Rock legend Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, has died aged 70 in California.

Van Vliet had suffered from the degenerative condition mutliple sclerosis for a number of years. Complications relating to the illness caused his death, according to an announcement made by the Michael Werner Gallery, which represented Van Vliet's visual art.

Van Vliet came to prominence during the 1960s as leader of the groundbreaking experimental rock group, the Magic Band.
