though I joke about sexism on occasion, it's always nice if it's friendly banter.
Like our de-humanizing MSN chats about womenfolk?

I think men and women should be treated equally, not necessarily exactly the same in all respects but still equally generally I'm a little nicer to women (holding doors open and carrying things and such) I think some degree of banter is acceptable just as long as it is clear that it is not serious and is not too extensive.

I think there are some behavioral differences such as most women pay special attention to how they look and men are more interested in sports, although there are always exceptions to such behavioral differences

off topic: I think I know why women got the nickname birds, birds see something shiny and they want it, same story when women see shiny jewelry

I am shocked at the number of guys in this thread who claim to hold doors open for women.

I see sexism as something childish and pointless, the difference between male and female will always be there, however i do accept non-extreme sexism likes women rights and stuff like that, unlike feminism and masculinity which are just stupid and childish because we bleed red.

The whole point of feminism is woman's rights. Can you specify as to which rights you support? And to those that you do not.

I strongly dispute this. I, a man, am not the least bit interested in sport and I know women who are massively into sport. I also know a couple of women who are the least vain people you'd ever imagine. I think you're only considering people within the Western world (and places affected by the West) who are just following social conventions of a particular culture. Although we're talking about treatment of women in these areas, I still think it's important to consider that our view of sexism is strongly affected by our culture and to get a better understanding of the matter as a whole, we need to examine the treatment of women in other cultures.

I'm against any kind of discrimination, except against proven morons and religious extremists (which is basically the same thing). However when it comes to things like the workplace, women demand the be paid and rated the same as men, but when you give them a somewhat heavy task some of them will start complaining that they're being singled out, which is bullshit. If you want to be treated as one of the guys then don't complain when you are actually being treated as one of the guys.

As for women using their body to get stuff, I can't say I blame them. Chicks going out and dressing up just a little bit slutty to get free drinks from guys all night (and should one of them be sexy, take him home) is fine in my book. If someone is open and secure about their body and sexuality then it would be stupid of them not to exploit that to get what they want. I would if I could, but unfortunately I am not a sexy girl nor a sexy gay guy. I have nothing to exploit a guy's sex drive with. And make no mistake, a guy's sex drive will make him spend money faster than the climbing rate of the American National Debt.

I was bought a drink once by a female because I lifted something heavy for her. Sometimes minor sexism pays off.

I'm too lazy to read through all of this thread right now, but Judith Butler is probably the most prolific gender political activist of current times. Other good recent reads have been Elizabeth Grosz! and Jacob Hale, with their core values being ultimately genderqueer but with refreshing acknowledgment of gender studies as having been a gynocentric discipline.

I strongly dispute this. I, a man, am not the least bit interested in sport and I know women who are massively into sport. I also know a couple of women who are the least vain people you'd ever imagine. as I said there are always exceptions to the diffferences that I stated (I'm not a fan of sport either) and it is quite possible that I am wrong as I am only considering people I know, Unlike bullet magnet I am too bloody lazy to do a tone of reasearch to make my post's correct, so I just post what I think and if it is not correct than I welcome people who correct me.

But I think you're only looking at a particular demographic. I think you might be surprised at how many people are not interested in sport and how many people are not vain. Stereotypes are created through the portrayal of people in the media, which in most cases is on the Government's side, and they are interested in keeping the general population dumb because it makes things easier (especially in marketing) Before anyone else does, I'll make reference to the tin-foil hat. What I'm saying is that there are probably just as many people who dislike sport (or vanity) who do like that stuff.

Having seen both sides of the coin yesterday I can honestly say I don't give a toss either way and would prefer people to treat me like they treat anyone else. I don't want you to hold doors open for me because I'm a woman, I want you to hold doors open for me because it's a nice thing to do, and I'd do the same for you.

On one side of it, let me bring up the gamer equality crap that happens nowadays: I had a bunch of screaming kids at my back during a Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament yesterday, declaring that if I beat their friend, he would've been "beaten by a girl on Xbox", as though that was something to be ashamed of.
I personally would say if he got his ass whooped by me, he should be ashamed of being beaten by someone at a low skill level. =p Being a woman has nothing to do with it.

Later on, I was hanging out with two of my male friends, and we ordered pizza. One of them came out with me to get the pizza, and felt bad because I offered to carry our entire order back to his place (he lives in halls of residence at university, and they can't deliver right to his door). I responded shrugging it off and telling him chivalry was dead. :P
Admittedly he probably has more upper body strength and also has a height advantage. I didn't care because he was busy paying the delivery guy and had to unlock doors.

Of course, my opinion is probably skewed in some way. I recently found out that it's apparently weird to think an engagement ring shouldn't cost $1000+.
