Well, I won an iPad, that's why I'm asking this. I never had anything from Apple, so I'm completely new to iOS.

Most new Apple gadgets seem to only exist for one thing only: To drain your money. Expensive up front, expensive to buy apps for if you want to actually do anything with it, then when it becomes obsolete in a year, not even the charger or data cables will work with the new model.

Also I dunno if it's the same with using your own data from your PC on an iPad, but I found an iPod 4 in a field earlier this year - Nobody claimed it as lost after 3 months so the police said I could keep it. I gave it to a friend, but when he tried to use his own music files with it, it turned out he had to buy them all again through iTunes... He had it jailbreaked just to avoid that, which would've voided the warranty if he'd bought the thing. It's also impossible to use it as USB data storage like you can with other MP3 players.

Apple seem like a bunch of swindlers these days.

EDIT: Even if you've won it, you still may need to buy apps for it. But hey, at least you won't need to buy it up-front. It may be a good deal for you in this case.

You can enable some nice multitouch gestures in the settings. App switching and stuff?

If the damn thing pisses me off with Apple bullshit, I can always sell it and still have a nice deal. Since the smartphone mania started, I always used Android. It's simple and complex enough for me and it's quality/price relation is, in most cases, excellent.

Was it one of those pop-ups? I won the Nigerian lottery on one of those. I'm just waiting for the cheque.

If you’re not looking to just sell it an iPad makes a really nice replacement for a casual-use laptop. Good for web browsing, lounging around the house instead of sitting at your desk all the time, carrying around with you ...

I don't really like them personally. For starters they are overpriced like everything with the Apple logo slapped on it and I just find them rather pointless. The things that it does such as going on the internet, taking pictures and playing games I can already do better with other gadgets.

It all depends on if you just want one or not, They aren't essential.

But since you won it (by the way congrats!), it's your choice whether or not you want it, you've got nothing to lose!

No, I actually won it on contest made by Vodafone Portugal, so I really am getting one. You should contact the FBI.

I was hoping for that, I don't use my laptop as much as I wanted, because it weighs around 5.8 lbs(2.63 kg), so a light version would be really good for classes, notes and equations. Also, do you know some good app for Applied Math or Engineering?

That's really my stand on this, I've lost nothing getting it, so I might enjoy more than if I'd bought it.

Nah, don't have one myself so I couldn't say. Maybe Numbers (Apple's own spreadsheet app)? I don't know much about math or engineering so can't help you much there.

As for tablet computers my thought is that they are not really useful for anything: you can't properly edit text, images, use AutoCAD or other programs on them. Though tablets are good when you're travelling and need Internet access since they can be charged via cigarette lighter in your car. I myself have an Android tablet for that purpose. Otherwise a simple notebook PC does a much better job if you need a portable computer. As for iPhone and it's analogues I prefer a simple cell phone because I don't need all that quasi-useful fuctionality.

Yes, any Android tablet is better than an iPad. The only good thing about iPads is that they look so lovely. Get a Galaxy tab.

I make question in not even owning an Apple product, knowing the mess that Apple is making to Samsung because of copying stuff including the rectangular shape with smooth corners. Toshiba invented the laptop's "bending shell" (Bending down the screen to protect it) and the company didn't process everybody else who used the same design. Is Apple expecting to make companies making pink trapezoidal tablets or what? And all the money they ask for one doesn't go for sure to the Foxconn workers that are explored the whole time. There's no iPad or iPhone in the world that values more than the human rights. And why also having a tablet that does less things than other one? I would recommend a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 instead. Android > iOS.

I challenge you to find an Android device that isn't made by low-paid workers in China, Mexico or an equivalent industrial centre.

I have an iPad, and it's great. Darkhoodness, I must say most of your ponts are untrue , you ARE able to use your existing music on iOS (you claim your friend had to repurchase all their music through itunes - this is simply untrue).

Nate's previous post is right. I'd bet a $trillion that pretty much all big companies use cheap labour to manufacture their product lines.

I find Apple products to be beautifully designed, fast and fluid. Apple write their own operating system (iOS) specifically for their own-designed hardware, which is how they manage to get such speedy performance. Safari, in particular, is nice to use (previous to iOS 6.0, anyway). iOS 6 seems quite buggy for me, I'm hoping they get it fixed soon.

If you don't want to spend money in the iOS ecosystem, then you don't have to. Only buy apps that you KNOW you will use. I've made the mistake of impulsively buying apps in the past for iOS believing they'll be great and that I'll get loads of use out of them, only to use them a few times, and then never again. I haven't purchased anything from itunes / Apple in months, yet I use my iPad everyday, yes, everyday, and it's brilliant for what I want to use it for (pretty much just web browsing daily, music)

Apple do like to boast about how many apps they have in their store. The reality is that 99.9% of them are just crap and irellevant to the individual user.. But I think that's the case with android too (and windows phone, bless..)

You can't pit Android against iOS, really. There are so many different Android phones to choose from, and there's only one iPhone, which, they keep releasing under a new label.

Although, I always find Android to be faster, and a lot more convenient. For example, Apple are very clever, your battery dies on an iPhone, you have to go directly to Apple to get it sorted, and most likely pay an absolute bomb. With Android, all you need is something off Ebay.

Another thing is the back button, or, lack of a back button on an iPhone. This means the on screen back button is in a different place every time, which is annoyingly inconsistent. Most Android devices have the back button as a physical button, so you know where it is every time, and it's consistent.

Also, Android OS offers so much more freedom than iOS, meaning you can easily root it, add non-market apps just by ticking a box in the settings, and do so much more. Even able Flash Player on low-end Android phones that don't appear to support it.

And the Android interface is just so much nicer than iOS's and easier to use.

Apple do like to boast about how many apps they have in their store. The reality is that 99.9% of them are just crap and irellevant to the individual user.. But I think that's the case with android too (and windows phone, bless..)
Apple aren't going to be able to boast about it for much longer. Just a month ago they reached 700,000 apps, but Google announced that the Play Store had also reached that milestone yesterday.

For example, Apple are very clever, your battery dies on an iPhone, you have to go directly to Apple to get it sorted, and most likely pay an absolute bomb. With Android, all you need is something off Ebay.
You can buy replacement batteries for iPhone off eBay/amazon too. There's plenty of tutorials that show you how to replace it yourself. Also, I don't really think many people would bother to replace their iPhone battery anyway 'cause unless you're on it literally all the time, the battery should be ok even after 2 years. iPhones have good power efficiency compared to other phones anyway. So you are less likely to feel the need to replace an iPhone's battery than other phones' batteries anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Apple fanboy. But I'm not keen on Android because it just seems messy, and you can get viruses and stuff. iPhones have good security.

What? An iOS virus was developed way before an Android one, and the chances of getting a virus on it are very slim, unless you're an idiot who downloads stuff you shouldn't be. And what do you mean by "messy"?

By messy, I mean the user interface looks inconsistent.
