I'm playing Kindgom Hearts 2: Final Mix, which was never released outside of Japan. It's a bit odd considering I don't know any Japanese, but I've played KH2 enough times that I remember what items do and where to go. I don't understand the Gummi Ship missions at all, but they were fairly confusing in English.
It's essentially the same as the English version, but there's a new super-hard difficulty setting, new abilities, new enemies, recoloured old enemies, new areas, new items, Mushrooms XIII, new cutscenes, new synthesis recipes and a puzzle minigame which involves collecting puzzle pieces throughout the worlds.
The new difficulty is really, really hard. Enemies do x2 damage and you gain experience at x0.75 the usual rate, but you start with a few neat abilities, including one called EXP-Zero that I'm not brave enough to equip. You also gain HP in half of the usual intervals meaning that you only end up with 60 instead of 120 at the end of the game. Any enemy is easy to take down on their own, but once they get into groups of 3 or more even the weakest enemies become a challenge. I was mobbed rather brutally by 6 Soldiers in Beast's Castle. Large Body's half you health in a single hit. Tougher bosses seem to knock you down to 1 HP in one combo if not a single hit.
I really like the puzzle pieces because they give you a reason to explore, jump around and learn drive-form abilities. There was no intensive beyond OCD to do any of these things in KH2.
