Rubik's Cubism

MOD EDIT: This thread split off from WDYLL here.

Back on topic, I thought I might photograph this mighty accomplishment
It originally took me 3 days to complete, today at school I solved it in 20 minutes and when I got home, it only took me 5 minutes. I'm quite proud of myself actually.

You have more dedication than I do, I would promptly show Mr. Rubik the general direction in which I would like him to fuck off. lol

The easiest way to solve it is to take the colours off and put them back in the right places I've solved the rubix cube lots of times using this method

I hope by "colours" you mean the cubelets. If you do the stickers it will look ugly and feel wierd.

I split this discussion off to its own thread. Mainly because I wanted to post this video and couldn't bring myself to spam up WDYLL.

This was built by a bunch of my students.

I taught them labs in Intelligent Systems and they were building that robot at the same time in a different unit. I was spitting chips, as I had wanted to do a Rubik's Cube solving robot in my final year and wasn't given permission to do so.

My supervisor didn't allow it because it wasn't enough of a real-world problem and wouldn't look good enough in industry when I came to applying for jobs. Meanwhile, those guys got on the news and had job offers before they'd even graduated.

But aren't you supposed to be able to decide your own project? Like, I understand that they'd advise against it, but you should be able to make your own decisions x_x

Anyway I think maybe it's because that even a few years ago, people weren't so much into "funny"and "creativity" when it came to professional shit. Maybe they were more into practical stuff. I dunno though. But today's world seems just about crazy enough to accept an rubiks cube solving machine.

Though in a way it seems awesome enough for any time period.

Projects have to be approved by a supervisor because cost/benefit.

Rubik's Cubes are quite fun.

I was invited to a friends a while ago and she had one laying around. Spent about four hours with it until I completed it.

Then, everyone was drunk and there was no alcohol left.

sigh

I read somewhere that no matter how messed up the cube is, you can always solve it with a certain combination and number of moves. If that's true it's just a matter of memorizing and practice. The robot ealier works with the same principle I think.

I've never heard of such a pattern and if it did exist it wouldn't be used in a world record. There are certain methods for switching square x and square y without rearranging the rest of the cube. A cubist (or whatever the demonym is) needs to memorise these methods and must be able to quickly figure out which ones to use.
