I don't see any developers pushing their own projects aside to port a couple of games that won't get them any recognition and will likely only sell to us fans and a fair amount of intrigued people at best.

There are plenty of companies out there who specialise in porting games and never develop original ideas. An example of this would be Digital Dialect, who ported AO and AE for PC.
In any case, many development companies out there end up working on other people's ideas, particularly when working on licenses. Given the current publishing arrangements in the gaming industry, there are very few developers out there who can afford to have their own original projects.
With respect to sales of the games; AO and AE have sold very well on Steam. There is no reason to assume that the only people who would be interested in MO and SW are people who are already fans.
