Question: I read in the unofficial FAQ of the Oddworldlibrary, that Abe is blue perhaps because he drank a Pramite juice. This is one of many suppositions. So, in oddworld.com there is an image of Abe who is drinking something with a straw. Is that the juice?
http://www.oddworld.com/firsttenyear.../abe_face.html
I think it is really SoulStorm Brew. SoulStorm seemed to be a concept in AO before final revisions of the story was made.

Isn't Abe blue because he's the chosen one?

I think you have gotten it flopped. Abe is the chosen one because he is blue, not the other way around. The prophecy says that the savior will be the one that has blue skin, however it may be that he or she got that way. So it leaves us with still no clue on how Abe got blue.

Some say he is just a very gloomy person, other say the Paramite thing. I actually believe you grow increasingly blue as you become more magically gifted. For example, Big Face is quite blue (in MO concepts, I think he actually a little more green), referring to his powers. Some of the other native are a little more blue than usual, (they have the amazing ability to recollect themselves into birds and turn back into birds at will) but not as blue as Abe.

I just figured that blue was a natural, if rare, mudokon colouration. Natural variation and all that.

I don't think is that, because SoulStorm Brew is green, and when a Mudokon drinks it, he becomes dark green. Paramites are dark and so it's possible Abe didn't drink SoulStorm Brew. And if in AO it was only a conception, I don't think in the unofficial FAQ is considered it.

I don't think. Many Mudokons have shdes of blue, but Abe is all blue!!! I think he was a normal Mudokon and after a mutation (maybe our supposition) he was chosen for free the others.

The blue of those Mudokons is just to show their emotion.

The real reason for Abe being blue is so you can tell him apart on a screen full of other Mudokons. The in game reason isn't fully clear, but it's definitely a natural colour. Perhaps a different race of Mudokon slightly (like black/white people), and in the OWI Art book, it mentions his blues and purples are earthy colours, signifying the Mudokons' bonds with nature.

I doubt i was from some 'Paramite juice' which I've never heard of before...

Perhaps emailing OWI...?

Perhaps because we can see only their back. I also noticed this fact. But I didn't care it. Abe also was very blue when he was in the tear-x-tractor in the bad ending of AE. I think that is an effect of the traction and of the electrocuted.

I wasn't really proposing the idea that SoulStorm made Abe blue....

According to my theory, Abe would be blue because he was born more magically gifted than others. I don't think mutations would make him the savior. There were others that were blue (or at least a little), but they weren't the chosen one.

Maybe the blue Muds seen at Monsaic Lines are actually wearing blue body paints to show their belief in the prophecies of a blue‐skinned saviour, and Abe is the only Mudokon with a permanent purplish complexion.

I’m not a huge fan of Abe having more powerful psychic powers than other Mudokons. The real strength of Abe’s character, I find, is that he has the convictions to overcome his natural fear and laziness to accomplish great acts of activism. Fictional characters with unrivalled abilities are hard to take inspiration from, because people tend not to have super powers.

There's no denying that Abe has access to powers other characters do not. Though it is reasonable to suggest that all mudokons are capable of performing them themselves. How would you explain Abe's natural affinity for using them in the games?

Gameplay would be more dull without them. I’m not denying Abe uses his mental powers at least much more than regular Mudokons, just saying that it compromises the message and appeal of his character to my mind. Then again, Abe may be the only Mud we’ve seen who can possess other characters, but we’ve never seen him teleport himself without a bird portal, regrow a tree from a stump, or initiate a storm, all of which we’ve seen performed by other Mudokons. Even his ability to transform into the Shrykull comes from his hand scars, which he earned by being nimble, solving puzzles, and understanding the behaviour of the sacred creatures, and is only an option for him at sporadic points.

I've understood bird portals as being the in-game implementation of teleportation. But then there's the portal scene from MO, which directly conflicts with past portal FMVs, where the birds are clearly seen. Such as the endings of AE.

Birds aren’t seen at the disembarkation point of any Abe portals, nor do Native Mudokons in Monsaic Lines appear with birds, although they disappear with them. The Shaman can materialize and de‐ without any birds at all. Probably the film will have its own rules and visualization concerning teleportation. But if Abe can teleport himself and other Mudokons at will, why need he have trekked across the Necrum Desert?

Here’s a question: Why could Abe and Munch not simply have teleported to Vykkers Labs as the two Mudokons in the Portal FMV do? The dialogue makes it clear that they first went and got themselves cleaned up, native dress, and hip new hair styles.

I would suggest that portals need anchors at both ends to form a link, a role in which spiritually/psychically active mudokons fill nicely. Abe, due to his development in such skills, is one anchor, some other force or individual is the other. This would explain the behaviour of the majority of portals.

As for the others, such as those Abe can use, perhaps there are historical portal openings scattered across Oddworld which, for whatever reason, have been retained from the days of mudokon glory. Rare and scattered, they would explain those that grant access to secret areas (perhaps past mudokons crafted them in order to fulfil the prophecy?) and important ones such as those in Monsaic, Necrum, and the temples.

Perhaps it needed a large group of spiritual muds to send those two to the labs? In that case, Abe and Munch could have been sent there by that method as well but they wouldn't have had any way to get home.

Extra thought: They needed the airship to carry the labour eggs home. They're probably too fragile to throw through a portal.

I fail to see the connection. They could have zipped from place to place, donating to the Lululululu Fund and then teleported to the labs. Aside, of course, for the previously related reasons.

That would mean that a lot of Mudokons should be blue now. Sam is in depression and is on the verge of suicide.

I like to think Abe has something over the other Mudokons in spiritual powers. I see it that all Mudokons are capable of great spiritual powers, but only ones who are naturally gifted, or who meditate and practice, like the ones are doing in Monsaic Lines. Other Mudokons in slavery at least would not have had the initiative or strength to possess Sligs, meditate or chant for other reasons. I also see it as the way Abe is then suddenly able to possess Paramites and Scrabs. Being physically stronger, they'd be harder to possess initially, but with enough practice, he is able to.

You'd think also, that if all Mudokons were that powerful, how the Glukkons actually rose above them and 'defeated' them or whatever so long ago in the pas, if every Mudokon was capable of that.

*goes slightly off-topic* May I ask what the Mudanchee, Mudomo and Abe's chest tattoos are doing in the Abe's Oddysee concept art section of TOGG?

I'm just awesome at finding stuff wrong with that website, aren't I.

I think they are in the Abe's Oddysee's section near the Abe's images. So it's possible they were metioned there near other rock arts, like Scrabs, Paramites, Elum, Paramonia, Scrabania and rock arts.

I don't think they had to be in AO. The history of the Abe's chapter that holds AO and AE follows a chronological order: the power of ancient spirits has been given to Abe when he freed them in AE. And power of Shrykull has been given to Abe when he past Scrabania and Paramonia in AO.

You never know. Soulstorm Brew was supposed to be in AO. Anything can happen.
