Thread Necromancy

Can someone please tell me why "Thread Necromancy" seems to be frowned upon here? It sounds pretty stupid to me; if there's a good thread, but it's older than 30 days, it's "out of bounds"..

I replied to a thread that was apparently "2 years old", which of course, I was unaware of.
So, I got accused of "Thread Necromancy", even though I had actually bothered to write 5 paragraphs about the topic.

What is honestly the point of having that as a rule?
It's not as if I'm doing something wrong by replying to it.. if anything, I'm actually bringing back a topic for discussion.
Why on earth should it matter how old it is?

Like I said in another topic you posted in, it comes from a history of idiots posting 1 word replies to 3 year old topics. It also depends on the topic itself, replying to a topic about shoelaces is something totaly different then replying to a topic which only made sense 3 years ago and doesn't have any baring on today. You'd expect most people to have the common sence to know that difference but apparently that was the biggest mistake ever. That's pretty much were this (unwritten, btw, I think) rule came from.

It depends on the person doing it and in your case we have no reason (imo) to hunt you down and hang you upside down by your bowls at the front gate of this website. You seem like an okay guy to me.

I think Thread Necromancy should be okay, if the Necromancer used the Staff of Mannimarco. Either that, or a good Conjuration spell. Plus, the Necromancers Robe would help as well.

No, seriously, if the person who raises it from the dead has a good reason for it (such as having SEARCHED for a topic he could ask his question for example), then Thread Necromancy should be allowed. But yeah, one word replies suck.

So far as I've seen, RF has done no wrong. But most necros revive topics via one-word responses, and some of our members, not used to any resurrection other than spam, mistakenly believe therefore that all necroing is wrong.

Yeah. What everyone else said.

Also, I think people were hounding you for reviving several threads in a short amount of time. Even if you are contributing something new (which you were), I think it would be better to space yourself out a bit.

Read what we've written Moxco. Reviving threads is not *always* unjustified. In some cases it's the right decision to make because it means we will have fewer duplicates. We're just saying that members should hesitate before reviving an old thread and only do so if they're sure that their post will be a good contribution.

If these threads, well at least some of these threads, are "out of bounds", then why not just take the time to simply lock them? I've never encountered this problem at any other forums..

:
Also, I think people were hounding you for reviving several threads in a short amount of time. Even if you are contributing something new (which you were), I think it would be better to space yourself out a bit.
If the threads are actually relevant when I post in them, then I see no problem in posting in them. Sorry, but I find it very....ODD.

And I'm not telling you how to do your job, because I don't have the right to, but man, this is a rule we could do without...

:
it comes from a history of idiots posting 1 word replies to 3 year old topics
Yes, even I think that is pointless.
But I don't think there's anything wrong with taking the time (10 minutes at the max) to write an interesting post about the topic that is actually relevant to modern society (The Simpsons is still on. Read up on it).

I'm sorry, but I'm actually offended that you would group me with "idiots who post 1 word replies to 3 year old topics"..

As far as I know, posts in locked topics don't count towards post count. Lock all old topics, suddenly no one has more than 200 posts.

I agree with rapture farms innconce, and what everyone is saying, it's just there are some cases when you could start a new thread if it's realy important, or ask in the Q and A.
I generally avoided old threads, even when I could think of good replies, but I guess after reading this I'll be less hesitant but more mindful.

I think "Thread Necromancy" is a good rule; to those of us who "post 1 word replies to 3 year old topics". I can see these 'posts' are not welcome; and for a very good reason.

But if one of us actually write a fully thought-out post, then it's just unfair to us.
There's really no reason for forcing that rule upon us; the people who actually have interesting answers and interesting opinions to share; even if the thread has been asleep for a long, long time.

Can we come to an agreement on this?

"Hobo", what the hell. Have you even been reading this thread?
You just closed a thread that I posted in..
I thought we'd come to an agreement, but if you're saying that it's wrong to bring them back in a certain amount of time, then....forget the agreement. If you're really getting worked up about it, then I'm just going to have to not do it; even if I think it's the stupidest rule I've ever had to abide by.

As much as I'd love to have a "Fight! Fight! Fight!" with you, I'd rather stay on topic and discuss "Thread Necromancy".

And you're right, Hobo is a mod, and if something's the way it is, it's the way it is.
But I just want to hear more from him on the subject.

Oh and sorry, I forgot that I'm not allowed to use Smilies..
