They're not disgusting. Nothing is disgusting (except for special meat). They don't require fur underground, so why waste valuable resources growing any! For our enjoyment? They are the perfect mammalian pet for people with fur allergies.

Besides, all rodents look like that when you shave them.

Not that I've, um... shaved... rodents... ever...
