Compilations and soundtracks are fine as long as they're mainly by one artist.

Oh man, so many lists this week.

1.) The Killers - Hot Fuss. Hands down without a shadow of a doubt my favourite album of all time.

2.) Led Zeppelin - BBC Sessions OR IV, I absolutely cannot decide and the BBC Sessions is a compilation of tracks from lots of albums so I dunno if it counts.

3.) Tycho - Dive. This is one I've listened to a lot as I've gotten more and more into non-instrumental music over the last couple of years. Extremely relaxing, real nice.

4.) Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenna to Heaven. This album got me into the Post Rock scene. I went to GSY!BE's concert in November last year and it was one of the most moving musical experiences of my life.

5.) Rage Against the Machine - Battle of Los Angeles. Okay not much to say about RATM and BoLA in general, plunged me into rap metal, crated the embryonic soup that would incubate and nurture my political leanings for my more recent years and was a fantastic outlet for my younger teenage angst.

6.) This is such a hard choice, because there are so many that rank equally for this spot. I'd probably have to go with Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese after much deliberation. Primus needs no introduction and StSoC is again the first album of their I heard.

Honourable mentions: Dead Kennedy's - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Apples, Rammstein - Rosenrot, XXYYXX - XXYYXX, Death Grips - Exmilitary, The Automatic - Not Accepted Anywhere.

I have listened to every Pink Floyd album past Dark Side of the Moon. I have them on a playlist on repeat and they are a fantastic study aid for learning Japanese with. They're all wonderful.

I actually think I prefer The Final Cut in all honesty (Controversial opinion ahoy) but I couldn't be bothered cropping any of the images I could find. My opinions mean so little to me I will change them for the sake of laziness. I'm that shallow.

Anyway here are mine.


Killing Joke: Pandemonium (Favorite Song)
Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols (Hard to pick. But this is my favorite)
Iron Maiden: Dance of Death (Favorite Song)
System of a Down: Steal this Album! (Favorite Song)
Hell: Humans Remains (Favorite song)
Machine Head: The Blackening (Love the whole album. Was hard to pick a single song. However this one stands out)

I really struggled to pick a favorite album from Killing Joke, Iron Maiden and SOAD. I adore most of them.

Also I realize Killing Joke are quite a niche band nowadays, but I HIGHLY recommend them. I've seen them live so many times and they are just fantastic. They are a post-punk band from the UK who have been going strong since 1978.

Musically, I think I'm the closest to Crashpunk's list, which isn't incredibly close, still. I really like Hell, and I absolutely adore SOAD. Sex Pistols are classics, Machine Head is quite good. Yet, having about 400 albums (with 4445 songs, according to my Zune player) in collection with various genres picking even 20 feels unfair to the rest of the artists.

My family have some close relations to that band. My uncles (who are both music fanatics.) have been personal friends with them all for years. We all saw them live a few months ago in Nottingham as well. Fuck me they know how to put on a good show.

Duh. Not much I need to say about this one. Really awesome music, and a timeless classic.


Van Dyke Parks - Songs Cycled

It's really hard for me to not fill this list with VDP's discography. The guy has more musical talent in his pinky finger alone than most professional musicians. This collection of songs is him at his finest, being musically accessible while still keeping his intricate style. It's a fairly eclectic album, but it still stands up as an entire work.

Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz

I struggled to not put Illinoise here, but on the whole Adz is just a more complete experience for me. I'll never forget the first time I heard this album. The songs are powerful, eerie and meaningful. It has an excellent pace, and every song hits right where it should. It takes you on a huge journey, and by the end of Impossible Soul I always feel like lying down for a while while the melancholy washes away. This album actually makes me feel physically weak.


Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Goddamnit I'm conforming to the norm.


Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes

I fucking love these guys, and this album is probably their best. It's 3 guys in a studio performing songs they love. It's simple and gritty in a way that their later stuff isn't. The songwriting doesn't compare to the rest of my list, but the performance is world class. Gordon Gano has a really weird voice, but it's perfect for the songs (which he wrote, unsurprisingly). For people who maybe haven't heard this, it's the album that Blister in the Sun comes from.


Sufjan Stevens again - Silver and Gold

I tried really hard to not repeat artists in my list, or include Classical shit that none of you care about, but this is probably one of the most special musical anythings in my life right now. Every year my friends and I get excited about the point when we can safely listen to/sing christmas songs without feeling weird. Every year we sit around and talk about songs on this album, and what we like more or less than the last year. It's entertaining, easy to sing along, easy to talk about and just a heap of fun. It's the perfect representation of why I love music.


e: Actually, replace the Femmes with The Wings - Venus and Mars. That's fucking fantastic.

I found about them by accident, really. Musically-wise there's no reason for them not to be really popular, their stuff is mostly great. On the other hand, I find their overly-satanistic visual appearance a bit silly.

Crashpunk and MeechMunchie, you're missing much by not listening to PF/Dark Side of the Moon. I really recommend them, though for a rock band the most part their music is slow-paced, jazz style. Also, I have to warn you not to listen to Dark Side of the Moon with headphones, or just keep in mind that one of the tracks ("Time") starts with really, really loud bells, which can be hurtful if you listen to it with high volume.

WoF, you should really listen to Meddle if you like Floyd that much. It's just a notch below their classics, which is saying something. Worth it for Echoes alone.

As for my six favourite albums...








1. Integrity - Those Who Fear Tomorrow. A furiously apocalyptic merging of heavy metal and hardcore punk. Killer guitar solos, riffs, and psychotic vocals. I've never heard anything like it, even after thoroughly exploring the genre it helped birth.

2. Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children. It's relaxed, it's eerie, it's emotive, it's euphoric - this one's got everything. My go-to baked album and one of my all time favourites.

3. BTMI! - Vacation If Bomb the Music Industry! isn't my favourite band of all time, they've at least got the most consistently powerful and dynamic discography I've ever heard. This band helped me through a lot, and I could put any number of their albums in this spot; but this, their swansong and probably their magnum opus, is a celebration of youth, mistakes, and feel good pop punk songs. Band helped me through a lot of terrible times, and I feel that this was their pinnacle. I wouldn't start here if you want to get into them though. Start from the beginning and work your way through. Their evolution is amazing to watch/hear.

4. El-P - Fantastic Damage. Oddball, paranoid-sounding hip-hop with Orwellian themes and schizo-robotic beats. A tough one to explain. Just listen to this. Crazy album.

5. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West. Oh, Modest Mouse. Their 90's work is borderline perfect, and this one, in my humble opinion, is their finest hour (and ten minutes). Cynically sincere, hilariously snarky and devilishly groovy, TLCW is a 70 minute trip through the American midwest, in all its depressing glory. I mean, I guess. I've never been there myself. But this album, and the two albums it's sandwiched between, certainly paint a picture.

6. Mercyful Fate - Melissa. Certainly my favourite album from a genre I've always held close to my heart since I first found Metallica in seventh grade: metal. It's theatrical, fun, intense, and just jams and riffs and solos fucking hard. The musicianship is amazing, the vocals are, well they're the best! And the theme/concept fits perfectly with the sound. Never gets old, not one bit.

That seems to be the favourites list these days, it's always subject to change though of course. I'm looking forward to check some of you guys' favourite records (starting with Pet Sounds, I've been putting that off for way too long). Hopefully they don't suck. just kidding I'm sure they're fine and music is subjective
