The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants

The book has finally arrived and it totally rocks.

I know the mods have made a rule that no-one may post images from the book but I assume that we may quote text. If not, I will edit this post.

Here are a few things I found out that I did not know/realise previously:

-Farzad did not actually design Abe, Molluck and the other early designs. It was Steven Olds.
-The third weirdo worshiped fleeches, not meeches. This is a bit strange as fleeches are not native creatures.
-The alternative Munch designs are funny as.
-In fact this is a running theme where alternative designs are shown: In all cases the final image is definately the best of the lot.
-The 1%er was actually a meetle concept. Doesn't really look like a beetle to me though.

It says that the searex was in a video. Which one was that?

My fave pics are Ma'Spa - where the Gabbits go to breed and the funky little birds on page 226.

If you haven't bought this book yet - what the hell are you waiting for? Go order it NOW!

Haha, well that certainly is a kick in the pants for the Mudoncho theory. I suppose you can see the similarities between the ‘Mudoncho’ spirit's headgear decorations and the Fleeches' tongues, though. But still, why worship Fleeches? It doesn't seem to be common Mudokon practice now.

:
-The 1%er was actually a meetle concept. Doesn't really look like a beetle to me though.
And that explains why it says “Meetle” on it!

:

Don't know which one, but I know that while it was planned that the Sea Rex would be a gameplay obstacle when swimming with Munch, they later changed it to appear only in video. I'm guessing that video was cut - it may simply have been an extended version of the opening underwater sequence.

Ma'Spa? You've just described the Spawnin' Springs! Weee, name changes! And I'm really glad you love the birds.

I'm getting utterly anticipationary now.

You are perfectly entitled to post spoilers in the Spoiler Forum, but it would be unfair on the book's sales if we allowed you to post images here. If you want to see the art of Oddworld Inhabitants, buy The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants!

octigis are parasitic creatures that feed off well dressed professional hosts. kinda eww
interns apparently have been amputated at the ankles to stop them running away.
vykkers were supposed 2 have medical robots which were supposed to hunt u.
ok thats enough. hope i'm keeping in line. if i shouldnt have posted these just delete the post.

ps the weirdos dont worship the native creatures from what i can tell. the paramite, scrab and fleech are all part of the ceremonial themes assigned to each of the weirdos

Okay, sorry, I guess I just assumed that they worshipped fleeches because the Mudanchee and Mudomo tribes worshipped scrabs and paramites. And Alf was so insistent that there was no tribe that worshipped the meech. So I figured it made sense.

Again, I apologise for any confusion.

No, none of all. In fact, no images of meeches at all, aside from the Meech Munchies poster. I thought it was a strange absence but I guess they're intentially trying to restrict information about the meeches.

There are some remarkably candid explanations from Mister Lanning on why Munch wasn't what he wanted it to be.

This is a summary of what the book says about Luskan Maruaders (or Lusks) are scavenging mercinaries that will even turn on each other. They don't care about anyone in their group, and could leave them hanging, not caring what they would think.

My horrible description of them:
The Luskans are covered by an exoskeleton and walk on three legs that have claws at the end. Their arms and head stick out of what appears to be a shell. Surrounding the head are six mandibles. They look like a crustacean.

‘Lusk’ coming from ‘mollusc’, I like it. They do sound like... interesting characters. Just reading about them, they sound like they could be any old marauder from Fighting Fantasy or whatnot. I wonder what part of society they specifically are meant to parody. Thanks Al and all for your spoilers. I am so looking forward to this book.

Yeah Nate_dog_bark, is right about that. Munch was supposed to be the guy with a split personality, when you made him mad he go crazy, kinda like the Hulk, but I won't say any more about that, you guys will have to get your books

Well the book says it was origionally intended for Munch, The only information specifically about the Luskan was written next to the drawing.

It was on a page about how they often come up with characters and designs without clearly intending them to go in a game; just to get the creative juices flowing. I suspect that they were designed in the Munch era, not necessarily FOR Munch. So don't hold your breath that we will see them any time soon.

Just remembered something else: the page with Kinto Slaves describes them as being bred specifically to be slaves to Maggie (there's a cool picture of them dragging her around) but there's also the design we've seen before with the old description about how they live in the forests and don't like anything above their heads.

I'd say this is a case of a design evolving to fit the plot.
