I mean I watched a documentary, the name of which I forget, which suggested that they could develop onto a tier of intelligence equal to what our ancient ancestors achieved perhaps a million years ago, within the next few million years.

The smartest ones are roughly on par with a 5 year old human child, I think. I read that somewhere intelligent. They can get smarter in groups as well.
