Abe's Oddysee 100% speed run

Hello everyone!

There might be a 100% speedrun thru AO starting soon (by Cremator), if you are interested in seeing it or can help please take a look at the SDA forums here:

Anyways, sorry to bother you, but if you know anything that may be of any help during that run, any bugs/glitches/exploits you can share, it would be great.

I just thought I'd let the biggest oddworld community know

Also if you have any stuff like that or would like to state that you are interested please post in the SA forum thread (link in the first post) and keep it bumped, cause there's not much oddworld fans out there

Doesn't that shortcut skip out on some scrubs? The speed run is supposed to get them all.

Considering I die a thousand deaths when playing AO, a 100% speed run would be a must see for me. I'm constantly in awe of people who can do speed runs period, let alone someone who does an Oddworld speed run. Good idea, niebezimienny!

Ahh, sweet! I've never heard of a speed run, but I can play through both of the Abe games very fast.

So I'm guessing that a speed run means you go through a game with out dying AT ALL and saving all Muds???

Well you have a volunteer if you need one.

In most speed runs I've seen, dying can be a fundamental part of achieving a lower speed run time. Although, off the top of my head, I can not think of any area in Abe's Oddysee where doing so would be favourable. Neither Abe's Exoddus as well, Munch's Oddysee / Stranger's Wrath, perhaps.

How can dying improve the speed? Unless you're going to kamikaze the enemy.

In AO and AE, dying only bring you back and resets what you have done, so it wouldn't be a good idea, the same goes for Stranger

Only in MO you can cheat death

So a speedrun in AO would mean the runner would have to die the less times possible, because not dying at all is impossible

No guys, a 100% speedrun would obviously segmented - a person that patient to go thru the game single segment and resque everyone has not been born yet. This means that for example after rupturefarms the game will be saved and the recording will be continued from that moment.

In some games when you die you return to a starting area or something. If the starting area is where you want to go, then dying will get you there, probably quicker than walking.

Not aware of there being many glitches in the Oddworld games. Glitches often help in speed runs, cus they can sometimes take you between places very quickly.

Abusing death to get to places quicker is against SDA rules and will not be used, most probably. And besides I can't find a possible use for that since dying 'loads' an area and the only places where this could be useful is rupture farms revisited where there always are mudokons to save.

I wasn't aware there'd be so many rules.
How sad that we're given RULES. Well, obviously no cheat devices, but apart from that, it's stupid.
Generally, I get through to Rupture Farms 2 while saving all the Mudokon's before then in one day, without stop.
I'd be more interested in a speed run killing as many Mudokon's as possible as opposed to saving them.
Killing is much funner than saving them all.
My max was around 80-something Mudokon's killed.

I can agree with you there...it'd probably be a tiddle bit faster if it was a killing run rather than a saving run and plus...i agree it'd be funnier lol.

I think it would be best to have a 'get out' run . I mean, if you're tying to do it as fast as possible, I think you should just focous in completing the game, and not worrying about any Muds.

Guilty confession time: There were times where I killed either Abe or Munch in MO just because I didn't want to have to spend the time and energy to get them where I needed them to be. It was faster to kill them if there was an egg where I needed them to be...^_^;

Kewl. I remember going through AO at speed, just for fun, but I didn't do it all at once, I did it by sections, and then added up the times. I think it was just under an hour...

I got 1:23:45 from Mines in AE to the halfway point, the finish of the vaults. Anyway I think AE is a LOT better for a 100% run as in AO the secrets are extremely hard.

You can complete one of the mid-game levels in less than 3 minutes by abusing this. (I don't remember the name, but at the start you have to cross a bridge right away to an area where there's a bounce powerup, and four native mudokons, and you need them to open a gate to the rest of the level).

The shortcut I was referring to in the final level - the screen just below the one you come out on when the countdown starts. Instead of falling down from that one to the next one, just run and jump to the far left. When you land, keep walking left, and you'll cut out a heap of time.

Also, one I found just before in Stockyard Return (the game crashes when you do this on the playstation version. Only do this on the PC version). The screen with the four bombs moving in an X shape, you can go down to the bottom area, and run and jump out to the left (DO NOT STOP RUNNING, OR YOU WILL FALL AND DIE). You'll land on the screen just below the one to the left. (That's the bit where the PS version crashes). If you have a spare rock, throw it away. Pick up two more, then proceed as normal. When you get to the four bombs and the portal, make a path with just one rock.

Where you come out, walk two steps to the left, then throw a rock so that it hits the grenade next to the lever. Immediately walk onto the screen to the left as soon as it hits. Walk back again, and trip the detectors by hanging off the side. Once the slig hits the bomb, jump down and pull the lever. Continue as normal(this saves time deactivating the bomb, which can be really hard). (I'm not sure if you can sneak/run past the slog, but try it)

I have gotten Abe's group of Muds to follow Munch in the Dead River level!!! It is so cool. I have it saved, so I can pull it up anytime and record it, but I just cannot figure out how to get my recorded vidoes from my camera onto the computer... I really want to show the Forums this, so once I figure it out, you'll be hearing about it.

That's it. Good luck, it requires quite a bit of thinking and a very well-placed jump by Abe. PM me if you want me to tell you the solution. (You'll still have to manage to pull it off, which is difficult)

How is it impossible? It's just very hard.

Added: Ironically, in my opinion, three of the four hardest are very close together - the two paramite-free levels of Paramonian Temple, and the secret in Paramonian Temple. (The other of the four, also the hardest of all, would be the secret on the first screen of Scrabanian Temple. Is it just me, or are those alternating slogs much harder than the near end of game ones?!)
