Rupture Farms's architecture...

Perhaps this belongs in Oddworld's Q&A (and if it is, feel free to merge) but on the other hand it can promote some discussion.

While studying Rupture Farms very carefully to build a representation of it in Minecraft and also while looking for stuff to talk about during my Let's Play, there is one thing I did notice which begs the following question:

Just why DOES Rupture Farm resemble an oil refinery and not a meat processing plant?

To quote the long-arse list of stuff I noticed during the LP:

:
* Rupture Farms has a lot of pipes but apart from the barrels, ocassional meat grinders and falling carcasses, there doesn't seem to be a lot of machinary inside it which resembles a meat processing plant apart from what's seen in the intro... At least Soulstorm Brewery had lots of vats visible in the background and tear extractors, likewise with Feeco with its trains, Bonewerks with its piles of bone dust...

* ... But the many, many pipes visible in RF's background don't seem to serve a purpose other than to look generally industrial. What are both they and the chimneys with big flames coming out of them for? I know Glukkons like to build stuff in ways which waste resources, but does the plant refine oil as well or something?
I mean, check it the pictures below - It also explains why oil refineries always reminded me of Rupture Farms since I played AO. I know they're the epitome of industrial architecture but thinking about it now, it kind of bugs the over-critical part of my personality 'cause of just how impractical it looks as a meat plant. :P

On the other hand, the whole Oil Refinery motif really does the job well to make RF look oppressive, alien and cold compared to the native environments in the game - Or even any of the industrial areas featured later in Abe's Exoddus.

Everything Rupturefarms looks like scaffhold, though that could be to represent the poor working environments.

I'd say it produces its own energy needed to make the Meat packing plant fonctionnal.

That's what I always thought. It was because of the Zulag 4 flames in background that I "had a confirmation" for that theory. Maybe not, but I think it makes sense.

It's a meat refinery.

No, that's not right. It's an unrefinery. Extreme industrial processing. You do not want to eat any of their products.

Except of course, for Le Petit Tumor, which remains unspoilt.

I like that it looks nothing like a meat packing plant. The fact that it's so gigantic, polluting, and unnatural speaks volumes about the kind of 'edibles' they produce there.

Like BM said, it's an unrefinery. They take putrid, insect-like animals and process them into what I can only guess is the Oddworld equivalent of pink slime. A malleable, completely unnatural slurry base from which they can make almost any other product. I wouldn't be surprised if said slurry also acted as an explosive and engine coolant.

Now that makes a lot more sense - In fact the whole idea of that makes it seem a LOT more sinister than it already is. If only it was implied a little better that their meat products were totally unconventional, perhaps through background images in later levels.

Thanks all.

I think its due to the fact that Rupture Farms probably only uses 1% of each animal they kill. Its like PG Tips, they only use the tip of the finest 'quality' Scrab beak. Then they burn the rest. Who wants an inferior product, amirite?

Actually, one thing I find weird is that all the walkways are thin planks. I know its due to the 2D perspective and a gameplay thing, but why are there so many places that Sligs cannot reach, even though they are the Gluk's lackies? It'd make more sense to make stuff accessible for them, anyway... xD

Considering their profits are in the toilet, and RuptureFarms products aren't exactly "quality", they probably use 100% of the animal, even the inedible parts. I wouldn't be surprised if the extent of their processing was dropping entire live animals into a giant grinder and then pushing the mush through different molds like one of those Play Doh presses.

Sounds legit. I was thinking too far along Aperture lines where they randomly box products to be unboxed immediately, or do loopdeloops in their delivery pipes

I sort of assumed the pipes were like the wind tunnels or something. :L

but i do like the look even though it does look more like an oil refinery, it suits it
