there is the "I'm so angry" percentage of it (i'd say about 70%), but then there's the portion of "We don't take anything seriously" which'd be about 10%, and a further "We take ourselves very seriously and write soulful music" 20% group (19% wank).

Symphonic and progressive metal is what I can tolerate, because the emphasis on the singing is equal to the music, rather than just mindless screaming and growling.

:
I'm concerned mostly with the culture of "I'm so angry" rock.
Same. It's mostly 15 year old idiots who's minds have been taken in by 'hating everything', and frankly, it's pretty fucking pathetic.

Also, overlistened songs are annoying. Sure, when you were a few years younger the song was okay and tolerable, but now you have so many wankers listening to a particular song that's just...you know, get with the fucking times.

Symphonic metal is ghey, I prefer mindless screaming (and only sometimes growling). The singing is most definitely not playing an equal part to the music, it is the lead instrument, you just think it's playing more of a part because it's all BAWWWWWW TUGGIN YO HEARTSTRINGS. it would be an integral part of the music if you couldn't tell it was a vocal part.

so I gave Prurient a go.. the noise is nice, the vocals however, are absolutely shocking.

these dudes get my favourite band of the month, holy fffffffuuuuuuuuuu

The only metal I like is Melodic Death Metal, and that's only because of Metalocalypse. It has gotten me into other bands, but I'm still wary of the genre.

Black Metal annoys me and idiot fucks like Varg and that guy he stabbed make it even worse for me.

The opening for Into the Water is probably one of my favorite parts of any bit of music.

I just LOVE it. Could anyone recommend me something similar that doesn't have growling?

Black metal is some of the only kind of metal I like. I like that hypnotic ambient stuff of Burzum, which sometimes I guess isn't really metal. Varg's music is actually pretty creative, it's just that he was a douche bag, but I don't judge musicians on whether they were good people or not.

Into The Water's intro is the best thing ever. The growling also doesn't bother me, because Brendon Small's growl is kind of "clean" sounding.

I like Folk Metal because it shafts Thatcher and violins give me a hard on.

An example is in order.

This is shallow pointless angst:
:
Lies you spit are harmless to me!
Your spite! Your greed! Your envy!
Why do you stoop so low?
Am I the last to know?

WHERE'S YOUR BIG MOUTH NOW!?
HOPE YOU'RE FUCKING PROUD!
Do you like your bruises!?
NOW YOU MAKE NO SOUND!

WAS YOUR LESSON LEARNED!?
NOW THE TABLES TURN!
What were your intentions?!
To hell with you! Now BURN!
Taken from the first BFMV song I clicked on from Darklyrics.

This is poetic righteous indignation:
:
Youth of our nation - A lost generation
Like lepers we march to the chimes of Big Ben.
Exiled and rejected by powers elected
Our cries from the gutter don't reach number ten.
Give us this day our daily bread
Before the headlines read "bring out your dead."
Chip-wrapper flowers are blown onto this cardboard grave
My spray paint epitaph upon the wall it says...
"Here lies the bones of some poor homeless vagrant
He died as he lived, in the shit on the pavement."
The latter is the type of metal I listen to, it is meaningful and thought provoking, the former is a bunch of kids with long hair playing with powerchords.

Is that a lyric from one of you Manson songs? Cute.

I found an old LP of mine that is full of recordings of Scott Joplin playing his own pieces. It's brilliant stuff. I almost forgot how excellent ragtime is.

I swear I had better taste when I was 13. No offense to you Josh, I could care less about what you listen to, especially at your age. Just give it a year then you can start listening to other stuff and you'll hate everything you used to like.

I think I first saw The Wall around that age. Yeah, I did.

I spent my days as 13-14 year old being a loser and listening to classical music, including a shit load of ragtime.

I've been getting into Blur slowly as of late.

Yeah, I like his stuff to an extent. I certainly wouldn't say he's the only contemporary rock star. He's probably gained that reputation for stretching out into other, more popular musical spectra such as film score and collaboration with modern musical artists. If you like his stuff or minimalism in general, you should definitely take a look at John Adams who I've been told is the most frequently performed modern composer right now. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra actually devoted the greater part of their season to his music last year, and I missed it because of PMEA festivals. ><

There can't be a piece of music that's both written by him and isn't long and repetitive. It's his shtick and no force in the universe can change that.
