Well I just took some good pics of Steefs for example and I always look at these very accurate during I draw. I have to know how the horns go in circles and so forth. Then I first outline some circles near the Steef head, where the horns have to be. After that I... you know... just complete the adumbration with some details like the uneveness ( lines and archs). At last I have the shadows to draw. Shadows are very important. They're show you the uneveness of the horns. And the form ( highs, deeps ) of the whole body of your Steef. But for that you must know at the beginning where the light is from.
