It basically tries to cram all the major plot points that the show should have explored in future seasons into a single movie. It’s a really unsatisfactory way of trying to “wrap up” the show.

I watched it today, and this is totally right. It really does cram shit together. The first scene where it introduces the crew is so forced, just to get everyone up to speed, but it goes so fast it skims over important things. Why is Jayne totally fine with River going on the mission with them, only to revert to his usual "she's a spaz we need to kill her or leave her behind" shtick later.
It had moments that were good. But the entire premise of the guy hunting River because of what she
might have mind-read from Parliament officials was kind of lame. I mean fuck I hated the whole beginning. That sequence of Simon rescuing her really made no sense. We were shown in the series that he wasn't very good in that kind of situation. I just always assumed he payed out the nose to have her delivered to him frozen as we first meet her in Firefly. But nope, they needed an establishing shot of them together.

If you have Netflix I’ve found Orange is the New Black to be very entertaining.

I watched the first 8 episodes of OitNB and I just couldn't get into it. The episodes didn't really feel like episodes, they were just a series of scenes. Everyone tells me that the secondary characters make it, but they were developed in such an obtuse way I couldn't get behind it. Don't show me a character's backstory in an episode if they have nothing to do with the plot of the episode. Don't throw unnecessary exposition at me unless it's relevant to what's going on. Don't have a needlessly long dancing scene in an episode that already feels like it's hardly going anywhere. I'd guess most of these problems come from being a book adaption, but I don't know enough about the book to comment.
The episode with the chicken was fucking great, though. It basically addressed all of my criticisms, but then by the next episode I was bored for the same reasons again.
I actually feel really awkward about not liking it because all of my friends adore it so much. I think they just like it for the emotional drama they throw in rather than the actual quality, though. I mean it's obviously a well made show with good actors. I just found it really boring.
