Whilst I'm worried this is going to turn in to a new religion discussion, how can you possibly hold that a religion is true if its holy book isn't?

Oh don't know, I can't profess to understand God's workings and his miracles and all that good stuff, and often I've asked myself the same question you just put forward, I suggested to myself that perhaps Genesis was written for people who couldn't contemplate the Universe on a scale we do today so instead the start of the Old Testament was written to summarise what was made, what sin was and God's wrath/ love.

Yeah, theyre not for everyone. I love em, but eh. And good for you, I love Tolkien...even if he tends to ramble on and on and on and...You catch my drift. I will never forgive him for that stretch in fellowship with Tom mother fucking bombadil. Ugh.

The Harry Potter books are fantastic kid's books, amazing young teen books and rather flawed older teen books. The demographic progresses with the series.

Depends if you think copious amounts of angst, plot contrivances out of nowhere and spending half of the last book running around england arguing are standards for older-teen fiction.

I'm reading Ravener: The Omnibus. It's three Warhammer 40K novels about some badass from The Inquisition wrapped into a HUGE softcover. I'm also reading Fool by Christopher Moore again. Love that book.

Be sure to tell me if Wolves of the Callah, Song of Suzzanah and The Dark Tower are just as disappointing the second time round.

I really didn't like the HP books from number 5 and onwards... I never read the last one.
I don't remember if it was the 5th or 6th... But Harry just turned so... angsty all of a sudden. Like it wasn't progressive at all, and it just kind of turned me off of the story.

It pissed me off that Sirius's death could have been averted at least ten times over had Harry not acted like a stupid little wanker the whole way through the book.

But but the second, third and fourth books were actually good.

And the fifth and sixth ones weren't that bad.

No comment on the seventh. I hate that book.

Who didn't go through that at puberty?

Apart from me. I started and am still going through all the teenage emotional bullshit several years after puberty. That's not right at all.

I just piked up Terry Pratchett's Snuff. Well, it is excellent so far. But when excellence is the norm, is disappointment the only other possibility and surprise? Hmm.

So... his writing style hasn't been negatively affected by the scribe?

This was my main concern, though it's pretty much a guarenteed buy anyway.

Yes.

Start at Moving Pictures. It gets much much better as you go along.

The first few books are rather fair-to-good (Though I'm sure BM will disagree). Basically there's about four or five plot threads going on in Discworld and in the first few books it's...

Colour of Magic (Rincewind is introduced)
The Light Fantastic (Rincewind book)
Equal Rites (Granny Weatherwax is introduced)
Mort (Death is properly introduced)
Sorcery (Rincewind book)
Wyrd Sisters (Granny Weatherwax/Witches book)
Pyraminds (Standalone)
Guards Guards!! (Sam Vimes and The Watch are introduced)
Eric (Rincewind book, arguably the worst book in the series)
Moving Pictures (Archchancellor Ridcully is introduced. The series suddenly goes from good to excellent)

Basically, you will have to read the first few books anyway to get a good handle on character introductions, but I read the first twenty five or so books achromatically anyway and I didn't mind.
