I didn't like Munch at first, but just after beating MO realizing that was because the game sucked IMO. I like Munch as a character, but not the game he's in and mostly his gameplay mechanics and the stupid hopping sound that everyone mentioned.
Munch isn't necessarily bad, it just that his character wasn't brought out enough in the game. Most of the game really focused on Abe.
From what I understand, most people couldn't relate to a one-legged aquatic creature. OWI cleverly made Stranger "bipedal" for the first half of the game to ensure that people would relate to him.
