Good points there, Manco. I guess teaming up could be an option, but I wouldn't force it - going alone may be an advantage sometime. In the video I saw of it, people received some random starting items and 32 torches. I think keeping the torch idea is reasonable, but do we want the other random stuff?

Having a standard amount of torches is a good idea, as from what I saw survival gets very dependent on navigating/mitigating dark areas. I also like the idea of laying torches being a “do I want to risk giving my position away?” kind of choice.
Other gear is probably a no-no – the Yogscast video makes it clear that giving people weapons randomly at the start gives those players a BIG advantage.
I think teams would work best as an on-the-fly deal – no official teams, but people are free to work together and betray one another to their heart’s content.
