I'd always imagined them as some kind of sickly meat
French Fancie. Thick sugary icing with a core of gooey Scrab purée,* possibly with spongecake inbetween.
The idea always struck me as gross (as intended), but not totally outrageous. Back in
þe day when meat was considered a luxury, it was very common to put it in puddings, candies and the like.
