I think SOPA and Protect IP are more or less the same thing. SOPA is the house version, but it's essentially the same bill. PIP is technically on hold, but the video I posted covers the same issues being reviewed with SOPA.

Also, on the matter of CBS supposedly knowingly providing Bittorrent software to bait it's users. Wouldn't that make CBS liable, not it's users? Or am I missing something here?

If that were true, Bram Cohen would be liable to pay fines for every single film downloaded via BitTorrent. There's nothing legally or ethically wrong with using BitTorrent software; it just depends what you use it for.

As for baiting their users; that's rubbish. CBS as a content provider were probably completely oblivious to what was being provided by C|NET. And even if they were aware that BitTorrent software was being hosted by their subsidiary, it's a very long bow to draw to imply that that means they were baiting consumers to take part in piracy.

I'm pretty sure that when I installed uTorrent it asked me to agree to something along the lines of "I am aware that this is a completely innocent piece of software in itself. I know that piracy is illegal and anything I do with this program is my responsibility, and the consequences therof my fault".

Any liability the providers of BitTorrent may have held was probably dismissed as soon as the program was intsalled.

Like any good politician in Washington they don't care about the law being good or bad, they just care about the money they're getting for pushing it. Those assholes would push a law trough that would allow you to throw babies against a wall if it meant a monthly paycheck of a few hundred grand.

Megaupload being shut down now is terrible timing... I'm actually a little worried about what'll happen next. Tensions are currently high over the widespread attention that SOPA just got, so people are already angry. This may be like throwing a match into a tinderbox. I just hope nobody does something incredibly stupid, which may make US congress or anyone else with power immediately pass more bills to break the internet.

On the other hand it may go the opposite direction and this may be beneficial to the cause of a free internet. We can only hope, though.

I'm not too thrilled with Anonymous's response. If they had waited for a more definitive word on the ultimate fate of SOPA, then okay. To make a move now seems premature and I think it will hurt more than help, as it encourages the kind of behavior that SOPA-supporters built their platform on in the first place. Congress members are going to think "Well now we have to pass it, to keep Anonymous frum stealin' our moviez and hackin' our interwebs!"

I assume that the government got a court order before shutting down MegaUpload, but it bothers me that it takes effect immediately, without giving them a chance to appeal.
