Try my flash game

Hey all, finally got around to uploading my first foray into flash game making last night, let me know what you think:

Bare in mind, depending when you view this there may not be a preloader, so if you just get a white screen, wait a few minutes and it should pop up.

I like the motion blur.

My one criticism is that you need to give more warning that powerups are about to wear off.

I can't remember what the pickup was, but the effect was to make me invulnerable for a short period of time. And then it wore off and I exploded.

the shield is a big and blue and envelopes your ship, and when it gets knocked off you get a loud klaxon and a flashing red bit on the screen where a previously full bar annotated as "shield" is now an entirely empty bar. At which point the shield is flashing for about 2 seconds, giving you as many seconds worth of invulnerability until you can be killed.

Not sure I could warn the player anymore

I worked that out pretty quickly - It's also something that's clearly stated in the "Options" section (although shouldn't that be called "Training" or "How to play" or something since you don't toggle any settings there?)

Other then that, it's been fun enough for me to come back to and re-play twice now. :P

Okay, ignore my last post. I misinterpretted what the blue glow around the ship was; I thought it represented a special invulnerability power up, but now I assume that it represents shield strength. Is that correct?

Is there a way to pause the game?
At the end, when you're tallying up the scores, the process is really slow. I'd recommend speeding the animation up slightly, and if the player clicks whilst it is happening, skip ahead until it's finished. I don't like having to wait.

It seems a bit wierd that one glancing blow against an asteroid will completely drain my shield. Can you reduce the effect to give me more of a chance of success?

Because the game is unfinished the options menu became a how to play section pretty late on.

The single shot shield idea was basically to give you one free hit before you die; it's a kind of "last as long as you can" game. You can get your shield back though by going through the rings

Glitch, I think I found a... er, glitch. Right clicking to bring up that menu that I have no name for causes the ship to go off-screen and become immune to flying space rocks. Thought you should know.

It lags quite a bit but that maybe just my PC. Anyway for your first flash game, Its pretty impressive.

That's flash 11, pretty new development in the area of 3D flash; it lets the programmer utilise the GPU rather than just the CPU so you get all sorts of fancy effects like normal maps, dynamic lights, 3D models that don't use ints for their vert positions (MD2 wobble time), and shader effects.

Currently working on a flash 11 game with a friend, when it's gotten to a decent enough level of quality I will probably post up some tech demos of it on here.
