Want to Learn How to Mod and Edit Sprites for Oddworld: AO and AE

I want to learn how to do mods for one of the first two Oddworld games, as well as learn how to edit sprites and create new backgrounds for my mods, but I need guidance.

How do I edit Abe's Odysee or Abe's Exoddus? How do do edit sprites of the player, NPCs, and enemies? How do you create new backgrounds for the levels? What level editors are available to the public, and how do I work them?
