It really was. Since it began airing, it was a piece of shit. People still like the old ones because of nostalgia and people like the new ones because they're "trendy".

I have to agree. The new ones are a bit better, though. The special effects are much improved, although they're still about the same in relation to what's possible, and the acting is better (but still subpar).
The series is full of discontinuities and things that generally just don't make sense, and it's rarely moving or frightening because for some reason you just don't care about the characters. It's especially groan-inducing when the characters think someone has died who can't possibly have (eg, the Doctor) and you have to sit through several minutes of sobs and mournful music before he reappears and everyone goes 'yay'.
Some of the episodes are better, however. Neil Gaiman's
The Doctor's Wife was very good, and Steven Moffat's episodes are better than most - especially
Blink, which is probably the best episode I've seen.
