Dino
This Plesiosaurus was the last painting I ever did. It was 1990 and we were designing a digital paint matte painting system on the SGI at Rhythm & Hues. I was working on a few personal paintings at night to help debug the process. Our ability to use scans was minimal and even our ability to cut and paste was severely hindered, so I approached it in a classic "dark to light" painterly fashion... and used a mouse. It was painful, yet the medium was fascinating me at this time. It was a relief to see that your color palette wasn't drying up and that you could rework endlessly without building up the canvas or ruining your matte board. To me, these were big revelations in a pre-Photoshop era. Oddly enough, Steve Grey and Marcel Samek, the two that were writing the paint software - have also since migrated to the game industry.

Sketchbook Doodles
For the past 15 years about all I've had the time to do is quick doodles. I had rapidly grown more interested in game design, writing, and directing; basically abandoning my hands on art skills. Occasionally, I'll feel the need to jot down an idea, which these doodles represent. Sadly, excellence in craftsmanship is something that can only be achieved by practice, so these drawings are also a testament to my declining skills.

You can see where his obsession with production design comes from. I wonder if when he comes up with a character he draws a quick doodle for the PDs to work from. It would be cool to see them (if they exist).

Lorne Lanning
President, Oddworld Inhabitants
LORNE LANNING is the Co-Founder, President, and Creative Director of the video game development company Oddworld Inhabitants. He has 18 years experience in computer graphics and digital media. He was initially trained as a photorealist illustrator at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and then later trained in classical animation and visual effects at the California Institute of the Arts (BFA). He has an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the San Francisco Academy of Art College and also serves on the board of directors for AIAS, as well as the Advisory Board to the President for the San Francisco Academy of Art College, and is also a member of the Visual Effects Society. Early on in his career, his interest in high technology led him to serve as a technical director at the TRW Visualization Center in Redondo Beach, California. But forever fascinated by the trail of high-end militaristic technology as it trickled into the commercial entertainment sector, Lorne pursued his career in Hollywood. Prior to founding Oddworld, Lorne worked with Rhythm & Hues Studios in Hollywood, CA. Here he grew through the ranks of Modeler, Technical Director, Sr. Technical Director, Art Director, and Visual Effects Supervisor. In 1994 he convinced computer graphics veteran Sherry McKenna (winner of over 40 Clio awards) to be the Co-Founder and CEO of Oddworld Inhabitants. The cinematics from Oddworld’s games have garnered dozens of awards from not only the games industry, but also from the music, television, and film industries as well as illustration & design annuals. Inspired by the nature of property universes created by the likes of Tolkien, George Lucas, Jim Henson and Walt Disney... Oddworld has since been dedicated to the creation of next generation digital universes.

I know, I could never draw that well unless I practiced a lot for many years. Wow.

Interesting discovery, Xavier

Just looking at the detail, especially in that sample of conceptual artwork, you can tell Lorne is definately a skilled man. That concept art really is amazing.
