Goodbye Steve Irwin

I've never liked Steve Irwin much, but I couldn't help but feel down with his death (Can't say that him dying wasn't expected, though). He was a good person.

I think people should be respectful of his death. Saying "Good riddance" is insulting to people that knew and loved him.

EDIT: I just did some news googling, and apparently he was just snorkeling? He wasn't even attempting to touch the animal from what I understand.. He just swam over/near it. That's.. terrifying. It's really got me to thinking... God knows how many times I'm going to be snorkeling/diving in my life. That or any other horrible sudden oceany death could happen to me like it did to Steve. =/

As I understand it, he was doing a children's show about the barrier reef when he accidentally and without provocation came across this sea critter.

I read about stingrays to see what actually did the guy in. The type of stingray that got him, the Bull ray, frequently gets 10+ feet in length and well over 500 pounds, with the largest ever recording being 14 feet on the dot and nearly 800 pounds.
The things are armed with the animal kingdom equivalent of a good rusty dagger that can be whipped by its tail a full 10 inches through a human's chest. And people are joking about this being a pussy animal, or a shameful way to go. I'd bet good money that the mother****er that took out Irwin could take any 2 board members in hand to hand combat.

How about the shitheads who are being so disrespectful just keep their mouths shut? How you could even have a problem with the guy? He saved so many animals, both directly and through the money and awareness he raised. He was a legend and will be greatly missed.

The cops came out today and said that they had viewed the tapes and there was no indication that he had harassed the animal.

Amazingly, this is not even as unlikely as the last person to be killed by a ray in Australia. It was a kid in a boat (!) who was stung when a ray "leapt out of the water" (according to The Age newspaper). He went to hospital, where his wounds were cleaned out, was released but died of the venom a week later.

No seriously, the guy had balls - He didn't just take it and die, he actaully pulled it out of his chest. . . Then lost conciousness for the last time. Jeeze. But I suppose that might of been just his reaction.

Apparently there's some kind of debate or something (on YTMND) about if he'd of survived long enough to get to a hospital if he didn't pull it out, since Manta Ray poison doesn't kill off tissues, just causes a lot of pain, but I somehow doubt that he'd of survived anyway. . . :S

It wasn't a manta ray. It was a bull ray according to Statikk (a trustworthy source of info ). Read what Statikk has to say about that type of sting ray in his post.^

In the case of stings to the heart, it is the site of injury and the nature of the wound that prove to be fatal, not merely the venom of the stingray.

So in that case, in effect, it's the equivilent of getting stabbed through the heart with any sharp object. Does make me wonder if he would've survived if he didn't pull it out. Hmm.

I could never watch Steve Irwin. It doesn’t befit naturalists to wrestle the animals they’re watching. Give me David Attenborough any day. Neverless, following the news I performed some limited research and learned of his rôle as a conservationist, and can’t help but admire what he did.

But if something is stuck "through the heart" I think the person is bound to die no matter what, especially if it struck him as Stattik claimed to be possible, like 4 inches into the chest.

Hmm, I tend to take this point of view most of the time too. I'm really upset when people kill a wild animal that kills a person whose community (or just himself) is too close to that animals' habitat. Grr Arg. You don't want to be maimed by a bear? Don't live in a house in bear-populated mountain areas. (I've heard several stories throughout my life like that back in my home state.)

Which is much the same philosophy as Irwin had. He was militantly against people who shoot crocodiles simply because they're a nuisance so he relocated them instead. He used much of his wealth to buy huge tracts of land to remain undeveloped as wildlife preserves.

Indeed, and that’s precisely the admirable conservation work I was referencing. I suppose given the inability to straighten up the attitudes of near-sighted humans, relocation of the innocent was the best option.

Living in dangerous places is by no means limited to areas shared with dangerous animals. The Norfolk landscape is unfortunate enough to be inhabited by people who think they have the right to live at the coast, on a floodplain, or in fens, and then complain about coastal erosion, flooding or malaria. And so they plonk down concrete monstrosities and drain the marshes.

And then complain about dispaced coastal erosion and water shortages.

I was really shocked when I read the newpaper: "Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter (I thought it's about another action of him or something like this. Then I just read: ) is dead!"
