Obligatory Christmas Discussion

It's a week or so to go, so talk about plans and lists and stuff. I can't remember what normally goes in here, but we usually think of something.

Anyway, mainly an excuse to post this. Christmas? Happy? Nope.

DOOMED, SCROOGE
YOU'RE DOOMED FOR ALL TIME
YOUR FUTURE IS A HORROR STORY, WRITTEN BY YOUR CRIMES
YOUR CHAINS ARE FORGED
BY WHAT YOU SAY AND DO
SO HAVE YOUR FUN, WHEN LIFE IS DONE
A NIGHTMARE WAITS FOR YOU

I forgot we had this thread every year... my bad.

I already had my "big" present in September, which was a new computer. I was very desperate for it though. Other than that, I think I'm getting bits and pieces from my parents. Literally the only thing I know for sure I'll be opening is a Zelda t-shirt from my sister. I can't even remember what it had on it... which will be a lovely surprise!

I stopped celebrating Christmas when I grew into an adult and realised just how commercialised and how meaningless it was, since I'm not religious. I'd rather people didn't give me gifts, and only send gifts in return to those I receive from. But it is an excuse to spend time with families who do celebrate it, so I enjoy that, at least.

However, there's one thing I can't stand - Why do all the shops play terrible covers of Christmas carols in the background at this time of year? The end of my last shopping trip left me seething a little.

Do you at least eat lots of food, get drunk etc? Christmas has never always been about religion. None of my family are religious and we've celebrated it forever. It doesn't have to be meaningless!

I love Christmas, it's still my favourite time of the year even though I despise Winter.

Obligatory.

Christmas casts a grey cloud of despair over each and every second of Winter, permeated only by the thin, fragile ray of sunlight that is the day when the council picks up my discarded Christmas tree and everything returns to the regular state of tacky, depressing commercialisation which does not require me to suffer the haunting rattle of jingle bells which emanates from my television perpetually.

This is the first time ever in my life that I hate Christmas.

Just haven't really got anything special to look forward to and don't feel any excitement, plus I've had to spend money and wrap presents which drives me insane!

Another problem, my mum likes to have the radio on when she's in the kitchen, oh how I hate walking into the kitchen and hearing the same christmas songs that are overplayed on the radio every damn year!

I'm a Scrooge this year, I really really really hate christmas and can't wait for it to be over!

On the plus side, I'm single in time for another Christmas which is great because thats one less person to buy presents for

Yay, Christmas.

I really don't celebrate Christmas much, I like the holiday but not the food and the decoration and such. Only Christmas drink I really like is glögg (Or mulled wine or something). It's delicious.

Oh and presents? Eh, I hope I'll get the first Futurama season and Paul on DVD. That's about it. I already bought Rayman Origins, Dark Souls and a pair of headphones for myself and they're wrapped up already. A bit sad because I couldn't find the seventh season of Frasier.

Lemme make things clear 'cause people don't read my posts carefully:

:
But it is an excuse to spend time with families who do celebrate it, so I enjoy that, at least.
Other than that it means nothing to me.

:
Do you at least eat lots of food, get drunk etc? Christmas has never always been about religion. None of my family are religious and we've celebrated it forever. It doesn't have to be meaningless!
No. I can do that at any time of year to celebrate any event I chose (such as Birthdays). Christmas isn't one of them - Just the time when Christmas cake is available. And I like Christmas cake - Its nice to share too.

I'm with JG on the expensive gifts and the annoying carols - I mean I don't mind carols if they're performed traditionally, some are really nice, but as I said earlier what's with the crappy pop covers that you hear everywhere at this time of year? They annoy me so much.

As for gifts, I like to give gifts for birthdays or for the sake of giving gifts as meaningful goodwill gestures when I feel like doing so. I don't like how I'm expected to give and receive goods just because "that's what everyone does at this time of year". That doesn't seem like a good reason for me. Of course I do it anyway to keep up good relations with people (especially my nephew), but I still don't agree with it.

(that also may be 'cause I don't have very much to give, nor do I want very much either)

Did I mention that the commercialism of it all annoys me as well?

But THE MOST THING I HATE when it's christmas time is the adverts on TV. ):

My god you guys are a bunch of sadsacks. I love the fuck out of Christmas, and I hate both Jesus and consumerism. Snow is beautiful, christmas lights are pretty, and familial warmth is abound.

I had an argument with my friend about this very matter. He kept probing me about why I like christmas, as I'm usually very nihilistic about these things and I'm not christian. For one, "christmas" is about as christian as Danzig's pubic hair. It's a bunch of pagan rituals practiced long before Christ was a celebrity.
I like christmas because - even if it's somewhat fabricated - people are a little nicer and more generous around this time of year. It's really not that hard to avoid the commercialized aspect of christmas and keep it in your own way. Christmas is a great excuse to exchange gifts, eat until you're sick, and spend some well-earned downtime with your loved ones.

As Dr. Suess put it;
"Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."

Also, Muppet Christmas Carol is the best christmas movie ever. Right next to Bill Murray's "Scrooged".

Feelgood factor, eh? I'll see your Christmas Present and raise you a Reformed Michael Caine.

My local shopping centre had real reindeer running around an enclosure. Observations: 1. Their antlers are highly asymmetrical. 2. They are genuinely cute. I smiled at Santa. I still felt like a kid again when he smiled back.

People over here got really hyped over this ad:

I'm having octopus this year. A concession to me.

I also pointed out that there's no reason to conform to a fir tree every year, though I lost that argument.

Next year I'm having a Hanukkah Bush.

Mmm, Christmas the only thing that stops me from crawling into depression every winter. Fuck the snow though. Fuck it up the bum. Oh ant it'd be better this year only my sixth form is being a little whiny bitch and is making us stay for an extra three days. Therefore rather than meet up with my mate for a third day before she goes back to the USA for good, I'm stuck in school learning about how Russia fucked themselves up the bum with Lenin, how the English language fucked itself up the bum by stealing other languages shit, and how the British economy got fucked up the bum by pretty much anyone with more than £3 to their name.

Fuck. But I do like Christmas.

However, there's one thing I can't stand - Why do all the shops play terrible covers of Christmas carols in the background at this time of year? The end of my last shopping trip left me seething a little.
I was 10-pin bowling for an end of year celebration and the staff decided it would be a good idea to play Christmas songs. They proceeded to play all of Michael Buble's new CD. The whole damn thing. I fucking hate him.

Also, this is the best Christmas song.
