Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

Running The Gauntlet
“Haigar. I need to talk to you.” It was a few days after the bombshell had been dropped. Bailey’s idea had been developing since that evening and now she was ready to put the first step into action.

The dark Steef looked at her. He’d been very occupied since he’d been told about Loki, and though Bailey knew some of his preoccupation was for his younger sister, there was something else as well… Bailey shook herself. She’d turn her attention to that later, but right now she needed his help.

“What about Bailey?” The pair were walking companionably through the village now,

“Which one’s Karnan?” Bailey asked. Haigar stiffened at the name, but he nodded angrily at a rather short Steef male with thick horns and red-blonde fur. Bailey narrowed her eyes and sized him up as an enemy. She then turned resolutely to Haigar. “Blue. I need to know how to fight.” Haigar looked at her in utter surprise.

“You want to WHAT!?”

“He’ll fight me, I’m his size and he’ll think he can win. But I need to beat him. Haigar looked at her, eyes wide.

“He could kill you.”

“I’m not letting them hand over Loki to someone older then Stranger. It’s not going to happen.” There was a pause. “Jelani’s daughter is not going to get off her lazy butt to save Loki, so I will.” Haigar was silent for a moment.

“It’ll be tough.” Bailey nodded as if she’d expected as much,

“I’ll do it.” Haigar nodded sharply.

“Alright then.”

¤§¤

Bailey sat on a large hill, the valley was spread like a blanket below her. Haigar had told her to meet him here, and he’d teach her to fight like a male Steef. She stood up as she noticed two Steef, one dark and the other paler, coming up the hill towards them. She grinned as she recognised them,

“Hullo Haigar, hullo Chiron.” The tribe leader’s son nodded and smiled at his human friend.

“Greetings Bailey. Haigar told me what you plan to do, and here I am to help you out. You’re going to need it.” Bailey nodded, grinning ruefully,

“So I’ve heard.” Haigar cleared his throat and Bailey looked at him.

“I asked Chiron to help us out, he’s more the same size and build as Karnan then me.” Bailey nodded. Chiron was only a bit taller then she was, and though he had pretty impressive horns he wasn’t as broad and strong as Haigar. “Alright, let’s begin.”

Three hours later and Bailey had never been so tired in all her life, but though she was battered and bruised, Haigar would not let her stop.

“Karnan has more stamina then any of us, you’ll need to increase yours if you have any chance at all.” Bailey grunted and pushed against Chiron. The young blonde Steef had his head lowered and Bailey was holding his horns, and they were straining against each other.

Bailey wasn’t as green as Haigar had first thought, she could hold her own, but her stamina and technique needed to be brushed up on. She couldn’t use her small size to her advantage either, she had to fight like a Steef, not a human and that meant throwing her body weight into it and using her muscles, not her agility.

Sweat slid down past Bailey’s eye and her muscles screamed in protest as she fought to hold Chiron at bay, she didn’t even have the energy to try and force him back. Suddenly, vaguely and as if it were far away, Bailey heard a voice through her exhaustion,

“Alright, change!” and suddenly Chiron pulled back. Bailey jumped back as well and though her mind and body were tired, her sub-conscious knew what was coming. She spun and caught Haigar’s horns as he charged her. This was hard, much harder then Chiron. Bailey was tired and Haigar was stronger then the pale Steef.

She began sliding back.

“Fight!” hissed Haigar, “C’mon Bailey, you have to fight back.” Bailey’s knees almost buckled but she locked them and panted.

“I- I can’t.” she panted, “I’m so tired.”

“Fight me.” Haigar growled, he wanted nothing more then to pull back, he hated put Bailey through such torture, but if she wanted to save Loki… Bailey’s stubborn heart suddenly came into play. The human dug in her heels and with a burst of strength and a yell she pushed Haigar back. And then she dropped to her knees. Completely exhausted. The two Steef collapsed beside her, one on each side.

“Good Bailey, very good.” Haigar muttered. Bailey flopped onto him.

“But good enough?” she asked. Haigar didn’t answer.

“Let’s hope so…” Chiron muttered.

¤§¤

Bailey was put through the punishing combat training for a week. None of the adults were told, but Loki was and she felt a small ray of hope on an otherwise dark horizon. She came now, to watch Bailey fight. Though the human was better now she still could not match the Steef. Loki cried the first time she saw the training session, how hard Bailey was pushed, how tired she was and how much she hurt after each fight.

“You can’t keep doing this to yourself.” She whispered when Bailey collapsed on her stomach onto the grass. “It’s going to kill you.” Bailey picked her head up, she grinned tiredly.

“Nah, I’ll be fine.” But her eyes told a different story. No matter how much she improved, no matter how well she could fight and for how long, Steef were superior to humans. There was nothing more that could be done.

“We’ve done all we can. The rest is up to you Bailey.” Haigar said as the three Steef and the human trooped home. Halfway there Bailey’s legs gave out and no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t get up again. Haigar hadn’t needed to think about what to do. He’d swept Bailey up as he’d seen his uncle do and sat her on his back instead.

“Please, don’t do it Bailey, I’ll go, I’ll go to Karnan, just don’t do this, you’ll be killed.” Loki pleaded, but Bailey was set, even if she was riding Haigar for the time being.

“No Loki.” She fixed Loki with a stern, human stare, Loki looked away, unable to keep the gaze and she argued no more. Finally they reached the village and Bailey slid down from Haigar. Even so she kept hold of a handful of fur to keep herself steady.

Before they went their separate ways, Chiron to his own home, Haigar and Loki to theirs and Bailey to hers, Bailey stopped them and looked at them seriously.

“Not a word to the adults. Agreed?” The boys both nodded, but Loki paused uncertainly. “Loki?”

“Yes.” Loki finally consented, though it looked like she hadn’t wanted to. “Not a word.” Bailey nodded. She gave a reassuring grin that could not hide her nervousness. “See you guys tomorrow.” She said and they left for home.

¤§¤

“The wanderer returns at last.” Teased Stranger’s voice as Bailey walked through the door, covered him mud, grass stains, and bruises.

“Hi Stranger.” Bailey murmured, feeling tired. She yawned.

“Yer played hard again today then?” Stranger asked,

“Uh huh.” Bailey muttered and dropped onto her beanbag chair in the hut’s main room. Stranger came and sat down beside her, he wiped a strand of hair from her face.

“What have yer bin getting’ up ter?” he asked in surprise as he saw Bailey bruises.

“Nowt,” said the human stoutly, “Just bin playin’ rough is all.” Stranger ‘hrm’ed but didn’t ask anything else as Bailey leaned up against his side. She yawned again. “I think I’ll miss dinner…” she murmured, eyes closed, “Just want ter sleep.” Stranger rested his cheek on her hair. He nodded,

“Alrigh’ Bailey, sleep if yer need ter.” Bailey didn’t need any more encouragement and soon she was sound asleep. Stranger rose quietly and took Bailey into his arms. He carried her gently into her bedroom and tucked her in. “G’night liddle darlin’.” He muttered, kissing her forehead and leaving the room silently.

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

The Rage
Bailey woke up early. Her muscles felt stiff but after stretching they loosened and she felt better. She also felt ravenously hungry, so she dressed quickly and left the hut, Stranger was already up and about, helping Daimen with the chores that needed tending, all of them trying to forget the awful significance of today. Bailey stretched slowly and yawned.

“Mornin’ all.” She greeted, she was answered by sullen replies, even from Haigar and Loki.

“Are you hungry Bailey?” Alika asked from the fireside. Bailey nodded,

“Quite a bit.” Alika nodded and served Bailey her breakfast. Bailey ate in silence, her mind focused on the up-coming fight, she felt the snakes of anticipation writhing in her stomach and her heart skipped erratically. But she outwardly remained calm and ate. She’d just finished when Daimen came to the little group of Haigar, Alika, Loki and Bailey, by the fire.

“It’s time.” He said gravely. Loki looked scared and glanced straight to Bailey, Bailey gave a barely perceptible nod and rose. The Steef family – along with the human – made their grim way along the valley, they came to a place where the ground dropped away, into a sunken meadow, close to a copse and burn. The large hunks of rock that sprouted from the ground along with the thicket, produced an arena shaped area. The grass was flattened and scuffed at the bottom, as if it hadn’t had time to grow properly before being trampled.

This was where Bailey would fight.

In the middle of the arena, the short, red-blonde Steef whom Haigar had pointed out as Karnan, was parading around, showing off. Loki stood beside Bailey and suddenly grabbed her hand.

“Please, don’t do it Bailey.” She whispered. Bailey shook her head and looked down into the arena from the small cliffs surrounding it. Karnan suddenly saw Loki and began strutting. Bailey growled.

“Will nobody fight me!?” he roared, not expecting an answer. Bailey looked around, was there really no one who would fight him but her? She saw Chiron, looking nervous, biting his lip and looking pained. Meanwhile, Karnan laughed smugly. “Then I will take my prize!” he bellowed. Bailey’s fists clenched. If there had ever been any thought of backing down, it was gone. Swept away by Bailey’s anger. She pulled off her hat and bandana and gave them to Haigar.

“Hold this.” She growled. And before any one could stop her she clambered down the rocks and jumped down into the arena. Karnan looked at the human and gave a shout of laughter.

“Is this it!?” he roared, “It this all you send me to fight for you daughter?” he sneered at Daimen. Stranger growled and had to be held back by Haigar.

“She knows what she’s doing.” The young Steef muttered. Stranger rounded on him,

“She doesn’t have a clue.” He growled, “She a reckless, impulsive child.” Haigar looked away, ashamed that he’d let Bailey go on this mad crusade.

Karnan was still laughing, but a quiet voice, smothered his mirth like a candle being snuffed out by a breeze.

“If you are so confident, when will you fight me?” Bailey asked calmly. Karnan turned fiery red eyes on the human.

“So, you truly are foolish human, or very brave.”

“I think foolish works.” Bailey replied.

“Fine then, you wish to challenge me?”

“Unless you’re scared and want to back down.” Bailey countered, still cool and calm. Karnan’s eyes blazed in fury.

“You dare to insult me human!? I’ll teach you a little respect by snapping your back like a twig!” Bailey bared her teeth in a snarl.

“Respect? You expect me to show respect when you chase after a lass young enough to be your daughter? You will get no respect from me.” She growled.

“I will make you beg for my mercy!” the Steef shouted,

“Do it then, instead of blowing all this hot air.” Bailey shrugged. The Steef roared, she’d damaged his honour, hurt his pride, pricked his ego and now he’d pound the human just to make her beg for his mercy. Karnan inwardly grinned in satisfaction, it would be so satisfying to hear the human beg. He’d heard stories about Bailey, and the thought of making her beg, forcing her to her knees, breaking her pride, was too good to pass up.

Karnan pawed the ground with one hoof and only one thing came to Bailey’s mind at that moment;

“Damn…Steef have weird toes…”

The Steef lowered his head and charged. Bailey stayed where she was and met him head-on. Grabbing hold of his horns she braced against the impact. It was enough to check the Steef’s charge but still the wind was knocked somewhat out of Bailey’s sails.

But she held. Muscles straining, but holding.

“Not so cocky now Steef.” She growled, but even so, she wasn’t able to mask the pant in her voice. The Steef raised his head fractionally and chuckled.

“You are foolish, puny human.” His legs tensed, and he began to push. Bailey strove to keep her place but she found herself being driven back, sliding on the mud, leaving two grooves as she tried desperately to stem the slide. All her efforts were pitiful and Karnan laughed softly, “I will make you beg for mercy human.” He grinned maliciously, “And when I take that lovely young thing into my bed, I’ll be sure to tell her how you begged.”

Bailey felt it then. A white-hot heat began in her stomach and spread through her limbs. Her muscles stopped shaking and her breath stopped panting. She felt no fear, no desperation. All she felt, was hate, and a deep, unstoppable rage. She dug in her heels and stopped moving. No matter what Karnan did, no matter how he twisted and pushed, he could not make the human budge.

He looked up, Bailey’s gaze had previously been fixed on the ground and his front legs, but now she slowly lifted her eyes. Karnan blanched and his face went white under the fur.

Bailey’s eyes were green. A blazing, iridescent, neon green. Steef eyes. She tilted her head and grinned, baring her teeth in a Steef grin.

“I don’t think so.” She murmured. And then she shoved him, Karnan tried to stop himself, bracing his legs, but he couldn’t. With his legs almost spread-eagled he slid back. He tried to rally, tried to push the human back, but he couldn’t, it was as if the human was made of steel cords. She pushed him back.

His hooves scrabbled for purchase. Nothing helped him, nothing slowed down the steady rate he was being forced back. He cringed as he saw Bailey’s glowing eyes, there was no pity, no mercy in those eyes, just cold, calculating intelligence, and savage enjoyment of his terror. But what chilled him maybe the most, was the silence. Bailey never spoke, just stared at him. And grinned.

Suddenly his back hoof slipped and touched air. Karnan then cried out a plea,

“Please! Mercy!” Only then did Bailey cease pushing him, Karnan felt himself released and he dropped to his knees, feeling more fear then he ever had. There was something unnatural about the human, something uncanny and not to be trifled with. Not to be defied. Karnan begged pitifully. “Have mercy!” He wailed. Bailey grabbed one horn and wrenched it up too her face, so that they were nose to nose.

“Mercy?” she asked in a deadly whisper? “Mercy? Would you have shown me mercy?” Karnan whimpered and trembled and then he cried out so that everyone could hear;

“I beg you, please. Let me go. I relinquish my claim on the Steef Loki.” He shivered, face pale, eyes wide as he stared at Bailey, waiting to see how she would judge him.

“Good.” Bailey said at last. She made as if to turn away but then swung back. “No one,” she said, “No one, threatens my family.” And she threw a punch right into Karnan’s face. He yelped and fell back, tumbling down, a small mudslide and plashing into a very muddy puddle. Bailey stood over the rim and smiled. A deadly, cold smile that made Karnan very scared. But then she turned away and walked across the arena meadow.

She stopped in the middle and looked up at all the surrounding Steef,

“Does anyone else want to fight me fer Loki!?” she yelled. There was a deadly silence and then, a voice.

“I will.” Bailey turned sharply, recognising that voice and not believing it.

“Chiron!?” she gasped. Chiron smiled shyly and scuffed one forehoof in the dirt in embarrassment. He looked up past Bailey and locked eyes with Loki.

Loki, blushed.

Bailey raised one eyebrow as she watched the exchange and then broke into a disbelieving half-grin as Chiron looked back at the human with a shy smile on his face.

“I love ‘er.” He said thickly. “And I want to look after ‘er…if she’ll have me.”

“Well I’ll be jiggered…” Bailey muttered, she mentally kicked herself, and she’d never seen it. “When?” she asked,

“When Haigar was teaching you and Loki watched.” Chiron replied, growing red himself. Bailey snickered, now she thought about it, she did remember that whenever Loki had gotten upset when Haigar and she had been fighting, it had been Chiron who’d dried her ears and cuddled her. It wasn’t that fantastic that he’d fall for her really. Bailey looked at Loki.

“Well?” she asked, “Whadda ya say?” Loki beamed,

“Yes! Yes!” she yelled, jumping up and down like a small Steefling, giddy with excitement. Bailey’s half grin grew wider, she glanced back at Chiron who was looking at her uncertainly. Bailey shrugged and put up her hands.

“I give up. She’s all yours.” The human looked at him, suddenly serious, “You look after her, or else…” she faded off threateningly as just then Loki, who’d climbed down the ridge, pounced on Chiron and hugged him tight. Chiron embraced Loki and looked at Bailey.

“I promise.” He said. Bailey nodded and bowed slightly.

She took a step back and then suddenly wavered, stumbling down onto one knee, hands clasping her head. The Rage was fading and the demon that took Bailey over when the Rage took hold was letting go and leaving. Bailey was returning and the confusion of the blank memory of until a few minutes ago and disorientation made her dizzy. She squeezed her eyes shut and then opened them, blinking and shaking her head slightly to be rid of the strange sensation.

It was then, while she was most vulnerable, that she heard a faint cry of warning, and then a roaring bellow, the ground began shaking. Bailey opened her eyes and shot to her feet, spinning around. Chiron pushed Loki behind him protectively.

Humiliated by his wounded pride, Karnan was charging, head lowered. Bailey was frozen in place, she couldn’t move, her eyes just went very wide. Just as she was resigning herself to be trampled into the dirt, she heard another roar and an almighty thud. Bailey gulped. Karnan came closer, and closer.

“This is it, this is the end.” Came a voice in Bailey’s mind, but then a great, furry mass was between her and Karnan, a pale, furry mass, complete with huge horns. Bailey’s limbs unlocked and she scrambled away just as Karnan rammed, straight into…

Stranger.

There was a crash as the two set of Steef horns connected, Stranger shoved Karnan away and then he reared, lashing out with his forefeet. Karnan backed away and Stranger heaved great breaths from his nose, his hooves stamping and head scything the air. Bailey just sat, stunned, staring wide-eyed as once again, she saw Stranger become a fierce, merciless, almost cruel monster. Great and terrible and just plain terrifying.

Stranger glared at the smaller Steef. His breathing calmed and he pointed a finger at Karnan’s face.

“Yer even think of touchin’ her again-” he suddenly grabbed Karnan’s throat and hoisted him up to his eye-level, “An’ I’ll do ter you what I did ter Sekto when he hurt my baby.” Karnan’s eyes bulged, as several of the Steef watching uttered gasps.

“Y-Y-You,” he stuttered, “You killed S-S-Sekto.” Stranger put on a mocking curious look and cocked his head like a raptor.

“Oh? Yer didn’t know?” Stranger’s features and voice hardened and he snarled, loud enough for everyone to hear. “I threw ‘im off his own dam, because he dared ter hurt my Bailey.” Karnan choked and Stranger dropped him disgustedly and turned his back. He went up to Bailey, she was sitting in the dirt and she stared up at his, eyes as wide as saucers. “You okay kid?” Stranger asked quietly.

Bailey squeaked in reply.

Stranger chuckled and leaned down as if to pick her up, but checked himself and offered a hand. Bailey took it and was hauled to her feet. Stranger lifted the human up and set her on his shoulders. Bailey clung to his horns as suddenly a wave of noise swept over them. The Steef were whooping and stamping the earth, bellowing in recognition of Bailey’s victory.

She was one of them now.

And then, before she could comprehend what was happening, she’d been dragged down from Stranger’s shoulders and Haigar was squeezing her tight in a bone-crushing hug.

“You did it.” he whispered, almost not believing it, “You did it!” Bailey laughed as Haigar gave her back her hat and bandana and she put them on again,

“You ever thought I wouldn’t!?” she yelled over the noise. And then Daimen and Alika were there as well and Loki and Chiron, and Chiron’s father, Ixion, leader of the tribe and her family was crushing her senseless. Finally she was rescued by Stranger. She put her arms around his furry neck and leaned her forehead on his jaw, “There yer go, savin’ my hide again.” She muttered so only he could hear. Stranger chuckled and hugged his whelp.

“S’what Dads are for.” he murmured. Bailey nuzzled Stranger’s jaw with her cheek and smiled.

“I love you Dad.” She murmured. Stranger grinned and cuddled Bailey while the Steef around them celebrated and congratulated Loki and Chiron.

“I love yer too squirt.” He answered. Bailey suddenly picked her head up and looked at him,

“I thought you’d told ‘em…yer know, about Sekto…” Stranger chuckled.

“I select few mebbe, but not many.”

“Ah…”

After a moment Stranger put Bailey down and the human wiggled her way through the crush of Steef until she was next to Loki and Chiron, she grinned at Chiron. “You sneaky Steef you.” She grinned. Chiron blushed and Loki smiled, her arms around Chiron’s stomach. Bailey’s grin grew wider, “Well if you two ain’t the darnedest, cutest pair I ever did see.”

“Thank you Bailey.” Chiron said softly after a moment. He kissed Loki’s cheek and Loki smiled giddily. Bailey tugged her hat brim.

“No problem.” She suddenly blinked, closing her eyes and shaking her head. A shrill buzzing whine filled her ears, it got louder, and louder… and then, blackness.

Bailey collapsed.

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

Bonding
Haigar and Bailey do some bonding…aww
Bailey came round to several Steef faces leaning over her, looking seriously concerned. They backed off slightly as she sat up slowly.

“What happened?” she moaned as a headache pounded behind her eyes. No one answered, after a moment Bailey felt herself being picked up and she leaned on a warm, furry chest. She knew who it was without even looking. “Stranger?”

“Not now.” Murmured the Steef, “Wait until we’re inside.” Bailey nodded and kept her eyes closed, holding onto a handful of thick, warm fur. After a while the light leaking under Bailey’s lids dimmed and she no longer felt the warmth of the sun of her face. She cracked open her eyes as she was lowered onto her own cot. Stranger had a hand on each of her shoulders and he peered worriedly into her face. “What was that?” he asked finally.

“What was what?” Bailey asked perplexed. Stranger sighed,

“I’m not kidding around squirt, what you did back there was incredibly stupid… Why did you do that?” his voice sounded so worried and vaguely upset. Bailey looked down. A crooked finger nudged her chin up, “Hey, hey.” Stranger crooned, “It’s ok, I’m not angry. This is me yer talkin’ too.”

“I couldn’t let him take Loki.” Bailey said, “I just couldn’t Stranger. I’m sorry.” She whimpered, Stranger looked surprised,

“Whadda yer sorry for kid?” he asked, he pulled Bailey into a hug, “It was reckless what yer did, but I’m still proud of yer.” He grinned when Bailey glanced up at him. “Yer a young human an’ yer beat a full grown Steef, not many can say tha’.” Bailey made a ‘hrm’ sound and cast her eyes down in thought, Stranger looked down to see a frowning expression on her face. “Somat wrong kid?”

“What happened? I mean, I remember fighting ‘im, and I remember when he…” she paused and her fists clenched, “When he said what he was gunna do ter Loki…but then it all goes blank.” Stranger’s expression became worried again and he swept back Bailey’s hair, feeling her forehead. It wasn’t feverish.

“Well,” he said at last, “You fought ‘im fer a bit and then you just stopped, an’ whatever Karnan did, yer didn’t move an inch, and then you began pushing him back, yer beat ‘im and then you shouted out if any one else wanted to fight yer, an’-”

“And Chiron did.” Bailey finished, “I remember that bit, Karnan attacked me didn’t he.” Stranger nodded. There was a pause, “I must ‘ave got real angry…” Bailey muttered to herself.

“Eh?” Stranger asked, frowning. Bailey nibbled her lip, as if she’d said too much, but then she sighed and explained,

“Sometimes…when I get really angry…something happens, I dunno what it is, but then I blank out, an’ when I come back again, it’s like wakin’ up, I dunno what I’ve done while I was in a rage…but I tend to get violent…it’s only happened two or three times, but each time I ‘wake up’ an’ whoever I’m with looks terrified…because of what I’ve done…” Stranger was quiet. “I don’t like what I become Stranger,” Bailey whispered, “It scares me…” Stranger cuddled the little human closer.

“Whatever yer did, yer saved Loki,” he looked down at his kid and smiled reassuringly, “An’ that can’t be a bad thing.” Bailey looked comforted and rubbed her cheek in Stranger’s fur.

“Thanks Dad.” She muttered, Stranger practically glowed,

“Yer welcome.”

Bailey wanted to go back outside after a while, but Stranger wouldn’t hear of it.

“Yer ain’t goin’ anywhere until yer’ve recovered. You ain’t eaten or had a proper kip fer ages.” Of course Bailey whinged and moaned but Stranger wouldn’t budge and eventually Bailey gave in, she ate some warm, porridgey stuff and went off for a nap.

Stranger looked in on her later and found the human fast asleep, breathing gently and calmly, no nightmares, and no other worries on her mind. Stranger grinned to himself and left Bailey to sleep in peace. He found Haigar waiting for him, looking awkward and uncomfortable, in the main room. Stranger crossed his arms.

“Howdy Haigar.” He said sternly.

“Hullo Uncle Stranger…” Haigar murmured, he stared at the ground. It had taken him this long just to screw up enough courage to face Stranger at all, and now that courage was quickly leaking away, but he was so worried about Bailey, he had to know if she was going to be alright. He felt sick, deep in his stomach, thinking about what could have happened. Stranger’s expression softened slightly as the young Steef male before him stared at the floor, miserably scuffing one fore hoof on the floor.

“Yer here ter see Bailey?” he asked softly, Haigar glanced up but then looked down just as quickly. He nodded, still shamed face. Stranger softened further. Suddenly his nephew looked up at him and held the eye contact.

“Is she alright?” he asked. Stranger looked Haigar right in the face, he was surprised when he saw that his nephew’s pale blue eyes were glazed with moisture. The older Steef clasped the younger one’s shoulder.

“She will be.” he said gently,

“Can I see her… Please?” Haigar was just short of begging and though Stranger took pity on the young Steef, he wanted some answers first.

“Why Haigar? Why let her fight? Did you…put her up to it?” Stranger asked slowly, Haigar’s eyes widened in horrified shock,

“What!? No! I tried to talk her out of it.” Stranger saw only honest innocence in his nephew’s eyes. He tilted his head, crossing his arms, giving silent permission for Haigar to go on. Haigar sighed and swallowed. “She…was set on not just giving up, letting Karnan have Loki, she couldn’t just give in, or let it go. She wouldn’t go down without a fight… She asked me to help her to learn how to fight…” Stranger’s eyes glowed luminous green in the dim light, “I tried to make her see sense, but she refused to back down, it was either I taught her what I knew, prepare her…or…she went in alone…with nothing.” Haigar locked his clear eyes on Stranger’s. “I couldn’t just let her go in alone.” There was a pause, “I’d do it again Stranger.” He said.

Stranger regarded the young Steef intently, as if sizing him up, then;

“She’s kippin’, but you can see ‘er. Don’t wake ‘er up though.” He added firmly, Haigar sagged in relief and let out a sigh, his taut back muscles and his expression relaxed. He looked so relieved, Stranger smiled, his head tilted, a look of sudden, and not exactly unpleasant, comprehension on his face. “You really care about her, don’cha?” he said after a moment of silence. Haigar smiled wanly and nodded.

“Yah,” he said thickly, “Yah, I do.” Stranger patted his shoulder,

“Go on.” Haigar smiled and slipped past Stranger, and quietly entered the small room beyond. Bailey was asleep, just as Stranger had said, Haigar smiled fondly. She looked so innocent while she was asleep. Careful to not make a noise to wake her up, Haigar approached the bed and knelt beside it. Bailey looked okay, though she had dark, exhausted circles under her eyes and she looked strained and gaunt and worn.

“Oh Bailey,” Haigar sighed, “Why did I let you talk me into it? You saved Loki, but what if you hadn’t been able to beat him?” the young, dark Steef put an arm around her sleeping form and brushed a stray bang from Bailey’s face. The young human stirred and her eyes opened slowly, she smiled tiredly.

“Hey, blue.” Haigar returned the smile,

“Hey.” He replied quietly, “I just…wanted to make sure you were alright.” Haigar blushed and Bailey laughed quietly and grinned, touched that Haigar had been so worried, she reached her arms around his chest and hugged him.

“I didn’t know you cared so much.” She teased. Haigar chuckled and returned the cuddle,

“Course I care, you’re my best friend Bay.” Bailey grinned into his fur, only Haigar called her ‘Bay’, and she had to admit, that she liked it. “Just promise one thing,” Haigar added, leaning back slightly so he could see Bailey’s eyes. Bailey tilted her head a fraction in curiosity,

“What?”

“Don’t do anything like that again.” Bailey wrinkled her nose in a grin.

“Oh I dunno, it was kinda fun.” Haigar rolled his eyes and ground his knuckles gently in her hair.

“Rotten little human.” He muttered, but he was still smiling, Bailey suddenly yawned and blinked drowsily. Haigar brushed the hair from her face, behind her ears, “You need your sleep Bay.” Bailey nodded, letting him go and curled in her cot.

“Hrm, night Haigar.” The young Steef watched her drift off, he smiled gently,

“It’s afternoon.” He grinned, then he rose quietly, leaving her to sleep.

“Blue?” Haigar turned at the sound of her question,

“Yes?” Bailey was watching him closely, as if trying to see something hidden,

“Why have you been so depressed lately?” Haigar sighed and approached the bed again. Bailey, looking a bit more awake, propped herself on one elbow, she moved over a bit and patted the mattress, Haigar, understanding, crawled onto the bed next to her and lay on his stomach, chin resting on folded arms,

“You noticed then?” Bailey nodded. Haigar made a ‘hrm’ sound deep in his chest, he suddenly looked very embarrassed as he flushed even darker under his fur, “I shouldn’t be talkin’ to you about this…” he said after a moment, Bailey’s brow furrowed,

“Why not?”

“It’s…kinda embarrassin’.” Haigar muttered.

“Oh, a-see…well, go on then, spit it out, what’cha think I’m gonna do? Laugh?” Haigar’s gaze was firmly riveted on the blanket, but he nodded slightly. “Ah c’mon blue, I wouldn’t laugh… Promise.” She added, rubbing his shoulder. Haigar glanced at her.

“Promise?” Bailey nodded,

“Yeh, I promise.”

“I’m…kinda havin’ some problems…girl…problems…”

“Oh.” Haigar looked up quickly, Bailey’s expression looked surprised, but there was no amusement.

“You’re surprised?”

“Yeh actually, how on earth d’you have girl problems, I mean really?” Haigar raised an eyebrow,

“And you say that why?” he asked, looking mildly amused, Bailey grinned and sat up, tugging his ear gently,

“Well I think yer a cute studmuffin.” Haigar broke into a smile, and then laughed.

“Thanks Bailey.” His eyes suddenly became miserable again, “At least someone does…” Bailey sighed and began rubbing the base of his ear and the back of his neck. It had the same effect on Haigar as neck-scratching did on Stranger.

“You gotta stop wallowing in self-pity fer a start.” She muttered, Haigar eyes drooped until they were half-closed and he moved his head onto Bailey’s lap where she could scratch better. “You gotta get out there.” Bailey continued, “I bet there’s a girl for you, you just got ter find her.”

“Hrm,” murmured Haigar, “Great plan, but it’s got a flaw.”

“Which would be?”

“Girls – Steef I mean – always tend to go for the big guys that fight all the time.”

“Oh, and what? They don’t give you a chance just because you’re not a bully?” Bailey said, Haigar made a sound that clearly meant ‘You got it.’ “That’s silly.” Bailey muttered, she grinned, knowing what might cheer her friend up. “Hey, I was once told the quiet ones make better lovers.” She said conversationally. Haigar picked his head up abruptly and gaped at her, Bailey chuckled at his expression and shrugged one shoulder, “What?”

“And there’s me thinking you were all innocent.” Haigar stuttered out in astonishment,

“Hey, innocence and ignorance are two separate things,” said Bailey, “I’m innocent, not ignorant. And close your mouth,” she pressed his bottom jaw up with a finger, “You’ll swallow a fly.” There was a pause as Haigar slowly lowered his head to Bailey’s lap again and she rubbed his ears again, “Hey, don’t worry, I’ll help yer find someone.” She reassured. She yawned and ruffled her hair, “But I’ll need to sleep first, scooch over.” Haigar obediently wiggled over a bit so that Bailey could snuggle down in the covers. But instead of using the pillows she fidgeted around with the blankets for a moment before resting her head on Haigar’s stomach, just lower then his forelegs. “I would say ‘Night’, but as been as it’s afternoon I can’t…” she muttered to herself.

Haigar blinked in surprise as Bailey curled up next to him, but he couldn’t say he didn’t find it pleasant, so instead of leaving, he lay down and watched her close her eyes and drift off. He moved to kiss her on the forehead but changed his mind and kissed her cheek instead,

“Thanks Bay.” He whispered before he closed his eyes and similarly went into a doze.

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

Haigar’s Girl Problems
Bailey helps Haigar with the ladies…or tries to at least
When Haigar didn’t come out of Bailey’s room after over an hour, Stranger went to see what on earth he was up too. What he found made him smile, Haigar was sprawled on his stomach on the bed and Bailey was lounging on him and they were both snoring.

“And she says I’m bad…” he thought amusedly. He moved over to the bed and for a moment quietly watched his kid and nephew sleep. Bailey had her face buried in Haigar’s fur and looked peaceful but Haigar was frowning as he slept. He seemed to sense someone watching as he suddenly opened one blue eye. He opened his mouth to speak but Stranger stopped him from saying anything. “Yer jist sleep.” he said quietly, he smiled again and left. Haigar watched him go with a look of mild confusion but then laid head down and went to sleep again.

¤§¤

Bailey woke up later, and for a moment thought that it was Stranger she was curled up too, another moment later she realised that this Steef couldn’t possibly be Stranger, his (she seemed to know instinctively it was a ‘he’) smell was different, but familiar as well. And Stranger was leaner, smaller. Bailey yawned and opened her eyes. Dark fur tickled her nose and she grinned as she recognised who it was. She sat up;

“Hey, blue. Wake up.” Haigar didn’t even stir, Bailey nudged him, “C’mon yer big ol’ Steef, nap time over.” Still he didn’t wake up, but this time he moaned and wiggled abit as she prodded him again. Apparently he was ticklish on his ribs. Bailey grinned and tickled him again, Haigar squirmed but he smiled, and he didn’t wake up. “Alright Steef,” Bailey muttered, “Time to bring out the big guns.” She began tickling his stomach, between his forelegs and hindlegs, Haigar’s leg muscles flexed as she rubbed his stomach. “C’mon blue, don’t make me tickle to silly.” Haigar made a strange bleating sound and rolled over. “Oh no you don’t studmuffin.” Snickered Bailey, she began tickling his ribs. Haigar bleated again.

“Um, stoppit.” He muttered.

“Nuh uh. Wakey wakey sleepy head.” Finally Haigar’s blue eyes cracked open. Bailey tugged his ear gently. “Hey, hey.” She grinned, “Mornin’ munchkin.” Haigar smiled crookedly before yawning hugely, showing his sharp Steef fangs. Then he shook his head and rubbed his bed-hair.

“Mornin’ ter you too…have I been here all night?” Bailey stopped and frowned slightly,

“Yer know, I dunno what time it is.” She scrambled out of bed, still in pale shirt and baggy pants she slept in and pulled on her boots. “Let’s go find out.” She grinned. Haigar moaned and flopped back onto the bed,

“Aw, it’s too early Bay. And Uncle Stranger doesn’t want’cha goin’ out jist yet.”

“Stop ya whingin’, c’mon blue. Come out with me.” Bailey bounced on the bed and tugged on the Steef’s tail.

“Hey!” Haigar yelped, “That’s attached yer know!” Bailey tugged again, then moved onto his hindleg, tickling the underside of his hoof. Haigar jerked his foot away and scowled at Bailey. Bailey stuck out her lower lip and widened her eyes. Haigar looked away, he couldn’t stand when Bailey did that. “Don’t give me that look Bay, please don’t.” To his surprise Bailey didn’t press, instead she came and sat back on the bed, looking miserable. “Listen, Bailey…Stranger just wants you to get better…I…want you to get better.”

“I won’t get any better if I’m cooped up in ‘ere.” She mumbled. Haigar sighed, and put his arms around the small human, drawing her into a hug, guiding her head to his shoulder.

“Look, Bay, darlin’, I’m sorry.” He murmured, “I just…” he made an irritated sound of frustration, “I know stayin’ in here ain’t gonna help.” He sighed eventually. Bailey pressed her forehead to Haigar’s chest. The young Steef suddenly realised that Bailey was shaking, and a warm wetness had begun in his fur. “Bay?” he whispered in surprise, “Bay, what’s wrong?”

“I…don’t,” she gulped, “Don’t, like…being shut in…Sekto…shut me in…” Bailey shivered, Haigar’s eyes opened wide in shock. Though Stranger had told his family about Sekto, he had not told them what Sekto had done to Bailey, because she had never spoken about it. But now Bailey was clinging to Haigar, sobbing gently and shivering, clutching his fur.

“Hey, hey, it’s ok, it’s ok.” Haigar tried his best to sooth the human, held her in his arms and rubbed her back, murmuring quietly. After a while, when Bailey seemed calmer Haigar went quiet, then; “Have you…told Stranger?” Bailey shook her head.

“No.” she whimpered.

“Why? He loves you, he wouldn’t be upset, or angry…”

“I dunno, I-I just couldn’t.” Bailey murmured. She swallowed. “Please don’t tell ‘em blue.”

“I won’t if you don’t want me too.” Bailey sniffled and wiped her eyes.

“Thanks.”

“Tell you what, I’ll talk to Uncle Stranger, maybe he’ll let you outside if I promise to keep an eye on you.” Haigar suggested, Bailey looked at him in surprise.

“You’d do that?” Haigar grinned,

“Course I would,” he ruffled Bailey’s hair, “You’re my baby cousin…well kind of anyway…” Bailey laughed quietly,

“Yeh, proxy like.”

“Exactly. Ok, I’ll go now. Stay here.” Bailey nodded and Haigar took his arms from around her, carefully standing up. “Be right back.” He grinned, leaning down he kissed her cheek softly, then left the room, Bailey sat, cross-legged on the bed, fingers crossed as she hoped Stranger would agree.

It wasn’t long after that Haigar came back, Stranger following with an unconvinced look on his face. He glanced at Haigar and then at Bailey’s hopeful expression. He sighed, and a defeated smile crept over his features.

“Ok, ok. I give up. You win.” He looked pointedly at Bailey, “Behave yerself lil’ missie, and you;” he turned to Haigar, “You look after ‘er.” Haigar nodded. Bailey yelled in joy and jumped off the bed, flinging her arms around Stranger’s middle. Stranger grinned delightedly, “Hey, hey, easy now kid.” But he returned the hug anyway. “Right, you gotta get changed if yer gonna go anywhere.” Bailey let Stranger go and nodded enthusiastically. She shooed the two Steef out and they, laughing, complied and left.

It didn’t take long for Bailey to appear outside the hut, dressed and ready to go, where Haigar and Stranger were waiting for her. Bailey grinned as she practically bounced over to Haigar.

“C’mon, c’mon, let’s go, let’s go!” she grabbed his hand and Stranger chuckled at the bemused expression on Haigar’s face as he was dragged away by an overly exuberant thirteen-year-old.

A few minutes later Bailey and Haigar walked side by side, Bailey with her arms wrapped around Haigar’s, resting her head gently just below his shoulder. Haigar looked down at her, her eyes were closed and she had a smile of her face.

“Trust me enough to guide you blind?” Haigar teased,

“Hrm, yes, I feel safe here. I know you’ll protect me.” A chuckle rumbled around Haigar’s chest.

“You don’t need protecting Bay…” he murmured fondly,

“Yeh I do, sometimes.” There was a pleasant silence and then,

“Hun? Are you…humming?” Bailey’s eyes remained closed but her smile widened,

“Yus.”

“Whadda yer hummin’?”

“Something that reminds me of you.”

“Of me?” Haigar asked in surprise, Bailey nodded,

“It’s about a lass, she had a boyfriend that she loved more then anything, but her friends disapproved, because they thought he wasn’t good enough for her. So she dumped him and carried on with life, a couple of years later, she’s alone with a baby. Then one day she sees her old boyfriend. He’s, well, she realises how special he was and how stupid she was to let him go.”

“And that reminds you of me? Should I be insulted or flattered?” Haigar teased, Bailey laughed,

“It reminds me of you, because you a such a special person, and not one of those female Steef see it. Just because you don’t fight…but one of these days, they’ll realise that they missed out on something, extraordinary.” Haigar stopped walking, Bailey did the same and opened her eyes. Haigar was crouched in front of her, his four Steef legs curled beneath him, even so he was at eyelevel with the human. He laid a hand on each of her shoulders and looked her straight in the eye. Blue locked on hazel. His expression was one of many emotions swirled together.

“You, really believe that?” Haigar whispered, voice in awe. Bailey grinned crookedly, she laid her palms on Haigar’s warm, dark cheeks and looked at him intently.

“Yes.” She bent his head and kissed his brow. Haigar suddenly pressed his head to Bailey’s neck and wrapped his arms around her waist. Bailey, though a little surprised, smiled gently and put her arms around his neck, resting her cheek on the top of his head, between his horns. “You know I love you, don’t you blue?” she asked. “Loved you since you became my friend. You’re my family.” Haigar nuzzled into her neck and nodded.

“I love you too Bay.” He mumbled. “Thanks…” He drew away and looked at her, eyes glowing as he smiled. Bailey raised an eyebrow,

“An’ you’re tellin’ me, with that smile, you ain’t got them fainting at yer feet?”

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

Good grief, the title’s one great pun…

‘Bird’ Watching
Bailey lay on her stomach on the grass in one of the wide-open meadows of the Steef summer valley. To an onlooker the human looked like she was just relaxing and enjoying the sun. Odd knew, she needed it after that tangle with Karnan… But to anyone who knew her, it was blatantly obvious that Bailey was not relaxing, but watching a group of female Steef a little way away, giggling and splashing about it a small pool created where the stream that ran through the valley, had hit a dip and widened.

A little way away, another group of younger Steef – these male – were obviously showing off, to the giggling females.

It was all one big game of flirt.

“No wonder blue ain’t interested…” Haigar just wasn’t the flirting type, he was too shy and quiet and got nervous – to the point of stammering – in the presence of pretty girls, and Bailey had seen first hand how the other males his age unmercifully teased him about it. But no matter how much they pushed him, tried to get him angry enough to fight, no matter how crude and offensive their insults became, Haigar would just turn and walk off.

Bailey knew that one of these days, those arrogant young Steef were going to push Haigar too far, and then they wouldn’t know what hit them. Haigar was bigger and stronger then most of the other Steef, but he was too gentle, he just wouldn’t fight. Bailey had also found out that Haigar didn’t have many friends, just Chiron who was also quieter then was considered ‘normal’.

Well, if being normal meant bellowing and butting heads like a mountain goat and all that macho cliché, then Bailey was very glad to have an ‘abnormal’ best friend. The human turned her head slightly, Haigar was lying close by, sprawled out on his side, his legs going everywhere. Bailey chuckled.

“Hey,” she hissed, “Blue, I need ya fer a sec.” one blue eye opened.

“Wotsmatter.” He mumbled.

“Why ain’t they scrapping?” Bailey jerked her head towards the band of male Steef.

“Coz they don’t want they horns to snap off in the middle.” Haigar muttered, eye closed again, Bailey frowned,

“But you said horns only get shed in spring.”

“They do.” Haigar opened both eyes, Bailey blinked at him, innocent curiosity on her expression. Haigar sighed and rolled over so that he was on his stomach and that he and Bailey were almost nose-to-nose. “Look,” he explained, “Steef horns get shed in spring, but when Steef males are my age, they’ve just grown a full set for the first time, the full shape.” Bailey nodded, “Right after they’ve achieved their full size, the horns drop again, and don’t re-grow fer a coupla years.”

“Why not?” Bailey asked, completely flummoxed.

“Well, once Steef horns have grown to their full size, they drop off and start growin’ again dead slowly, coz this time they’re growing in strength as well as size. You understand?” Bailey blinked and nodded uncertainly.

“Yeh…think so.”

“Good.” Haigar grinned, “Coz I ain’t in the mood to explain it again.” He closed his eyes again and rested his head on Bailey’s back. Bailey heaved a sigh and went back to watching the young Steef interact. Unfortunately it seemed Haigar had been right, the females only responded the big, tough ones.

“Ah crud.” She muttered, “Scuppered…” After a moment Bailey sighed again and shifted slightly, “C’mon blue, let’s go.” Haigar picked his head up,

“Go? Go where?” the young Steef asked, Bailey sat up,

“Yer takin’ me out.” The human grinned, “Show me around.” Haigar watched her, one eyebrow raised and then smiled.

“Alright.” Rising, the Steef took Bailey’s hand and helped her up. He smiled, eyes shining. “There’s something I want to show you.” Still holding her hand, Haigar led the human into the trees of the valley’s forest.

“So, where’re goin’ blue?” Bailey asked cheerfully, Haigar grinned;

“You’ll see.” the young Steef said enigmatically. “But it’ll be easier,” he added, picking up the human around the waist, “If you ride.” And placed Bailey gently onto his back. She put her arms around his middle and leaned her head against his shoulder, smiling to herself as she felt comforted and protected. Haigar’s gait was so smooth and the regular rhythm of his breathing and heartbeat so soothing that Bailey’s eyes were soon drooping, snuggling up to Haigar she drifted off into a doze.

Haigar felt Bailey relax and her breathing go deep and easy with sleep and couldn’t help break into a smile of his own as he continued walking. After a few minutes Haigar stopped in mid-stride, one hoof raised, his ears twitching. There was suddenly a brittle snap, like a twig breaking.

“Alright, I know you’re there.” He called, “C’mon out.” There was a rustle and a few more twigs broke as another young Steef pushed out of the bushes. “Chiron?” Haigar asked in surprise, “Why’re you followin’ me?”

“Hullo Haigar…” the blonde Steef murmured, expression shame-faced, he looked awkwardly down at his forehooves. There was a pause, “Loki…asked me to talk to you…” he finally explained, scuffing one front hoof in the dirt of the forest track. “She, worries, about you.” Haigar drew his eyebrows together. Chiron fidgeted and even blushed faintly with embarrassment. “She thinks you…need someone…to look after you…”

“Hrm…” Haigar made a rumbling sound deep in his chest, “My dear baby sister has her love life all sorted and now she feels the need to sort out mine…” he said wryly. “Tell her thanks, but I can sort it out myself.” Chiron chuckled, but his smile faded when he noticed Bailey, asleep on Haigar’s back.

“You know…” he ventured uncertainly, “That won’t help…” Haigar glanced over his shoulder then snapped his gaze sharply back to Chiron, fixing him with stern blue eyes.

“What d’you mean Chiron?” He asked quietly.

“Haigar, you know we all care about Bailey…but your closeness to her…” Chiron hesitated, then ploughed on, “It doesn’t help you when you’re trying to find a mate…”

“What in Odd’s name are you talkin’ about!?” Haigar demanded, thoroughly confused and mildly irritated. Chiron sighed,

“What d’you think it looks like?” he asked, “When you spend so much time with Bailey? Most of it out in the wilds…people are starting to talk Haigar…” Haigar’s eyes widened for a moment,

“You mean that they think-” he began, “Me and Bailey?” Chiron nodded, looking miserable, “That’s ridiculous, she’s my cousin!” Haigar exclaimed,

“Not by blood Haigar, she’s only your cousin because Stranger is your uncle.”

“But, what- how-?” Haigar stammered to say something but the revelation was just too ludicrous. “What are they saying Chiron.” He finally said, voice growling.

“Some…are abit…shocked…” Chiron said uncomfortably, “But on the whole…the elders especially…they’re…well to be honest, they’re rather happy about it…something about ‘humans causing us pain in the past but healing the wounds of the future’. They say it would be good and right for one of us to Choose a human…” Haigar gaped at his friend. “I…I’ll be going then...” Chiron said quickly and left in the same way, leaving a very bemused Haigar behind.

“C’mon, c’mon, let’s go, let’s go!” she grabbed his hand and Stranger chuckled at the bemused expression on Haigar’s face as he was dragged away by an overly exuberant thirteen-year-old.

Aww...the baby' so cute, DS...:coos s'more:
Yeah. Stranger was angry. But he was gonna cry.
YOu see his eye twitch sadly?
Then regained to his esteem?
He didn't want to cry around a large group of rebels. He'd figure it'd make a fool out'a 'im.

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

And after fighting with a serious case of writer’s block, HERE’S ANOTHER CHAPTER! YAY! You may all begin celebrating my return now.

…Or not.

The Butterflies
Haigar stared after the blonde Steef, long after he’d disappeared. Remaining in the exact same place, as if froze by Chiron’s shocking revelation. The dark Steef looked over his shoulder again, glancing at the still sleeping human with a confused expression in his eyes.

Was that what some of the older Steef thought? That he and Bailey… Haigar shook his head, his ears flicking agitatedly as if dislodging a fly. It was completely insane. He cared about her of course, as much as his uncle Stranger, sometimes, he thought somewhat guiltily, almost as much as he would have guessed he would care for a mate… Haigar shook his head again. He shifted his weight uncomfortably and glanced back at Bailey again. Well there was no point in taking her to see anything now.

“Maybe it would be best if I just took her home…” Haigar nodded to himself, he would take her home, she obviously hadn’t rested enough. The dark Steef turned carefully and made his way through the forest, towards home, Chiron’s hesitant voice running through his mind, regardless of how much he tried to silence it.

¤§¤

Bailey woke in her own bed, sometime later, and found herself alone. Feeling vaguely hurt by this, the young human swung her legs down from the bed and hopped to the floor. Trotting out of her bedroom she found that the rest of the hut was empty as well, she peered into Stranger’s room to find that deserted also. Bailey rubbed her hair in frustration.

“Where is everyone?” she muttered rhetorically to herself. She shook her head and gave a half-shrug before going outside. There, finally, she found someone. Haigar was sitting a little way away, Bailey was about to go and pounce on him, when she noticed his expression. The young Steef looked utterly miserable… Bailey edged towards him, “Blue?” she ventured, Haigar jerked and looked around quickly. Bailey flinched and took a small step backward. The look of horror on Haigar’s face hit her like a physical blow. “Blue?” she managed to repeat after a pause, “What’s wrong?”

Haigar still stared at her, that horrified – and, was that guilt on his face? – still on his expression. He scrambled to his feet.

“Bailey…” Bailey drew her eyebrows together, she’d never heard Haigar use that tone of voice before, he sounded like he wanted to tell her something, but at the same time didn’t. “I’m fine Bailey.” He said after a moment, his voice seeming more normal, “I just…” he faded off and turned away as if to leave. “Nothing,” he sighed at last, “It’s nothing.”

Confused by his odd behaviour, Bailey edged closer and laid a hand on Haigar’s forearm comfortingly, unafraid of the powerful muscle that could easily crush her skull. She paused a moment, then slipped her hand into his. The Steef hesitated then curled his fingers around her hand.

“It’s obviously not nothing.” Bailey said quietly. “I thought we could talk about stuff like this…why won’t you tell me what’s bothering you?” Haigar refused to meet her gaze, averting his blue eyes, but he squeezed her hand gently. Bailey frowned. This wasn’t like the Haigar she knew. Something was up. But Bailey knew that Haigar wasn’t going to tell her, whatever it was. She didn’t press, if and when the dark Steef youth was prepared to say what was on his mind, then he would, and not before. Bailey let out a sigh, released his hand and slid her arms around Haigar’s middle, resting her head on his ribs, rubbing her cheek against the soft fur.

Haigar glanced down at the human, feeling confused again. He viciously cursed Chiron in the silence of his mind. This was all his fault, why couldn’t the blonde Steef have just left him unknowing? Instead of telling him the tribe’s gossip? His friendship with Bailey was suffering, and he felt confusion well up in his chest every time he thought about what Chiron had said…

As Haigar looked down at Bailey again, her arms wrapped around him, he let out a breath through his nose. The young Steef stroked the human’s hair quietly, mimicking what Stranger normally did. The green beads on her singular braid caught his attention and he rolled the wooden globes gently between his fingers. No matter what any of them said, Bailey was an honorary Steef, even if she wasn’t one by blood. The Grubbs had seen to that… Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if- He shook himself, disgusted. Now was not the time, besides, Stranger would flip his lid if he knew. Haigar felt his stomach plunge, what if Stranger already knew!? Did that mean that only Bailey was ignorant?

“Bay?” Haigar spoke on impulse, not even realising what he was going to do until the word left his mouth. Bailey looked up at him, meeting his eyes squarely.

“Yes?”

“I-”

“Oh, there you are!” exclaimed a voice happily. Both Bailey and Haigar jumped and looked around to see Loki coming towards them. Bailey felt all the muscles in Haigar’s stomach tense and wondered what on earth he wasn’t telling her. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere Bailey.” The female Steef gushed, she looked at her brother, “You don’t mind if I steal Bailey for a while do you?” before waiting for an answer, Loki grabbed Bailey’s hand and tugged her away. “I haven’t seen you in so long Bailey!” she grinned giddily,

“Yeh, but you’ve got…other things to think about now…” Bailey murmured, not really listening, she was too busy looking over her shoulder. Haigar watched them go, his expression hopeless and sad. Bailey wished, for the first time in her life, that Loki had not picked that moment to appear. Haigar had been about to tell her something, she was sure of it…with a quiet sigh, Bailey turned her attention back to Loki, who had been chattering excitedly about Chiron. Unaware that her companion had not really being paying attention.

“But enough about me, how’re you? It’s been an age since we went out together, just you, me and Haigar, of course we’re all abit older now so naturally I wouldn’t be spending as much time with my dear brother, but you Bailey! I’ve missed our walks and talks together.” Bailey smiled slightly, it seemed Loki had suddenly matured – and become excessively giddier – since she and Chiron had started courting.

The exact wedding (or Joining as they called it) date hadn’t been set yet, much to Bailey’s surprise she found that Steef were a lot readier to commit then the average human and Loki and Chiron were going to ‘tie the knot’ (a saying which amused many of the Steef) so soon. But she wasn’t complaining, they looked happy together.

Still, she and Loki had regularly gone out on rambles together, much like they had when Loki was a Steefling, up until recently of course. ‘Recently’, had been summer maturing and Chiron and Loki had been planning to be joined (apparently Steef didn’t use the term – married) at the latter end of the season.

Preparations were starting to be made. The big hut that Loki had gotten into trouble on when the Steef had practically first arrived had been finished and had turned out to be some kind of ceremony hall, though as of yet, Bailey hadn’t been inside. And another small living hut was starting to be built, for Chiron and Loki to live in afterwards as Bailey assumed. All in all, it had all become a bit hectic…

Loki fell silent and the Steef and human walked side by side in companionable silence. They passed other Steef, some working, some relaxing, talking and laughing, the Steeflings playing in the grass in some games that Bailey knew, like Tag, and some she didn’t.

There was a moment’s more pause before Loki spoke again;

“You’re very quiet Bailey, is something wrong?” Bailey smiled slightly,

“Nah, I’m fine, just wondering where we’re goin’.” Loki laughed slightly,

“I dunno,” she said mimicking Bailey’s words and accent from her younger days, “But we’ll know when we get there.” Bailey joined her laughter,

“Aye, I’m sure we will, but a basic direction would be nice, even if the destination isn’t.” she said wryly. Loki smiled, hit by a sudden inspiration,

“I know! Mum once told me about a meadow, above the Steef valley, she said Dad used to take her there when they were young.” Loki giggled. Bailey nodded,

“Let’s head for that then.”

¤§¤

It took them some time, but finally Loki and Bailey reached the meadow, the bright green grass was thick and lush and rippled in the breeze like waves far out on a green sea. Bailey laughed when she saw it and spread her arms wide, revolving slowly, eyes closed, face uplifted, taking in a deep breath of air. Savouring the cool, clean quiet.

“This is brilliant.” She grinned as she came to a standstill. Loki returned the smile as she watched the twinkle in Bailey’s brightly shining eyes. After a while the young Steef and human set off again, walking easily across the meadow, taking their time, talking about nothing in particular. Eventually they came to a place where the meadow sloped down and a forest, tangled and overgrown, stood temptingly, tugging at Bailey’s adventurous nature. She stood silently, gazing at it. “How’s about it Loki?” she murmured, “Up fer an adventure?” the young Steef hesitated, then nodded, Bailey’s eyes gleamed in excitement and she grinned wildly.

The two females approached the forest, pausing at it’s fringe, before plunging into the murky twilight between the trees. They walked carefully, being as quiet as they could and cautiously watchful. After a time Loki’s sharp Steef eyes glimpsed a slight glow of sunlight up ahead.

“Bailey…” she said uncertainly and stopped walking, Bailey paused and looked back at Loki, the young Steef was wringing her hands together worriedly. Bailey glanced from Loki, towards the light and back.

“I don’t think we have anything to worry about…” she said after a moment. Loki still seemed uncertain and hesitant but Bailey would not be deterred, “Look, I’ll go first an’ holler back, a’righ’?” after a pause, Loki nodded. Bailey, remaining cautious, quietly left the Steef and moved towards the glow of sunlight slanting thickly through the trees, dust motes dancing in the beam of gold.

Pushing her way through the branches that slapped at her face and arms, Bailey came out into the open. For a moment the sun dazzled her dilated pupils and Bailey rubbed her eyes harshly, but when she was accustomed to the light and she looked around again, a smile broke out on her face as she was greeted by a fluttering riot of colour.

“Holy crap…” she breathed in awe, then; “Loki! C’mere!” she heard the sound of the knee-height ferns growing from the forest floor being crushed just as Loki peered through the trees and followed Bailey outside. “Would’ja look at this!” Bailey said as the Steef, her mouth open, came to stand beside her.

It was another meadow, more secluded with an even wilder carpet of grass then the previous one, it was laid thick with vividly coloured flowers that swayed easily up to Bailey’s knees. But it wasn’t the splashes of colour of the fauna that made Loki’s jaw drop and Bailey grin.

The place was heaving with butterflies, swarms of them. The insects were huge, bigger then any Bailey had ever seen, each pair of the segmented wings were as wide as her hand-span and just under a foot long. Their bodies were black like pitch and covered in velvetine fur. Their glittering, jewel-bright colours made joy and wonder blossom in Bailey chest and she felt so much younger.

For a moment, both human and Steef stood side by side and just watched the dancing butterflies, then the human gave a yell and began to run, skipping across the grass and through the flowers, the butterflies twirled around her and laughing, the Steef followed Bailey’s example. They romped for an age, the rainbow of butterfly wings creating a dream-like atmosphere, making the two females almost drunk with giddiness.

Eventually they flopped onto the grass, feeling light-headed, they watched the butterflies slowly sink down and rest on the flowers, and on the two friends. Bailey chuckled as the soft feelers of one giant butterfly – sporting wings that were a myriad of different hues of blue – tickled her cheeks. Another – green and yellow – insect perched on Loki’s head, uncurling it’s long tongue down her ear for a moment before withdrawing and settling, wings open, on the Steef’s hair.

“D’you think anyone else knows about this place?” Bailey asked after a moment as she let an enormous Red Admiral-like butterfly sit on her fingers.

“I dunno.” Loki said, smelling a bright yellow flower, eyes closed as she took in it’s scent. “It’s doubtful though,” she added, “They aren’t afraid of us.”

“Hrm.” Bailey murmured and she lay back in the grass, one arm behind her head, one draped across her stomach, her fedora shading her eyes. There was a pause; Bailey noticed the awkward air that pervaded the otherwise comfortable scene. Tipping her hat so that it revealed one brown eye, she propped herself up on her elbows and glanced at the Steef, watching her twiddle a blade of grass between her fingers. “Ok, wassup Loki?” she asked.

Loki made an uncomfortable, non-committal sound and did a half shrug.

“It’s nothing really…” she muttered, twisting the blade of grass so hard in snapped. Bailey huffed;

“What is it with everyone and bein’ evasive today!” she suddenly burst out, “First blue and now you as well.” She sighed, sat up and plucked a wide blade of grass from near her knee. “Ah forget it.” She muttered, wedging the blade between her thumbs. She fiddled with it a moment more and then blew, producing a satisfyingly deep, full, vibrating sound. Loki jumped and looked at her in surprise,

“Did you hear that?” she asked,

“Hear what?” Bailey asked, confused,

“That…buzzing…”

“Oh, yew mean this?” Bailey blew the grass blade again,

“Yes that! How did you do that!?”

“It’s easy,” Bailey said, “Here.” She picked up another wide blade and pressed together the Steef’s thumbs, “Now leave a liddle gap and blow.” Loki did so. Nothing happened. “Keep tryin’.” Bailey said easily. After several attempts, Loki did indeed manage to produce a sound. It was reminiscent of a dying bluebottle. “Not so hard,” Bailey said, “Or yew’ll run of air, keep it steady.” Loki obeyed and a long note came from between her fingers.

“I did it!” the young Steef exclaimed,

“So yer did.” Bailey grinned. But the smile faded and she looked vaguely miserable again, “I wish I knew what was up with blue…” she said suddenly. Loki gave her a quick sidelong glance that Bailey didn’t notice.

“Bailey…” She said after a moment. The human looked up from the grassy carpet. “I…think, I know…what’s wrong with Haigar…” Loki ventured hesitantly. Bailey neither moved nor made a sound but Loki could instantly tell that she had the human’s undivided attention. “Haigar’s been depressed…well, he’s depressed because of you…” Bailey started,

“Me?” she asked, looking hurt, “What have I done? Why didn’t he say-”

“No, no.” Loki cut her off, “Not like that, it’s nothing you’ve done, it just…involves you…” Loki faded off miserably, as if she wasn’t explaining too well. “You care about my brother don’t you.” She finally said, it wasn’t a question but Bailey nodded mutely, unsure of the direction in which this conversation was heading… “He cares about you, a lot more then I think you realise… He loves you Bailey.” Bailey frowned in confusion,

“I know, I love ‘im too, he’s my best friend.” The human said as if it were obvious.

“You don’t…feel anything stronger?” she ventured delicately, Bailey drew her eyebrows together,

“How d’you mean?” she asked, non-plussed,

“I mean, as more then a friend.” Loki explained, comprehension dawned in Bailey’s eyes, and disbelief.

“’Scuse me?” she asked, in a low, almost deadly voice. Had it been any other Steef, they would have felt their guts tighten in fear, but Loki was not afraid, just uneasy about upsetting the human more then angering her.

“The tribe, are talking…about you and my brother…” Bailey narrowed her eyes, cold and calculating.

“And what, are they saying?” she asked in a would-be calm voice, but Loki saw the human’s fists clenching and unclenching.

“Bailey, please, I know you and my brother are close, I don’t want to spoil that, but…” Loki sighed, “Haigar’s closeness to you is ruining his chances of getting a mate.” Bailey opened and closed her mouth in shock for a moment, but then spluttered in incredulity,

What!?”

“You and Haigar are always together, and some…” she paused, “Some of the tribe are starting to think you’re more then ‘friends’, they’re saying you and Haigar…”

“What?!” Bailey said again, but her voice was tinged with humour this time, obviously she thought the suggestion was ridiculous. Loki wasn’t amused,

“I’m serious Bailey, you and Haigar go off on your little jaunts, just the two of you, disappearing into the wilds for hours…” she faded off.

“Loki,” Bailey said, as if she were a Steefling again, “Me and you’re brother, we’re close, he’s my best friend, but seriously, we’ll only ever be ‘mates’ – if that’s what yer getting’ at – in that sense, friends. We may not be blood-related, but we’re completely different species…if you ain’t noticed…” she added, with a hint of a smile. Loki didn’t return it, just watched her human companion intently.

Was Bailey imagining it, or did Loki seem…disappointed?

Bailey mentally shook it off, it was crazy, her and Haigar, of course she felt a fondness for the Steef, just as she did for Stranger, for all of her extended ‘family’, her entire tribe. But really, a human and a Steef? Together? Bailey found she didn’t feel disgusted, or that it was unnatural, just abit…odd… After all, Steef were not animals, they were sentient beings, intelligent and compassion, not mindless, or even violent…

Maybe they were superior to humans…

They weren’t separated like humans were. They didn’t hate those different from themselves. They had accepted her, even though they had been so wronged by other humans. And it seemed to Bailey, that they loved more then her own species did. She had been loved more by the Steef then her own blood at any rate…

Bailey met Loki’s questioning blue eyes.

“We’re friends.” Bailey said firmly, “Nothing more.”
