Groovy, funky, surreal and catchy as fuck. Oh man I am absolutely falling for this album.

Mr. Bungle, I was listening to that album and Disco Volante just yesterday, for the first time in forever. I don't like their first album as much as I used to - the only track that comes close to anything on the last two is Dead Goon.

Disco Volante I've never properly gotten into, actually. It's so bizarre and abrasive, and takes a while to really get going. I need to give it a good sit-down sometime soon.

As for the first one, it's my second favourite from them at the moment (was the only one I truly loved for a long, long time), but after listening to California so much in the past few months I can say that the former totally blows the latter out of the water. The debut, while still has some spectacular songwriting and musicianship, can feel a little bit too homogenous (which California is nearly the polar opposite of).

I used to find Disco Volante quite unusual, and I can still understand why it's not accessible to a lot of folk, but I actually find it quite easy to listen to and quite far from bizarre (but this is after god knows how many years of being exposed to it - maybe I've just grown used to it the way I've grown used to Trout Mask Replica), and I love Trevor Dunn's fretless bass tone on Platypus. Mac Sirloin, should you read this, you should look at some of Dunn's stuff if you're still interested in bass.

Actually, on the subject of bass, Rockette Morton, ladies and gentlemen.

Dunn's basslines are among the greatest. But I feel like the bass isn't as prominent on California as the debut, or even Disco. Maybe it's just more subdued, but the bass lines just aren't quite as memorable or amazingly played (Dead Goon, Girls of Porn, Carousel).

That album's much more layered and subtle, so the bass, for all it's still important, isn't as clearly heard. I think Spruance features more prominently on California. He had an important role on all three albums, but that clean surf tone on CA is integral to the sound of the album (and he did it all on some Mexican strat which he sometimes tries to get to sound like a Danelectro). Spruance's other work is well worth looking into, actually. A lot of microtonal stuff, drawing from music of the middle East, such as that of Azerbaijan singers (and his Eastern influence isn't as gimmicky as some of the stuff that was put out in the '70s by the Beatles and whoever have you).

I've been listening to a lot of Stravinsky as of late. The music's getting old (some of it's 100 years old), but it's still fantastic.

They were playing The Rite of Spring on ABC Classic FM the other morning for its 100th anniversary. I was excited to hear it, because I don't have any recordings and it's definitely not the kind of thing that usually gets airtime.

Do you know who was playing it (I suppose I could look it up myself)?
They played it at the BBC Proms last year or the year before that (or maybe even the year before that - I don't know, I'm senile), and I enjoyed it, but I have a recording of it conducted by Stravinsky, and I've yet to hear a version I like more. There are better recorded versions, but I like the nuances in this version. Sometimes it feels like the orchestra's a player piano, and Stravinsky's pedalling it.

Incidentally, they're playing some Zappa at the proms this year (The Adventures of Greggery Peccary). If I could afford to go down to London to see it, I would.

It's beautifully made, but the songs are thematically, and lyrically very pedestrian.

I played it for my girlfriend a couple weeks ago because I have a really hard time finding common ground with her musically (she mostly listens to country), and I thought she might like the pretty nature of the songs. I asked her if she liked it, and she said it sounded nice, but was kind of stupid. I was just like "Yeah. I was kind of hoping you wouldn't pick up on that."

The music is nice, relaxing. Like the sort of thing you'd listen to on a Saturday morning.
