This.
I was bullied a lot until my second year of high school. I didn't really get much of it during my first year, but because of my previous years of bullying and abuse I completely isolated myself and refused to talk to anyone.
The reason for people targeting me was the fact that I was small. Underweight, and about a half-foot under the average height for my age. But during the summer in between my first and second year of high school, nature finally kicked in, and I grew up and out. All of the sudden I was taller than most of my peers, and...Wider. So I beat up a lot people who had spent years making me miserable.
This gave me a lot of confidence, and by the middle of my second year I was well known and could hang out with just about anyone, but had a close-knit group of friends as well.

If he didn't have some stupid wooden sword, and you weren't laying down, could you have roughed him up? I'm usually hesitant to suggest beating a person up, but since trying to best him with words is what got you kicked and stabbed in the first place, maybe next time you should just break his nose.
A few tips:
If you're going to hit someone, always go for the nose. It's surprisingly easy to break, and usually when it breaks, it bleeds. And when you make someone bleed, they freak out. They stop. And since they're just going to stand there staring at their blood for a few seconds, slap them in the ears [one with each hand] as hard as you can. Not only will the sound be nearly deafening, but if you do it hard enough you'll fuck up his equilibrium and be able to knock him down quite easily. Then you can just walk away. Or continue. Your call.
