really that of a cinematic platformer anymore.

There's no general consensus. Some people hate it, some people love it, most people think it's OK.

I'm one of the people who love it, and most people agree that it's at least not bad so you probably don't have anything to lose by buying it and, who knows, you might love it.

For me its OK, my only problem is that I don't like the controls that much after being used to the original so much. I like grid based movement better and I also like that falling kills you, no falling damaged changed the game play dynamics a lot for me.

It's not bad as a standalone game, but it's not good as AO remake.

It’s worth getting. It’s a different beast from the original and doesn’t match the tone and atmosphere but personally I think the gameplay is much less frustrating.

That's also what varies from player to player. I died much more often in NnT, due to mines exploding whenever they wish, and a lack of grid/step system which caused jumping to be less perfect

That’s fair. Personally I didn’t have much trouble adjusting to the grid being gone, and mines behaved themselves; but I did dislike the default jumping enough to change over to the classic control scheme, and the UXB and meatsaw timing gave me problems in some spots.

The meat saws, along with the momentum system for rolling is what killed secret areas in this game for me.

The default jumping system was really bad though, but I did manage to get through the game with it enabled. I didn't like how much they took to implement the classic scheme though.

The meatsaws were fixed in an update, I think.

Also, I think it need clarification: there are two control systems in NnT, default and classic mode. They're not reffering to AO while saying "default jumping".

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between the default and classic control systems in New 'n' Tasty? The reported lack of 'grid' system is what initially put me off (that was a big part of what made Oddysee what it was imo), but if there's some way you can kind of get that back I might be interested...

The buggy ones (that were moving faster than they should because of framerate weirdness) were, but as FA said there’s still problems with Abe having too much inertia when starting a roll, making fast-moving meatsaws a major pain.

I think if you gave it a shot you’ll miss the grid system less than you think you will. It’s just a shame there’s no demo.

I admit I got past most of them by a countless cycle of dying and quickloading, while I have no problems rolling under them in AO on the first try.

Also, in NnT you roll much slower than running.

I, on the other hand, think you'll miss it just the same. It makes some situations, e.g. when you need to press a lever quickly unnecessarily hard, because Abe does a few little steps to reach it.

I still consider it a design decision based only on them not being able to create a good grid system in Unity. Just like they couldn't make shadow areas (which is by all means possible in 3D games, and probably in Unity) so they used smoke particles instead.

Bixer, here are the two good ideas of Nnt : 1. You can chant while you're on Elum. 2. You can say "hello, follow me" to more than one mudokon (just like Exoddus).

I enjoyed it a lot. It's a very good re-imagining of Abe's Oddysee. It looks gorgeous and for the most part, plays pretty well too. Most of the changes were welcome such as the Exoddus-styled "All of Ya" and more Mudokons to save, whilst others not so much. Such as the addition of Ragdolls and other minor details like smoke instead of shadows, Mudokons talking to themselves and in-game ads to other indie games on the PS4 version.

The two biggest problems I have with the game are the controls and the art style choice.

Whilst it's not as bad as it was on launch, the controls has it's problems. sometimes walking and running doesn't always work as they should and hopping can sometimes make you walk instead, which is deadly next to a UXB. It's stuff you can get used to but these problems are there (I assume) because it's not a grid system anymore. So it's not as tight when it comes to Abe moving around.

And even though I said the game looks gorgeous, The game is very bright. Too bright. Too many effects like lens flare over-saturating the screen and comparing that to the dark, gritty feel of the original. It doesn't really fit the theme of the game.

Apart from that, I recommend it. If your still unsure, wait for a sale.

I have a rather fond attachment to it. Due to following it's development from the very start and always going back and reliving my initial reaction to it. (FYI, I was teary eyed. I'm not even joking.)

I actually think, generally, people really like NnT if internet voting sites and comment sections are to be believed. The fans of Matthewmatosis dislike the game and there are a significant, but probably small, section of the fanbase that have their criticisms.

I think it's a pretty fun game with a certain lack of polish. It's pretty much the same game but it's missing some of those key ingredients that really sit with you whilst you play AO. Certain visuals, certain sounds, a certain feeling I guess.

Yeah, I've realized that most of the responses about it are generally positive, from what I've seen at least. If you're a little skeptical about buying it and you don't think its price is cheap enough to take that risk, then I think it would be best to follow CP's advice and wait for it to go on sale.

It has its flaws for sure, and some of the creative decisions are questionable, but it's still a lot of fun and still very cool.

Pros:
QuickSave
'All o' Ya!'
Smooth Sidescrolling
Great Soundtrack
HD Visuals: Stunning Scenery & In-Game Characters
New Alternative ways to solve puzzles
New Cutscenes

Cons:
- Irritating Mudokons talking (or going 'eh! eh! eh! Come on...' every 5 damn seconds, whoever voiced that one should be shot)
- Atmosphere killed. Too Bright and shiny.
- Original SFX... Scrabs now squeak.. I miss the old sounds. Paramites are Acceptable.
- Ragdoll Physics (Whilst sometimes funny, kills atmosphere. I miss the fizzing)
- Abe's Voice. (Not in a negative way, it still sounds Abe-y, but not as charming and mystical as the soft original)
- The cheesy Loading rhymes e.g. 'out of nowhere an Elum Appeared, Abe's journey to the temple was becoming weird'.. I don't know, i don't think i like them.
- The Chanting: again, not as mystical as the original, and continues to make sound after possession.
- Mudokon Chanting!! - The one in Scrabania that goes 'Yowww Yah Yowww' pisses me off big time
- Abe making noises: 'Yughhh!' every jump..
- The meat saws! - 1/50 chance of passing through without dying
- Controls are clunky: Abe shuffles before jumping unless assigned Jump with X, Rolling is slow, sometimes doesn't respond.
- Rupturefarms opening scene.. Looks too futuristic and snazzy. I prefer the old polluting grey one.

There are way more Cons than Pros about New 'n' Tasty, but that's because you will never beat an original. We are all accustomed to how Abe used to sound, move and look, and seeing it reimagined is weird. But I can play NNT countless times and still have fun. I will just never get the same feelings as i did with the original. All the heart palpitations when being chased by Scrabs or waking up a Slig.. It doesn't exist anymore.

But i'd say it's worth a buy. I have PS4 version, PC and will be getting Wii U version too. because i will always support Oddworld

Ah, Mudokon idle talk. I'm happy that I forgot most of their lines. The sligs now shout "Mommy!" while being posessed.

Also, you can't beat a mudokon to death with a slig. They never die. I consider this one of the pros, as they're so annoying I wished I could torture them forever. And I could!

Ha, as someone who rarely posts in this forum, I'm quite flattered that known about me! You're correct though, I was very disappointed with Abe's Exoddus - it just seemed a case of 'Hey, let's make it bigger, that way it'll automatically be better, right? Right?'

From the sounds of things though, I think New 'n' Tasty would end up just being the same. Those in particular speaking negatively of the atmosphere is the deal-breaker for me I think, that is one of the biggest reasons as to why I love Oddysee - gameplay-wise it hardly reinvented the wheel, but everything about it was absorbing.

I guess considering how nigh on perfect I regard Oddysee, New 'n' Tasty would have to make very few mistakes for me not to be disappointed by it.

Perhaps in a few years time when I see it in a sale for dirt cheap I might give it a whirl, but for now I think I'll just stick to my annual replay of Oddysee.
