Sask: The Glukkon that Odd Forgot

I was watching some ancient Oddworld video clips tonight, and I stumbled across this tour of Oddworld Inhabitants, circa Munch's Oddysee's release:

It's not a bad watch. Lorne Lanning is taking the press on a tour of the studio, and it's very guerilla. I didn't expect to learn anything from the tour, as Lorne is merely rattling off names of characters and species. There's a nice bust of Sam in there that I hadn't seen before though.

At 3:37, however, something caught my attention. Lorne mentions "Lulu and Sask", and you get a brief glimpse of two artworks depicting two glukkons, one of whom is strikingly familiar, one of whom is not. According to the video, Sask is Lulu's boss.

I did some digging and came across a post from Wil, dated January 7th, 2002:

:
Lulu's first prick at employment took place in an unimportant abatoir, under the fiercely supervising Sask, only one promotion above Lulu.

One day, Sask was out of options, and ordered Lulu to slaughter the Scrabs himself. Then Abe and Munch came along, and made Lulu slaughter the Sligs instead. Not only was the demand for meat met, but scrap metal was left over and sold for extra profit. The Cartel was so impressed, they promoted Lulu to the head of the FlubCo Fat Fuels Facility.
I added all this information to the Wikia, which you can see here.

Case closed, right? Wrong. I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen Sask somewhere before, and after some personal deliberation, I remembered the many additions to the RuptureFarms Annual Board Meeting in the opening of New 'n' Tasty. There are two glukkons on the opening panel. One of them is Lulu, also referred to as "Lil Lacky". The other appears to be called "I Brown Lackey" or "Capt Wanky", but the glukkon's full-body portrait is undeniably Sask. Interesting!

As Lulu and Sask were the petty managers of an unimportant abattoir—likely a small RuptureFarms branch—in the original iteration of Munch's Oddysee, it seems that the new Quintology has already been embracing the forgotten storylines, we just didn't know it yet.

EDIT: Courtesy of TOGG and Xavier's divine archival skills, I bring you ...

Fun fact 1: I actually taped that office tour on VHS from Jim TV (Belgian channel) burned it on DVD, ripped it and put it on the Oddworld Cinema. Only to have someone else putting it on YouTube

Fun fact 2: at some point someone screwed up at OWI and used Sask's head instead of Lulu's on Oddworld.com's universe section:

That was both a depressing, yet poignant story.

Impressive, Kevin! It has been right under our noses all along! Also:

:
Sask was Lulu's boss before Abe and Munch came along. He was a Chump Glukkon, and was the direct superior of Lulu. He might have been the son-in-law of the boss of the apparently-abattoir facility they both worked at, but I'm not so sure about that. Lulu describes him as fat, and throws darts at his portrait.

It is quite odd in retrospect, but that's the name of the game!

Was it you who added these references in to the intro of New 'n' Tasty?

Wow
For the times I've watched that video in the past I seemed to just gloss over the mention of Sask. I merely brushed it off as "oh that's Lulu's boss okay, one of those things that didn't make it in to MO" and carried on... I've def seen that pic in the togg, I'm pretty sure at least.

Nice job bringing this forgotten glukk to light or no one would have ever given him a conscious thought...

Oh. There he is

Some more info about Lulu and his boss:

:
Lulu worked for Flub Fuels, staffing a tiny filling station out in the middle of noplace. You wouldn’t believe how bad he was at it. I heard one time his boss came in to find him with his feet up reading a juicy gossip magazine, except this one time was every single day! No wonder nobody got suspicious when Abe and Munch were making him super rich for no reason.

Nice find, Xavier! It would have been great to have some in-game action with Lulu to help build the surreptitious relationship between him and our heroes.

Someone with better video editing skills than me can edit a glukkon face into the "Like a Boss" video.

If anyone is interested, I found the original account of Lulu and Sask, which is far more detailed:

:
Well, this is the different status levels of Glukkons that you'll find on the terrain of Oddworld. These guys are always running factories to some degree, as managers or CEOs or whatever. This guy's based on Mullock; he was the one from Rupture Farms in the last game, right? And we started to see some of these guys, these wanna-be Glukkons; we call them Jr. Executives, in Abe's Exoddus. These guys have more power than the Jr. Executives, who have more power than the plant managers, who have more power than the shop steward. So these guys are just puds, he's a chump, he's a wanna-be, he's a Big Cheese, and he's a Glock Star. Now, this is the social hiearchy of the male Glukkons. Then the females are queens and they're in a whole different level.

In the story of Munch's Oddysee, they find that in order to get back to Vykker's Labs-which is where Munch escaped from, and where Abe's mother is being held captive-they're told by the Almighty Raisen, "There's no way you guys are gonna get to Vykker's Labs; it's impregnible. It's huge, it's a fortress. You're never gonna get in there. Unless... There's one way; there's this one incompetent Glukkon named Lulu." This is Lulu: he's just a Pud. His business card would say "Lulu: Pud."

What you have to do is you have to make Lulu's job successful. You have to make Lulu successful at being a Glukkon. So you're operating behind the scenes as Munch and Abe, and you'll be possessing Lulu and doing different things with him, and you'll be reading his itinerary, all the things that he's supposed to do.

And you'll see little video blurbs, like the first time you see him, he'll be sleeping and another guy, Sask, who's his boss, who is just a plant steward guy, will be yelling, "Hey, you idiot! Wake up!" And Lulu will be saying, "Uh, yes, boss!" And he'll be yelling, "Lulu, you've gotta do this and if you don't do it, goddamnit, you're fired! That's it; you'll be through!" And Lulu will be there, going, "Yes, boss!" But when he leaves, he'll go, "Duh, what'd he say?" and the way that we do him will be cute and funny. And what you have to do as Abe and Munch, who are available on your controller at all times, is that you have to get Lulu promoted through the Glukkon ranks.

So, let's say his first task was there was a pen of scrabs in the back yard that need to be chopped up, and those 500 pound of meat should be sent off to such-and-such a facility. And you go, ok: Abe and Munch, they could possess Lulu and get him to GameSpeak Sligs around and get them to chop up the scrabs, turn them into meat, and get the job done for Lulu, but in the end they're just looking for meat. His bosses don't know necessarily that it's scrab meat. Lulu just needs so many of those round barrels of meat to be successful at his job, by which he'll get promoted. And if we do that, he'll get promoted. However, that's bad quorma, because you're chopping up scrabs.

So, around the corner, there's a Slig picnic going on, a Slig company picnic. You could chop up all the Sligs, out of which you'll get the same barrels of meat, but you'll also get several extra barrels of scrap, because Sligs have mechanical pants. So now when you deliver that to where it was supposed to go, not only do they think you did what you were supposed to do, but you also got these extra materials, too, this scrap. And it's like, "Lulu, you're a genius! Not only did you get the scrab meat here, but there's all this scrap, too! How'd you do it? You're a clever guy!" On that basis, Lulu's given missions definitely give you bad quorma. However, there are always multiple solutions, so that you don't have to get bad quorma as you're promoting Lulu.

The idea is that you're promoting Lulu up through the ranks, so Lulu is staying with you on your playing field though at least half of this game. There's all these Lulu missions: it's like, "Ok, Lulu, at this plant over there, those guys ran away because the Mudokens scared them off. You've got to go over and get that place operational again." So you take Abe and Munch and go over there and try to get the place to work for Lulu, who's always falling asleep, smoking his cigars, reading girly magazines, that sort of stuff; he's never doing what he's supposed to be doing. You've got to get the operations happening for him.

Considering how cruel that the Sligs and Glukkons are to his kind, and that they now use Mudokons in their food (their meat for Mudokon Pops, the bones of their ancestors and the tears of tortured Muds), I have absolutely no sympathy for them. Sure, Abe and Munch may be eco-terrorists, but they're not the ones who drove many races to endangerment and extinction, or decided to cut up their workforces just to make a quick buck. Sure, I may sound callous, but I don't have mercy for cruel people. And the Glukkons and Sligs, with very few exceptions, are VERY cruel.

But they're just cogs in a machine that's much, much bigger than either of them could possibly understand. They don't know any better; they think they're living life the way they're supposed to. Even Abe thought "he had a good job" once upon a time.

I'd always wondered about the strange Glukkon head on the original Oddworld.com Lulu page. I'd never even heard of Sask, but things like this really make you wonder how deep the Oddworld-canon rabbit hole goes.

Also, maybe this concept art from Munch's Oddysee was supposed to be the Flub Fuels where Lulu worked? The building seems to suit the interior view of his office right down to the shadows coming off the fan blades.

But remember, Sask was the manager of an unimportant slaughterhouse, not FlubCo Fat Fuels Facility. Also, that picture looks more like a simple fuelling outpost, as opposed to the facility where Lulu was promoted, which was a refinery.

:
The Flubco Fat Fuels Facility refines aviation fuel by sucking it out of unfortunate inhabitants called mudflubs.
Also:

:
Now, how do we harvest fat from a mudflub? A recycler, of course—a big one, attached to the Flubco Fat Fuels Facility and sticking out into the pen. How do we get the mudflubs into the recycler? A crane! And if there’s a crane, then that means Munch can jack in and possess the thing… and what kind of mischief could that produce?
The concept art seems fairly limited. The appearance of barrels also suggests shipments are being made to this outpost, as opposed to the fuel simply being refined there, and then sold to consumers.

But remember, Sask was the manager of an unimportant slaughterhouse, not FlubCo Fat Fuels Facility. Also, that picture looks more like a simple fuelling outpost, as opposed to the facility where Lulu was promoted, which was a refinery.
I was talking about Lulu, not Sask. I'd already quoted the statement that it was a Flub Fuels filling station out in the middle of nowhere. I could go completely recursive in the style of some movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but one quote should do.
:
Lulu worked for Flub Fuels, staffing a tiny filling station out in the middle of noplace.
:
The concept art seems fairly limited. The appearance of barrels also suggests shipments are being made to this outpost, as opposed to the fuel simply being refined there, and then sold to consumers.

Given the fact that both these pieces are not only aesthically similar, as well as having continuity between the two (shadows cast in the view of Lulu's office, match up to ventilation fan seen on the exterior of the station), they are by the exact same artist.

Also:

I love that you're using a quote from 14-year-old me as Evidence.
If you were any quicker to try discredit all of my theories Kjj one might consider that you disliked me.

JayDee, I don't dislike you; I disagreed with you. Don't take it personally. It's called an open forum for a reason. If you've got a problem with me: Message me.

As for my rebuttal:

:

I know what you said, but you haven't inferred what I said correctly. Let me clarify: If Sask was the manager of a slaughterhouse, why would he have a staff portrait at Flub Fuels?

Glukkons aren't exactly the most resourceful or aesthetic beings though. It wouldn't be beyond them to reuse the same design schemes for low-budget franchises. The Soulstorm Micro Brewery came flat-packed after all.

The final product of Munch's Oddysee also reused many of the same assets.

Wil has always been a voice of authority. Furthermore, everything that he quoted is evidenced in this interview.

Don't be obtuse, kjj. Just because there's a photo of Lulu's boss doesn't mean it's Sask. Lulu worked in a number of businesses.

What's more, if we assume that you're right and Sask appears in the opening cinematic of NnT, then he's got a moustache. The boss in that picture doesn't have a moustache. Ergo, it's not Sask. And it very well could be Flubb Fuels.
