In short, content. All of the internet revolves around content, curated and selected by some arbitrary process, whether it be upvotes, likes or just a plain old algorithm. Forums don't use that. Oh sure, there's rep, but it's not like you can see rep associated with a particular message. No, on a forum, you read a disjointed conversation, top to bottom. Doesn't work as content, it's just a communication system.
Reddit is communication and content at once, basically prioritizing certain communications into content. You hop on Reddit, threads are by how rated they are. How good the content is. Comments are by upvotes. How good the content is. Oh sure, you communicate, but you're there for content.

Also, in the case of OWF it was probably a mix of our attitude, our total lack of anything interesting happening and nothing to say or do except start the third sex thread.
