Locked Sections?

Hello,Elumfan here. I'm confused about certain sections of the forum being locked most of the time, like the "Oddworld Disscussion" section. Is my rank to low to post topics in that forum? Or is there something else to it? Any help is appreciated.

New members can’t create threads until they’ve been registered for a certain amount of time, and have posted a certain number of times. It’s a new implementation designed to encourage new members to properly use the stickied threads and the search feature. Whether it’s a worthwhile solution, or whether it’s overkill, remains to be evidenced.

Good feature. It prevents a lot of flooding.

Do you have statistical evidence to back that up?

I think it's a great idea. Keeps the nubs and advertising bots from making useless spammy threads right from the start.

To be more precise; new members must have been here for more than three days and have more than 15 posts to be able to make new posts in GD, OT and RPG. They can still start new threads in Oddworld Help, Forum Suggestions & Help and Welcomes and Birthdays.

It also keeps perfectly apt members from creating sensible threads without lingering here for some time, which may cause them to get bored and not bother. And there’s no sure way to tell if that’s happening.

I believe it a necessary precaution. Unless the number of posts needed is high (say, 50-100), I think the benefits outweigh the risks.

A 'necessary precaution'?

This is about cutting the fat of a few posters on an internet forum, not increasing inflation to steady the economy.

The benefits? It gives mods ever so slightly less work, work that was hardly strenuous or tiresome.

Yes, I was going to say it stops those advertising jerks from blowing it off from the start. The worse they could do is post in just any thread or like Nate said, starting new threads in Forum Suggestions & Help, Welcomes and Birthdays or Oddworld Help.

This is an idea of pure genius. It definately seems to be working somewhat over in General Discussion curing the problem of "Is there any new Oddworld games coming out, etc.?" Simple search makes the world happy.

Okay. I'll change it to one day, and three posts.

The two major reasons behind the restrictions are to prevent adbots creating new advertisment spam threads, and to prevent new members from posting new threads when they are able to search.

Consideration will be taken in the future to whether or not we should continue or discontinue this scheme.

Alcar...

As a note, you can still start a thread in FC without a postcount. Nate missed that.

I agree with this rule, it stops people using this site for pointless, non oddworld related discussions. Whoever made up this rule, I'm glad they did

Uh, Peter...if it wasn't AbeBabe.

I thought that first day I joined I couldn't post or even make threads. Fortunately enough, the second day I could.

Me, actually. But Alcar implemented it sooner than I expected.

As for you not being able to post; this is a new rule so it wouldn't have been because of that.

I think that it was good as it was. Can you put up a message when new members register to inform them about this?

Yeah that's the whole admin approval process for new members which has been here since the beginning...I think. Regardless, it seems to have worked wonders in the way of "Oddworldsuckscock" what a joyous member name that was. =P
