I replayed Munch's Oddysee and I liked it

Time for some much needed positivity in this place.

(no but seriously, unmet expectations aside MO is beautiful for a 6th gen launch title)

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that MO was a flawless masterpiece even for its time, or anywhere near it, but it was a good game, and a great first attempt at Oddworld in 3D.

Also MGS2 was not technically a launch title :P

Well, I guess so.

I don't really hate MO, and the first time I played it, and I had some fun with it.

MO was fine. The reason people were shitty with it at the time was that OWI had promised more than they could deliver, and they didn't succeed in resetting expectations before launch.

I played MO a lot. The gameplay wasn't as polished as the Abe games or Stranger by any stretch, but I enjoyed most of it. I also think they struck quite a good tone in terms of the balance between the fairly dark themes and the cartoon slapstick violence/comedy - for all it was quite lighthearted, it was also quite sinister at points, if not quite as much so as AO.

Personally I felt that, more than dark and comedic, MO was ambient in a way that fit the Oddworld universe, not perfectly, but close to it nonetheless. As a kid, it left me truly aching to see beyond the confines of the world shown in the game, and even now I can't help but feel the same way replaying it.

How is the PC version of Munch these days? Is it still a pile of bugs or did they work it out?

As long you don't play the remastered one. But even the original one is buggy ofc.
It's still not really the best port, but you can still complete it.

There isn't a fully remastered one, the new port is shoddily ported from the mobile version, while the other one was made by a third party for PC. The old port didn't work for a huge number of people and it was crashy and with missing features. The new one doesn't crash that often and launches for the majority (I think) but it still has missing features. And the UI has some of the worst looking Photoshops you can see in a commercial product.

Are the ports for other systems any better?

I don't think any is better than the original Xbox version. Still, the PS3 remaster is probably more feature complete and less buggy than any of the PC ports. And it certainly doesn't have this screen of infinite Photoshop quality:

I replayed MO too and the game gets bad as soon as you reach Splinterz. That is when the bullshit coalesces into the truly insufferable.

It’s also more engaging and memorable than the entire MGS franchise
