Portal Conspiracy
Chapter 1
Entryway
The rubbing of the tram along the rails made a screeching sound as it ran along. Inside were at least four Sligs carrying suitcases full of their private belongings. One of these Sligs was sitting down on one of the tram seats. He was wearing a black leather jacket and black trousers. He tapped his fingers nervously on the suitcase he was holding. Standing by the tram door was a soldier who held his assault rifle by his side. The Slig was nervous about this because he knew that every soldier had an itchy trigger finger. He waited anxiously for the tram to stop at the nearest station. The next stop was a station connected to outpost X16. To take the time, he looked out of the tram window next him. It was a strange environment out there. It was a mix of greenery and industrial machinery. Then there were square shaped houses crammed inside the industrial sites. Then he finally saw the station up ahead near a large factory. The tram started to slow down as it came under the station roof. The soldier in the tram kept an eye on the other passengers. Then the tram finally stopped and the automatic doors opened. The Slig stood up and followed the others out of the doors and onto the station platform.
The Slig walked towards the end of the platform only to find the others being registered by another soldier. These soldiers were strangely humanoid and always carried a slightly modified Walther SP22/M2 hand gun with a notch and post site. The others were standing in a single-file line saying their name out to the soldier while he registered them down on a note book. The queue moved slowly forward; the Slig was right at the back of it.
After a minute or so, it was the Sligs turn to register. “Name?” asked the solider inaudibly under the grey gas mask he was wearing. However, the Slig could hear it. “Rigel” the Slig replied. The soldier wrote the name down and put the pencil in his left buttoned pocket. “Move” he said in a commanding way. Rigel moved away from the soldier and walked towards a passage with a sign above it saying “D Boundary”. He recognized this as the downtown area. The passage was a set of steps leading down to a long hallway similar to that of a metro station. He walked down the steps and entered the long hallway.
The floor of the hallway was mostly paved but had a few tiles scattered along it. The walls were completely tiled with small square slabs that were white. Some had been cut off from the wall - either they were on the floor or they had been taken away. Bits of paper and rubbish littered the floor. Rigel ignored these pointless obstacles and carried on. It was strangely quiet with only the noise of some of the paper being blown down the hallway by the wind. He knew that there was an exit somewhere to the outside. Soon he reached a turn to the left where he saw daylight. The exit was in the middle of a town square. However, it was even quieter out there. Rigel walked up the steps to the square only to see a quiet existence.
