I was taught plenty about sex in school. But I know that certain area's (especially in America where certain schools actively choose not to give sex ed because of religious background) simply don't do it as good as it should.

The age of consent is 16 in Australia as well, and in my opinion it's too young. But in Mexico the age of consent is 12. Fucking 12. And in Oman it's 9, though you need to be married.

It sickens me that it would be legal for a grown man to have sex with a twelve-year-old girl - or in fact with a sixteen-year-old.

Ideally, I think once you turn fourteen you can have sex with anyone a year either side of your age. So at fourteen or fifteen, and at fifteen fourteen, fifteen or sixteen. Then once you turn twenty you can do it with anyone else that age or higher.

Back ontopic,

@Havoc: a fifteen-year-old can't make an educated decision about sex, but I agree that telling them not to will just make them want to more.

The UK, North America and Canada all seem to have perfectly functional Sex-Ed programs. The majority of the posters seem to agree that adults having sex with children is bad, the problem does not lie with the hormone charged minor, the age of consent is most often the most appropriate cut-off line to keep pedophiles at bay (with some exceptions, thanks Ench), and you're a mess of a human being who should be euthanized.

I don't think I'll ever have kids, but I do have ideas on how I would raise them if I did. And of those things would be that I'd start teaching them about sex the moment they enter puberty. And one of the things I'd teach is that you should only have sex with someone you're in a relationship with and when you're sure you're comfortable with it. I'd teach them that they should always use a condom, regardless of what the other wants and they should never do anything they don't want to do.

That's all you can do as a parent. Make sure they know those things from the top of their head so that if they do get a boyfriend/girlfriend and sneak him/her up to their room one day at least they will know what to do and what not to do. And of course I would jump in if my 14 year old daughter comes home with some 20 year old dude I've never seen. Put a light in his face and ask him what he's doing with my girl, how they met and what he's doing here. If I suspect he's some douchebag I kick him out and if I think he's a reasonable guy he can spend time with her but I wouldn't allow them to be alone in my house. Here's the problem though; if they really like each other, as a parent you will not be able to keep them from seeing each other or getting alone time. So for those situations I just want my kids to be informed and from there I trust that they will do what feels good for them.

You can distrust that 20 year old and kick his ass the second you see him but all that does is open a door for that guy to further intimidate your kid. If he really has ill intentions then he'll use that ass kicking to his advantage real quick. And since I'm the irrational parent in the eyes of my daughter, she'll choose his side at least long enough for him to completely wrap her in. By the time she realizes he's actually a douche bag it's probably already too late. So yeah, if there is no immediate cause for alarm aside from the age I prefer to keep an eye on the situation from a distance.

I've been through a situation myself where a father has done everthying in his power to stop me from seeing his daughter, up to and including warping her perception of me and calling in favours from his mobster brother.

At the time I thought he was the most demented horrible controlling piece of shit father in the world, but looking back I can see that just by existing I transgressed some serious lines. From someone who spent most of last year reeling from the ass end of a situation where a father takes immensely ott and controlling action I still think he was justified in what he did.
