After attempting to play Heart of Darkness for the first time..

Never again will I make fun of someone who's trying out Abe's Oddysee or Exxoddus for the first time and failing miserably..

Heart of Darkness is like a thousand times harder than AO or AE, though.

Just wait til you get to the start of the second disc. The difficulty ramps up like the transition from Anguish Lagoon to Bongo Hills in Rayman 1.

Yeah, HoD is as hard as Another World/Out of This World. It's not to be compared with any Oddworld game

I don't think I finished the last region, actually.

Loved it, though. I want more games like that, where you discover worlds gradually. The first, silent levels of that game were fantastic.

As great as that game is, I can never remember it fondly because of the god-awfulness of its ending.

I like how I've never finished an Oddworld game, but I did complete Heart of Darkness.

I've got it saved to my wishlist on Steam so I can remember to get it next time it's on sale. There was a 75% off gig a while back which included like...god knows how much added content and I decided to wait. More fool me.

Or possibly he got it mixed up with Victoria II: Heart of Darkness.

Or Spec Ops: The Line, which is based on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

In a transparent attempt to get back on topic, I used to play HoD when I was 7 or 8 on my grandfather's shitty old computer, it was hard as fuck. I loved how varied and violent the deaths were though.

Thank goodness for Google Search By Image, as the inclusion of 'Queensland' in that image was confusing me. That said, it did make a certain amount of sense given that I had a conversation earlier today with a Frenchman in which I was pleading with him not to judge all Australians based on the people he met in the state of Queensland. I might have used the phrase "It's Australia's Texas".

yeah i liked the varied deaths. to be honest i think that might be what initially attracted me to Oddworld. i never completed HoD though.

but those skeletal bat-demon things? as cool as they are i fucking winced whenever they managed to break my back, the crunch really added to the effect. i'm not squeamish, but spines. leave spines alone.

That back breaking death was my favourite thing next to the assholes that ate you in one gulp

Mmmmmm, the delicious sound of a spine snapping under pressure. It warms my very core.

I've never played Heart of Darkness. I have however played Heart of the alien on the Sega CD (which is Out of this world 1 & 2 on the same CD) and yeah it was fucking hard, I don't even remember getting that far into it before giving up.
