I dunno an art thread or something

Starting a new NOA&L thread because I feel like dumping this shit somewhere other than Tumblr. This is going to be a really long post, so I apologize ahead of time.

Wow!

I'm not very good at commenting on art, I fear, but this is really good. I'm a particular fan of the phoenix and dragons and suchforth, though that's a personal preference I'd love to see more of those sketches finished!

+Rep for the amazing artwork as well as the Rayman 3 reference.

I love Rayman 3 soooo much.

Nice man, you've got some crazy talent there. Mind telling which graphics tablet and painting software was used? I'm kinda interested.

Aaggh thanks guys. Your comments mean a lot. Really.

@MM:

@Splat:
Unfortunately, most of those sketches were spur of the moment sketches just to keep my Tumblr fairly active. I may revisit them sometime in the future as completely separate projects, but it's unlikely I'll ever finish the ones you currently see as I already consider most of them to be finished as they are.

@Crashpunk:
I KNOW IT'S SUCH A GREAT GAME?? Then again, most Rayman games are fantastic, excluding the dreaded Rabbids. They're essentially their own franchise now anyways, though. You can expect to see the occasional Rayman fanart. I love the games about as much as I love Oddworld.

@Dyna:
Thanks, man. You're not bad yourself.

@Mill:
Uhh, I think it's a Bamboo Fun. I'm not sure which model of fun it is though because apparently there were 3 or 4 different versions of it. The drawing surface is very small... about 4"x6" and I've had it since '07 if I recall correctly. It's kind of falling apart. As for software? Most of what's in OP were drawn/painted in PaintTool SAI, and occasionally I'll open up Photoshop CS5 to do touch-ups, experiment with the tools, or to do a short animation.

Anyways, more stuff.

I really ought to start working on environments more. I always neglect them for creatures.

Heheh, it just takes practice. You'll get the hang of it after awhile. You just gotta keep trying.

I found a few other old things lying around that I forgot to throw into OP, so I'm gonna make a post for them right now. Also, pay attention to the end because there's a link to something I spent the last couple of hours on.

This was about the best I could speed paint landscapes/environments about a year ago. Not very impressive in the slightest. (sorry for the Homestuck I hope you guys will forgive me)

This was how I could speed paint a few months later. My most recent speed paint is the jellyfish-like creature in my last post. This is a perfect example of how not to do perspective, by the way.

Everything else is going to be temporarily posted to dropbox, so if you view this post in the future and the images are missing they were probably taken down to make room.

These three I drew sometime yesterday when I was trying to get motivated to actually do something. The first two, the button creature and metroid, I plan to sculpt. The last one is just there because Rayman is great.

AAaaand I couldn't sleep because I had a tune stuck in my head... so I spent a couple hours and made this. It's uploaded to dropbox, and I can't guarantee it's going to stay up forever, so if you like it feel free to download it. It's a song for a level concept I've had for awhile. I strive to be a game designer one day, and fleshing out levels is my favourite part of working on games. I'll do a speed paint of the level eventually. Probably won't be until sometime in March because I've got quite a lot of shit on my plate until then. Feedback would be appreciated; I'm still pretty new at music composition and production.

TL;DR: I MADE MUSIC FOR A LEVEL CONCEPT I HAVE YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO IT

Small bump. I'm taking "emergency" commissions, if anyone is interested or just want to pitch in a few bucks.

This is actually only half of its original size because it was a commission and only the person who paid me gets the full version blah blah yadda yadda.

Also, made a signature for another forum. Bet you can't guess what the forum is based around because I totally didn't make it obvious or anything.

Also, while making the commission post, I was digging through files to find anything I could possibly exploit and totally forgot that I've done pretty detailed pixel work before. Years later, and I'm still really proud of them even though the first one still isn't finished.

Oh. Almost forgot. Got another song I'm kind of working on. I don't really like it that much so I have no idea if I'm going to finish it.

Oh god Thunderaffes.

I can't say much about the art, but I feel qualified to comment on the music. I can hear similarities to the Rayman 1 soundtrack. Was that intentional? Remi Gazel is absolutely fantastic and he's a good artist to copy. I'm not sure how musically trained you are, so did you mean to write in a complex time signature?

I like the percussive feel. I don't like the marimba(?) doing the percussive feel in alternating bars at the start. Rhythmically it's good, but I would get rid of the pitch changes as they took away from the effect. I'm not completely convinced you chose the best moment to introduce tubular bells. The trading of the rhythmic idea between piccolo and piano was fantastic and really gave me something to grasp on to at the end.

All in all I liked it. What did you put that together in?

Thanks, guys.

@Phylum-

Lots of questions in there, yikes. The similarities are certainly not intentional, though long before I'd actually picked up music I would study the soundtracks of my favourite games intently to get a better feel for what I'd be doing, and Rayman 1 was one of them. You might hear similarities to Croc and Oddworld in some of my pieces, as well. The only musical training I've had was learning how to read sheet music (learned when I was about 6 or so) and I took band for a few years playing an instrument I was already familiar with. Other than that, I know no music theory or anything, and pretty much self taught, and a lot of my work with audio has been trial and error. I'm not 100% sure what a complex time signature is, but yes, I intended to write in 3/4.

Yeah, that's a marimba. When I have my headphones again, I'll export a version without the pitch changes to see if it fixes the problem.

Where do you think would be a better place to introduce the tube bells? I hadn't originally intended to use them, but as I was working on the song, I just suddenly thought, "DANG, THIS NEEDS SOME TUBE BELLS." and so I threw some in. Do you think your opinion would change whenever I actually finish the song? Because the part where the tube bells are introduced isn't supposed to be as bare as it currently is, and the emptiness might be what makes it seem so... sudden? I guess would be the best way to describe it. That one is also a bit slower than I want the finished result to be. I think the entire thing sounds better and gives off a better feel at 145bpm.

Everything was done in Reason. I think I'm using version 5, but I'll have to check again to make sure.

Anyways, yeah art stuff updating thread small bump

I'm so happy I found my camera. The final picture is 4 charms out of a set of 12. They're the A1 trolls from Homestuck, and I fully intend to use them specifically to get people to want to buy custom charms and shit off me. They are very tiny, very detailed, and made of Creative Paper Clay. The grey thing is a Deny from Rayman 2, and it's made with the bacon clay I made a big deal about some time ago.

I've always been jealous of people who could actually sculpt things from clay. Mostly because I've tried to hard, so many times, and never at all been able to do very well in my own opinion with it. I applaud your attention to detail.

Are you sure about that? Sounds like 4/4 to me

Actually, it's 8/8, which is essentially the same thing. The difference is that rather than being divided into four groups of two quavers (ie, 2-2-2-2 with accents on beats 1 and 3) 8/8 is divided up as something else (in this case 3-3-2 with accents on each of those beats).

That may not be very clear.

Also, I hate people who have natural musical talent like that. I work my arse off and can barely do anything.

Wait really

I thought Tiny Box was in 3/4 and Twisted Bulbs was in 4/4 but I've never fully understood time signatures soooo

Oops.

And don't worry it made enough sense that I understood it. Actually now time signatures make a lot more sense than they did before. Thanks for that.

There was something else I was going to say but my internal clock is telling me to sleep so my mind is mostly shut off right now. If I can remember whatever the hell it was I was going to say I'll edit this or make another post when I get online later.

@Oddey:

Aw, you've just gotta keep trying, man. With sculpting it's getting a good grasp of that third dimension. If you work particularly slow, just pick up some kind of polymer clay or some nice, sturdy modelling clay and spend a day or two just messing with it. Try to envision what you want to make as if it were already done and lying before you. Since neither of these clays air dry, it'll give you plenty of time to work things out and discover different ways to make things work. It takes practice, and a lot of patience, but if you can get past that you can do anything.

If you ever feel like trying to sculpt again, I'd be more than happy to give you pointers and critiques.

ANYWAYS HEY I JUST DREW THIS PICTURE OF SPAWN and by just drew I mean i did this like 8 hours ago and wanted to share it since I haven't updated anything in weeks.

On a technical level 4/4 and 8/8 are the same. They have the same value of notes in a bar. The difference is in notation and interpretation, mostly. I didn't make that clear enough before.

Hey now, I can have trouble drawing certain things and still be notably good.

I should stop bumping this thread so often and start focusing more on my poor neglected Oddworld art thread.

And here's a couple things I drew while I was still in highschool I've always been particularly fond of.

@Oddey:

Thanks! I'm glad you like it.

@Vyrien:

Yep. That's the point to all of my creature designs. It always irks me when a creature is designed in a way that would make it impossible for it to exist among us.

So, as you guys may know, Nep is working on a game thing. I offered to help him out because games are awesome. Right now I'm just helping out with concept art.

Also, sorry ahead of time. This might be difficult for anyone using the Industrial skin to see. I've found I really enjoy working with letters and making graphics/logos and such. I really should start using vectors for them, though.

Also also I made a really short cute song for someone recently about a fat cat. They liked it so I figured I'd share it.

And to end this post I'm going to shamelessly self promote my newly made commission post which is so much nicer than my last attempt. If you can't directly help out but still want to do a thing, I'd appreciate it so much if you spread the post around so more people see it. Thanks!

You're the one that has no formal music training, right?

The piece is interesting. If my keyboard wasn't unplugged I'd analyse it in a bit more depth, but a few things stuck out. Don't be afraid to reuse rhythmic ideas. I never felt like I could tie those countermelodic voices down. They don't have to repeat themselves, but I feel like if that higher voice had something to come back to it would feel more secure. The viola(?) did a few funny things with regard to voice leading, but if you are the guy with no formal training then that probably won't mean much to you.

The middle felt very much like it was developed as it went, which isn't the worst thing given that this is in arch form. Really, this just gets easier to deal with as your write more. When you get used to what you'll need to do while writing the piece, you can start making better plans and mockups etc. The only trouble with that is when you realise that you're naturally bad at composing and all of your ideas are terrible.

If you aren't the guy with no formal music training that posts pieces here every now and again then I appologise because some of this may be stupid. Either way it all still applies.

You're the one that has no formal music training, right?
I think that might be me you're thinking of.

I personally rather liked the piece; very calming and soothing in my opinion. Also, I absolutely love the red glow in the picture.

No, I don't have any formal training either. Everything I've posted on this thread was just a matter of me tinkering with sounds until I thought it sounded nice enough. I haven't shared anything that I planned out, yet.

Phylum, I didn't really understand most of your first paragraph. Maybe if I ever catch you on Skype we can talk about it in more detail and you can help broaden my vocabulary in regards to music. This isn't something I think can be easily discussed in a not quite instant manner.

And honestly, I'm surprising only the middle sounds like it was developed as I went because the entire piece is something I put together in one sitting without much thought outside of "this needs to be pleasant, cute, and uplifting", which from what I understand I magically accomplished. I had let it sit there for awhile because I got stuck but when I came back to it there was only a couple of things I could think to tweak and then I just called it done because nothing else was coming to me.

If you see me on Skype feel free to talk to me about it. I'm in a tough spot with my compositions right now and anything to help me straighten out ideas in my head is welcome. Do bare in mind that I'm inexperienced and still very much a student.

Slightly fixed up version of the song I never did export and send to you in that chat.

The next few pictures are probably going to stretch the hell out of the thread. I've only gotten two commissions so far, both $10.

And this poorly drawn mess I told someone I'd do for them awhile ago.

I like the Rapunzel one. It's almost Impressionist.
