I didn't know that. I hate when someone steals song.

???

They didn't steal the song. They did a cover of it. Which is kind of like paying homage to it. There is nothing wrong with doing a cover of a song. Unless, you're a cover band. Then you need to just commit suicide.

Maybe the question should be: what music do you really hate?

In that case....

MADONNA! Anyone who listens to Madonna is immediately suspect of being mentally challenged.

Laurie Berckner. I watch Noggin all day with my daughter and they play Laurie Berckner all goddamn day. She is awfull.

The vast mass of metal. Because most of it is unbelievably stupid. There are exceptions, of course.

Emo. Probably because I loved Sunny Day Real Estate back in the day and then all these awfull bands came along and ripped off their style and eventually turned it into the commercial garbage you hear today. Plus, being a whiny pussy just sucks.

That's all for now.

I'd say I can listen to almost all music and enjoy it. Some styles I appreciate and analyze absorb more, for instance Jazz and its specific branch offs with BeBop etc. and the genuis of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, etc. However, even if there's a style I'm not too fond of such as country, etc. I respect the artist and what they are trying to do or trying to get across with their lyrics.

However, I will say this summer I have been listening to a lot of 311 which surprisingly I was only introduced to this past year and the song on my mind right now is probably "Flowing."
That's exactly how I am when it comes to music. To be honest, I didn't start liking modern music until last summer. I kept buying CD after CD and soon I had ten hours worth of music on my comp. It was insane. Now I listen to things from soundtracks from musical theatre to Cirque du Soleil. Even I like to Mindless Self Indulgance's song Bitches every once and a while.

Exactly! And even if people hate it the whole reason I wanted an iPod as my main gift for my 18th birthday is the convienence of having all my music in one place and not having to worry about losing or having my CDs either damaged etc, I think of them as the hard source copies of most of my music minus some stuff that wasnt obtained via CDs but the organizational capabilities of the iPod are quite nifty too!

This may sound really strange, but I don't like pop sung by women. It just sounds fakey.

And, as I said before, rap makes my head hurt.

Oh yes, Used, we know all about your hatred of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Also, people, I live for Queen. If you ever saw my profile (especially the picture) you would know that.

I detest anyone that doesn't acknowledge that Modest Mouse is the greatest band of the last ten years. Every album is a masterpiece.

Detest away. Its just not my bag. I just got the new Sadus album. It ain't as good as the older albums but it is still pretty good. And DiGiorgio is great on the bass as usual.
I'm going to put out a word of support for Rictus Grin. Their demo is damn good and I hope they get picked up by a major label. Go Wisconsin Metal!

I'd suggest Faggot or 1989 or one of MSI's good songs.

Most metal does sound immature. Everyone needs a little tantrum now and then, mind you.

I need to dabble a bit further into Modest Mouse. Any particular standout albums I should go for?

THIS IS A LONG DRIVE FOR SOMEONE WITH NOTHING TO THINK ABOUT is one of the most beautifull albums ever recorded. It's their second album and the sound will probably be very far from what you are used to since it came out in 96. Listen to it 2 or 3 times and then all of a sudden it will hit you. THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING ALBUM I HAVE EVER HEARD!

Modest Mouse ain't shit compared to big metal acts. Do you think they'll be touring 13 years from now? Do you think they'll have an all time album that people talk about decades after its release? If you think so, you're wrong. Metal dominated the charts for nearly 20 years and has sold 100s of millions of albums, what the **** have bands like Modest Mouse done?

Dumbest thing I've ever read. What your saying is that popularity and mass acceptance is what makes a thing good. Again, dumbest thing I've ever read. Metal is for the most part a marriage of stupidity, misplaced anger, and a homosexual burlesque stage show (I have no problem with homosexuality so don't start screaming at me). And by the way Modest Mouse already has an all time album that people who actually understand music still talk about a decade later. Their first album came out 94. They have done more for music than any metal act besides Tool. They have made music more honest and more intelligent. All of the great indie bands that are around now will be more than happy to tell you that Modest Mouse changed the way they look at music and influenced them beyond anything else.

Modest Mouse and Tool have done more for music than any metal act? My ass. Call me when they kickstart a whole new genre of music like Black Sabbath or sell 90 million albums. You're trying to tell me something that is absurb, that two bands did more for music than entire heavy metal movements in Britain, California, the East Coast of America, Germany, Florida, Sweden, and on and on and on. Who's influenced more bands, Slayer or Tool? Led Zep or Tool? Iron Maiden or Tool? Death or Tool? Gimme a break. You're such an unbelievable fanboy.

The question isn't who has influenced more bands. You would win that one. The question is who has influenced more good bands. I win that hands down.

Edit: Zeppelin isn't a metal band. They may have influenced a lot of what became metal but they definitely were not. And Tool is metal. I was trying to throw you a bone and say that there is good metal out there. Except their new album. That was garbage.

One more edit: We are arguing two different things here. You constantly stick to the idea of being popular and selling records and having followers and touring 20 years after your last album came out. While I constantly talk about intelligence and honesty in music. Music that makes you understand your own flaws instead of screaming about the flaws of people you don't agree with. Maybe we should agree to disagree because we obviously have different ideas about what makes music good.

Olivia Tremor Control for fucking ever. Too bad they broke up. But Circulatory System (which is 3/4 of OTC) is pretty great, too. Their new album should be out in a couple months.

I say Led Zeppelin IS metal, or at least has a lot of metal elements. Based on the region they're from, lyrical content and delivery, and the style of lead guitar and drumming that was done that they're more metal than hard rock. But whatever. You told me that a band like Modest Mouse or Tool has done more for music that any metal band.
The only way you can judge what a band has "done for music" is what they have done IN music. How many bands they influenced, album sales, chart performance, longevity/fan loyalty, how many times they've toured and where and how, etc. You're not going to get me to say that The Backstreet Boys have done a better album than somebody like Onslaught or Exhorder. But were they more influential? Did the Backstreet Boys do more for music, like help bring the boy band back, than those 2 bands? Did they sell more records? Change what radio stations played? The answer is yes.
Based on merit I'd have to give the nod to the former but based on what they "did" for music The Backstreet Boys win.

I didn't know someone could be wrong so many times and in so many ways in one single post. What about raising the intelligence level of rock music? Is that less important than selling records> And Modest Mouse tours constantly so I'm not sure what you're going on about there. Selling records isn't doing something for music. In the case of the bands you are talking about I would consider it doing something TO music. Like dumbing it down.
