Char Aznable.
Basically, it's Universal Century 0079, and humanity has moved into space. They build a ton of space colonies, in groups called Sides. unfortunately the government of Side 3, calling itself the Principality of Zeon, breaks away from the Earth Federation's control. The leader of Zeon, an idealistic man named Zeon Deikum, fosters independence, pride in the country, all good values and shit, but he begins to slowly die. It's never revealed or not, but the family that takes control after his death, the Zabi family, basically turn the place into a crazy military dictatorship and begin a great war with the Earth's colonies and the planet itself.
Casval Rem Deikum, the young son of the original founder of Zeon, believes the Zabi family to be his father's murderers, so he hides his identity with a mask and becomes an ace Mobile Suit pilot named Char Aznable.
This brings him into conflict with the Gundam and it's pilot, a kid named Amuro Ray throughout the war. Near the beginning, Char leads the youngest son of the Zabi family, Garma, into a trap where he dies. Later on the Federation's attack on the Zeon fortress of Solomon kills the middle son, Dozle Zabi. After this, Char grows close with a woman named Lalah Sune, who posesses an ability that makes her a "Newtype", which is basically Sixth-sense and telepathy and stuff. Through this, it is revealed that both Char and his rival Amuro are also Newtypes, and as they clash in space Lalah is killed. Char takes it really badly and is driven to kill the Gundam's pilot in revenge.
Meanwhile, the Federation force meets with the head of the Zabi family, Degwin Zabi, who truely believes that the war has gone on long enough. Unfortunately, Gihren, the oldest son of the Zabi family wants to continue to fight and obliterates his own father along with the Federation leadership. However, because Gihren changed the target of his attack to kill his father, a larger portion of the rest of the Federal Forces survive and they press the attack.
Char engages Amuro is a violent scrap during the last battle of the war, outside the Space Fortress A Boa Qu. Inside, Gihren laughs as the Federation battles, but he gets shot through the head by his sister Kycelia, who had discovered about the patricide. This leaves Kycelia the last surviving member of the Zabi family.
At the end of their fight, Amuro is wounded and flees when Char can no longer keep going. Then he remembers his real purpose, and goes to finish what he started, grabbing a bazooka and shooting Kycelia in the head through the cockpit. You can sit that in the top video of this page.
Anyway, Char escaped the war and returned years later to join the Anti-Earth-Union-Group that was rebelling against the heavy-handed amoral Titans, the special forces of the Federation. He plays a supporting role in this series, even teaming up with his old rival Amuro. At the end of the war, he is missing.
However, Char returned in the movie, Char's Counterrattack, leading a new Zeon movement to drop the remains of a giant asteroid base upon Earth in order to force humanity into space. Char truly believes this will force mankind to evolve into a stronger, more peaceful form. Of course, Amuro returns in the Gundam to rain on his parade, and the power of Newtypes deflects the asteroid from Earth somehow and both pilots disappear from history, never to be seen again.
Among fans, the time when Char was with the Anti Earth Union Group is when most people liked him, as he was nicer and more relaxed, and well, on the good guys' side. Then comes the classic Masked Pilot Char from the first show, followed by his movie characterization, which some people think was a bit too "evil" for such a complex character.
Yeah.
