a thought

i have been playing ninja gaiden, and that game (though needlessly hard to just pick up and go) a has fantastic controll system. so i was thinking for oddworld we should learn from this system. most specifically i speak of the wall run feature. wall to character interaction depends on which buttons you use and how fast you are moving in what direction. these controlls (I also like shinobi for ps2) are incredible. it opens a complete freedom to the level, that you would miss if you were just going through to beat it. im not saying we should rip off all the ninja games that are out (though i will say i love them). but there is something really badass about a character that can go anywhere, flip and dodge, wallrun and instantly kill with a rapid sucession of slient blows from his sword, then stealthily sneak away. (*do note the straight sword in shinobi looks better than the ninja gaiden, also the costume does)

i say oddworld should nurture this idea, and take it to a whole new level. supppose oddworld had some amphbian (or reptile, or whatever) who could stick to walls. now we have a whole new arena for secret places, vents and, stealth. imgaine stiking to the underside or side of a platform. (gravity of course has an effect on sideways and upside down jumps) the camera should stay oreinted as normal, but the character would be changing planes.

too much effort you say? ok then make it a hidden character of little importance other than i can unlock him somehow, and replay the game with his different set of skills. unlocking hidden extras is GREAT for replay value, which is a big criticism of OWI games.

the reason ninjas are so cool in this sense is that they are assasins. what if the character we got to play with was working against the games central character (like Munch or Abe) . so all of a sudden we are the bad guys. just foor good writings sake there have to be sad moments in oddworld, how muhc sadder would they be if we HAD to be the one that did it.

ok that is my thouhgt. we need a stealth wallwalking (and ceilingwalking) character who is badass (possibly bad-guy or gal) who is not afraid to get his hands dirty.

I didn't really like NG, although the control system was rather thooper.

It has to be said that the best game for stealth kills is 'Wolverines Revenge'. Mainly because you knew when you could perform such whipper-snapping moves. I hope other games take a piece of WR and implement it into their games, they need some of that 'STRIKE!!' actionation!!

Plus, the way he killed them was rather thooperlicious, especially the sleeping ones.

I love Ninja Gaiden...so much freedom, like you said. But I'm not sure that type of thing would work for Oddworld...but from what we've seen, looks like Stranger has that sort of freedom in a different way. Sprinting through and bouncing off stuff and all.

Infact Stranger actually sounds much much better than that according to what Abe Babe expierenced in her little demo she played when she visted OWI reciently. Word is the game itself and the levels are like miles across and it is easy for you to get lost in. Stranger is an exploreing mechanic thus it will provide all the freedom in the world for you to go anywhere but there are probabally in game limitations but thats expected. The stealth aspect of Stranger will most likely be his ability to climb and run throughout those swamp trees we saw in the X-Factor last year. There is some conceptual art that depicts Stranger hanging upside down from a branch hideing from some hunters. It could have been Mcgraw not sure who it was in the picture.

But from what Abe Babe said in Oddchat the game it self is also real close to the CGI movies which makes it even more intresting than any typical game.

That's what caught my attention. Polygon said that OWI may be planning on making a couple more games out of this Stranger engine. If the graphics are as incredible as Abe babe says, these Stranger games may be big hits in the market.

If that is realy true (and I see no reason why she would lie about it), then Oddworld will set a new history mark in the gaming industry. They already did back in 1996 when OA got released by making the extrordenairy CG movie of quality never seen before. And now a game engine with the same quality. Also something never seen before, Oddworld is just top quality when it come's to gaming.

back to the subject:
I don't think Oddworld will ever have unlockable characters, it doesn't make sence on Oddworld, unless 2 heros have exactly the same desteny...

or, maybe with different objectives in the levels, yeah, that could fit... same areas, other things to do...

that is a kind of good point, except that in MO you could use either Abe or Munch and the story was the same for cutscenes. i could care less about changing the FMV's (though that sounds fun too) but since the character model and its attributes could easily changed without chaning the level, it is just one more way to expand replay without a lot of work.

I'd most like to see all five characters in the one game, where each is controllable, such as the function used in Munch's Oddysee. The complexity of the puzzles would be enormous, as with five characters to control, the possibilities are endless!

If I remember correctly, was it not said somewhere, that at the end of the Quintology all five characters would have to help eachother, or something along those lines?

yes, they have to help each other, but that doesn't mean they will be all playable at once, they can split in lil groups, with some game situations as in munch (2 playable characters), and maybe solo, or 3 at once, or 4 or 5...

much combinaisons...

I'd love for all five playable characters to split up and go on side quests that in some way connect to the big picture in the end. Oh, the possibilities!

I'd also love for Oddworld to be 100% explorable. I know, it sounds impossible, but it may be possible in the future. Here's an idea. Have Oddworld connected to Xbox Live, so any info that wouldn't fit on the actual game disc will be coming to you through the Xbox Live. This could make great game possibilities. That way, you could explore what you wanted to explore, and go where you wanted to go. I'm tired of being led by the hand with levels...the path already laid out. Part of being a hero is to decide where to go, what to do.

What do you kids think?

Thats a wounderful idea Oddguy but I think that idea has already or is being constructed in Stranger. Abe Babe said it her self the levels are huge and about exploreing. OWI's goal is for us to have that type of expierence. You don't have to have X-Box Live to produce such a game and that is proof of how OWI wants Stranger to be. And I bet thats how they want the rest of their games to be aswell. I believe Stranger will be the first Oddworld game to actually fullfill that Oddworld dream of ours. To actually go in and really explore that vastness we saw in AO and AE. And now that we hear the graphics of the game are real close to CGI graphics, it just makes it even more amazeing. I drool thinking about it. I mean think about it, it boggles the mind ya know?

I don't think Xbox live will be involved, plus I don't think it's technically possible to create a whole world on a server and let the xboxes connect to him, the loading times will take hours!

It is fully possible Xavier. The game wouldn't load the whole world at once, it would merely load the area you begin in, and then continue to load different areas as you go to them.

you will have to get a hell of a connection then, anyway maybe in the future
but i don't want oddworld to be 100% explorable, it would take off the mistery of some places (like necrum)

But Xav, Oddworld surface area should be very approximately 1087 British billion kmĀ³. I'm sure there'd be plenty of mystery left after a lifetime of exploration.

Equally, saying that entire area can be constructed by the Inhabitants is perhaps a tad optimistic. We don't yet have a total Earth simulator, yet.

I know. It'd amazing. You could have a regular game option, which leads you on your journey, or the Xbox Live version where you choose where to go, what to do.

Exactly. With enough research, funding, etc...it is possible.

I know, nothing of this magnitude has ever been atempted to my knowledge. An Earth Simulator is a good place to start. Hmmm, maybe I'll take this idea and start an Earth Sim. More realistic would be an America Sim...with all of America mapped out and explorable. Then, if that's successful...the world!

I'm not just going to create this Sim from my home. I know it won't happen right away. I just think it's something to aspire to. And it's not the only thing on my list of stuff to do in life. I'm first going to start with small steps until I'm able to take the big ones. If nobody pursued their dreams, we wouldn't have more than half of the awesome stuff we have today.

I couldn't say it better myself Oddguy. There is nothing wrong with being optimistic. Infact look at me I am a very optimistic person and so far it hasn't let me down. I can say that my optimisim got me to where I am today. I created my very own studio business in Illustration and production. Infact I am looking to create my own animated DVD full length films through my business as soon as I get the proper equipment and learn it. But I aspire to learn it even when I fail. Towards myself I feel like I am another Lorne Lanning. And let me say this Lorne Lanning when he was about our age he most likely felt the same as we creative people feel now. Now there is a man with awesome optimisim.
